Chapter 23: The Trial of the Forest

Morning came slowly to the Whispering Forest. A pale mist drifted between the towering trees, hiding the distant mountains from sight. The small camp was already awake — no one had slept well. The strange symbol carved into the leather strip remained fresh in everyone’s mind.

Aren examined it once more. A large circle, surrounded by eight smaller stars. The carving was simple, yet it felt ancient. Almost sacred.

"What do you think it means?" Lira asked softly.

Aren shook his head. "I don’t know. But whoever left it wanted us to find it."

Doran finished packing the remaining food before standing. "Whether it’s a warning or an invitation, we’ll only find the answer by moving forward."

The group silently agreed.

---

The valley gradually narrowed as they continued north. Steep cliffs rose on both sides, blocking much of the morning sunlight. The silence became almost unnatural — even the insects seemed unwilling to make a sound.

Jarek frowned, his grip tightening around his spear. "I don’t like this. It feels like we’re walking into someone’s home."

Doran nodded. "Because we probably are."

No one replied. Every step became slower. More careful.

---

Nearly an hour later, the path opened into another clearing. Unlike the previous ones, this place was strangely clean — the grass had been cut, and several tree stumps showed fresh axe marks. Someone had worked here recently.

Lira crouched beside one of the stumps. "This wasn’t done with stone." She pointed at the smooth surface. "The cuts are too clean."

Jarek blinked. "You mean they have better tools?"

Before anyone could answer, the Civilization Legacy System quietly appeared.

Aren’s expression turned serious. If another tribe possessed better tools, they were far more advanced than he’d expected.

---

The group carefully searched the clearing. Near the center stood a single wooden post — nothing carved into it, nothing tied to it, only another circle surrounded by eight stars burned into the wood.

Doran walked around it slowly. "No footprints. No traps. It’s simply standing here."

Aren approached the post. The moment his fingers touched the symbol, nothing happened. No memory, no vision. Only silence.

Then a soft whistle echoed through the trees. Once. Twice. Three times.

Jarek spun around. "Who’s there?"

No answer came. Instead several birds flew into the sky, leaves rustling high above, yet the forest floor remained empty.

"They’re watching again," Doran whispered.

---

A moment later, a small object dropped from the branches, landing directly in front of Aren. This time it wasn’t a warning — it was a woven pouch, filled with several bright red berries.

Lira examined one carefully. "They’re safe. In fact—" she looked surprised, "—they’re more nutritious than anything I’ve seen."

Jarek scratched his head. "They’re giving us food?"

Aren looked toward the trees. "No. They’re testing us." He left the berries where they were. "We don’t touch what isn’t ours."

For several seconds, nothing happened. Then the leaves above rustled once more, and somewhere in the trees someone quietly laughed — not mockingly. Almost as if they approved.

---

Hours passed before the valley finally ended and the forest opened again. In the distance, thin streams of smoke rose above the trees. One. Two. Three. More followed.

Doran narrowed his eyes. "That’s no hunting camp."

"It’s a settlement," Aren said.

Before anyone could continue, a young figure stepped out from behind a tree. He looked no older than sixteen, wearing dark leather clothing woven with green leaves, a short bow resting in his hand. He didn’t raise it. Instead he looked calmly at Aren, then at the others.

For several heartbeats, neither side moved. Finally the young stranger spoke.

"You passed."

Jarek frowned. "Passed what?"

The boy ignored him, his eyes fixed on Aren. "Our Elder wishes to meet you."

Silence filled the forest. Doran stepped beside Aren. "It could be a trap."

Aren looked at the young scout. "If they wanted us dead, they’ve had countless chances since yesterday."

The stranger gave the slightest smile. "You are wiser than most outsiders." He turned and began walking toward the deeper forest. After several steps he stopped. "If you wish to meet our Elder, follow." Without another word, he disappeared between the trees.

The four travelers exchanged uncertain glances. For the first time since leaving the village, they had made contact with another civilization. And somewhere ahead, answers long buried beneath the forgotten history of the world were beginning to stir.
