Chapter 22: Silent Observers
The night passed without incident. No wolves appeared, no strange sounds echoed through the Whispering Forest. Yet none of the four travelers truly slept. Each of them had felt it — someone had been watching their camp.
---
Morning arrived beneath a blanket of mist. The fire had already burned out when Aren opened his eyes. Doran stood near the edge of the clearing, studying the forest.
"You sensed it too?" Aren asked.
Without turning around, Doran nodded. "We weren’t alone last night."
Jarek walked over, stretching his arms. "I checked the area before sunrise. Nothing. No footprints, no broken branches." He frowned. "It’s like whoever watched us never touched the ground."
Lira quietly packed her herbs into a leather pouch. "Maybe they simply didn’t want to be found."
No one laughed. After everything they’d seen, it was a real possibility.
---
The group continued north after a simple breakfast. The forest grew denser by the hour, towering trees blocking most of the sunlight. Even the air felt colder.
Doran suddenly stopped and crouched beside the ground. "The footprints—"
Everyone gathered around. The same seven sets of tracks continued north, but this time there were new marks — long scratches carved across the earth.
Jarek frowned. "Animal?"
Doran shook his head. "Too straight." He brushed away the leaves covering one of the marks. Not a claw mark — it looked as though something heavy had been dragged across the ground.
"A sled?" Lira guessed.
"Or supplies," Aren said quietly. "If they’re traveling this far, they’re carrying something important."
---
The Civilization Legacy System appeared.

Aren noticed something strange — the System hadn’t given him any rewards. Instead it was collecting information, almost as if it wanted him to investigate rather than fight.
---
Around noon, the group reached a narrow valley. Steep cliffs rose on both sides, with only a single path leading forward.
Doran’s expression darkened. "I don’t like this place. Too easy for an ambush."
"We cross quickly," Aren said.
The four travelers picked up their pace. Halfway through the valley, a faint whistle drifted through the air. Everyone froze. It lasted only a second, then silence.
Jarek raised his spear. "What was that?"
Before anyone answered, another whistle echoed — this one from the opposite cliff.
Doran looked upward. "We’re surrounded."
Lira instinctively stepped behind Aren. His eyes scanned the rocky cliffs. Nothing. No movement, no faces, only endless stone.
Then a small object landed several meters in front of them. Not a weapon — a carved wooden arrow, a strip of animal leather tied to it.
Aren picked it up carefully. No words, only a simple symbol burned into the leather: a circle surrounded by eight smaller stars. The same symbol they’d seen before.
The Civilization Legacy System reacted.

Aren lowered the leather strip slowly. Someone wasn’t trying to kill them. Someone was sending a message.
High above the valley, hidden among the rocks, several silent figures watched without a sound. One lowered his bow.
"They found the mark."
Another nodded. "Good. Now let’s see whether the chosen one is worthy."
