Chapter 24: The Hidden Tribe

For several moments, no one moved. The young hunter had already disappeared among the trees, leaving only the faint sound of footsteps fading into the distance.

Jarek tightened his grip on his spear. "You trust him?"

Aren looked toward the forest where the stranger had vanished. "No. But I trust his actions."

Jarek frowned. "They’ve been watching us since yesterday. If they wanted to attack, they could have done it while we were sleeping."

Doran nodded slowly. "They had the advantage. They never used it."

Silence settled over the group. Finally, Aren adjusted the leather strap on his shoulder. "We’ll follow. But stay alert."

The others nodded.

---

The narrow trail twisted through the forest. Unlike the ancient stone road, this path was almost invisible only someone who knew the land well could have found it. Several times Aren noticed freshly cut branches carefully placed back into position to hide the route.

"This trail was made on purpose," he said quietly.

Doran examined the ground. "And maintained. No weeds, no fallen branches. Someone walks here often."

---

Nearly an hour later, the forest began to change. The massive trees grew farther apart, sunlight reached the ground again, and small streams flowed between clusters of wildflowers. Birdsong finally returned.

Lira smiled. "It feels... peaceful."

Aren nodded. "The forest isn’t silent anymore." Whatever territory they had entered, it felt protected.

---

Without warning, the young hunter appeared again, stepping out from behind a large oak tree as though he had always been standing there.

"You kept up."

Jarek nearly jumped. "Do you always move without making a sound?"

The young hunter smiled slightly. "Our children learn before they can hunt."

Jarek scratched his head. "I need lessons."

For the first time, the stranger laughed — quiet, brief — then his calm expression returned. "My name is Kael. I am one of the Forest Watchers."

Aren introduced himself. "I’m Aren." He pointed toward the others. "Doran. Jarek. Lira."

Kael nodded respectfully. "My Elder already knows your names."

The four travelers exchanged surprised looks. "You’ve been observing us for longer than we thought," Doran said.

Kael neither confirmed nor denied it. He simply turned and continued walking.

---

As they climbed a gentle slope, Aren suddenly stopped, his eyes widening. Hidden beyond a curtain of trees, wooden houses stood among the branches — not on the ground, but above it. Platforms connected by rope bridges stretched from tree to tree. Children ran across them with practiced ease. Hunters carrying bows silently crossed overhead. Small gardens filled with herbs and vegetables rested on wooden terraces, and water flowed through hollowed logs from one platform to another.

No one had noticed the settlement until they were almost standing beneath it.

Lira covered her mouth in amazement. "It’s beautiful."

Doran looked upward. "They built an entire village without cutting down the forest."

Aren smiled quietly. "They adapted to the land." Instead of changing nature, they had learned to live with it.

The Civilization Legacy System quietly appeared.

Aren noticed something interesting. The System no longer called them simply a tribe. It classified them as a civilization.

---

Several villagers watched quietly from above. No one aimed a weapon, no one shouted — they simply observed. Children peeked curiously from behind wooden railings. An elderly woman smiled warmly before disappearing into one of the houses. Unlike Aren’s village, there was no fear. Only caution.

---

Kael stopped before the largest platform. Two tall guards carrying long wooden bows stood at the entrance. Without a word, they stepped aside.

"The Elder is waiting."

Aren climbed the wooden stairs first, each step echoing softly beneath his feet. At the top stood a large hall built around the trunk of an ancient tree, sunlight filtering through the leaves above, filling the room with a warm green glow.

At the center, an old man sat quietly beside a low wooden table. His hair was completely white, yet his back remained perfectly straight. His sharp eyes studied Aren from head to toe. Neither spoke. The silence lasted several long seconds.

Finally, the old man smiled.

"So. The Civilization Legacy System has finally chosen another successor."

Aren’s heart skipped a beat. He had never told anyone about the System.
