Chapter 21: The Silent Watchers
The forest remained unnaturally quiet. Not even birdsong broke the silence — only the slow rustling of leaves echoed through the towering trees as Aren’s group cautiously continued forward.
Doran led the way, stopping every few steps to examine the ground. The fresh footprints were still there.
"They’re moving at a steady pace," he whispered. "Not running."
Jarek frowned. "Then they don’t know we’re behind them."
"Or," Doran said quietly, "they already know."
The words sent a chill through the group.
---
Aren raised his hand. "Slow down."
Everyone obeyed immediately, moving carefully now, making as little noise as possible. Lira stayed near the center of the group. She wasn’t a fighter, but she understood one thing — if a battle started, she would become everyone’s lifeline. Her fingers instinctively touched the small pouch of healing herbs at her waist. She silently prayed she wouldn’t need to use them.
---
Nearly an hour passed. Then the footprints disappeared.
Jarek looked around, confused. "Where did they go?"
Doran crouched, pointing toward several broken branches. "They didn’t disappear. They left the trail." Dense bushes covered the area — someone had intentionally hidden their tracks. "They know how to avoid being followed." His expression grew serious. "This isn’t an ordinary hunting party."
The Civilization System quietly appeared.

Aren frowned. Exploration Experience — that was new. The system had never rewarded exploration before. Maybe leaving the village had unlocked another part of it.
---
The group pressed deeper into the Whispering Forest. The trees grew older and thicker, some trunks so massive that six people couldn’t circle them. Ancient vines hung from the branches like giant ropes, and strange blue flowers bloomed beneath the roots.
Lira’s eyes widened. "I’ve never seen so many unknown herbs." She carefully picked several leaves and wrapped them in cloth. "If Master saw this place, she’d never want to leave."
Aren smiled. "Then we’ll bring part of the forest back to her."
Lira nodded happily.
---
As the afternoon wore on, the forest began to change. The ground grew uneven, and large stone slabs emerged from the earth — some cracked, others thick with green moss.
Jarek stopped walking. "These aren’t natural."
Doran knelt beside one of the stones and brushed away the moss. Straight lines. Perfect corners. Someone had carved them, long ago.
---
Aren placed his hand on the ancient stone. The moment his fingers touched it, a sharp pain exploded inside his head. Broken images flashed before his eyes — towering walls, wide stone roads, thousands of people walking through a magnificent city, soldiers carrying banners that fluttered in the wind, a golden dragon engraved on a massive gate. Then darkness. The city crumbled. Fire consumed the streets. The sky turned red.
The vision vanished. Aren staggered backward, and Lira rushed to support him.
"Aren!"
"I’m fine." He took a deep breath.
The Civilization System appeared.

Aren stared silently at the screen. Ancient civilization. Could this place have once belonged to the people whose memories he carried?
---
Doran suddenly raised his fist. Everyone froze. He pointed toward the trees ahead — slight movement.
Jarek lifted his spear. "I saw it."
A shadow disappeared behind one of the giant trees. Then another. Someone was watching them, but whoever it was never stepped into the open — only silent eyes in the darkness.
Minutes passed. Nothing happened. Finally the presence faded.
Lira released the breath she’d been holding. "They’re gone?"
Doran shook his head. "No. They’re simply letting us continue."
---
As the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, the group found a small clearing beside an ancient stream.
"We’ll camp here tonight," Aren said.
Doran inspected the surroundings. "No fresh predator tracks. This place is safe enough."
Jarek gathered firewood while Lira prepared a simple meal from smoked meat and edible herbs. The small fire soon lit the dark forest — but beyond its light, the endless trees stayed silent. Watching.
High above them, hidden among the thick branches, a pair of golden eyes quietly observed the camp.
A low voice echoed through the darkness.
"So. The outsiders have finally arrived."
The figure vanished before anyone below noticed. The first night in the Whispering Forest had only just begun.
