The First Civilization

Chapter 20: Beyond the Valley

The first rays of sunlight slowly rose above the eastern mountains. A thin layer of mist covered the valley, making the village appear calm and peaceful. Today, everything felt different. For the first time in generations, representatives of the village would leave the valley and step into the unknown.

Long before sunrise, the villagers had already gathered at the wooden gate. Some carried baskets filled with smoked meat. Others brought leather water skins, spare stone spears, thick animal-hide blankets. Every gift carried the same silent wish — return home safely.

Aren checked their supplies one final time. Doran secured the bundles onto his back. Jarek spun his hunting knife before sliding it back into its sheath, trying to hide his excitement. Lira carefully arranged small leather pouches filled with dried herbs and medicine. Although she tried to remain calm, her hands trembled slightly.

---

"You look nervous."

Aren stopped beside her.

Lira forced a small smile. "I’ve never left the village before." She looked toward the endless forest beyond the gate. "Master always told me stories about the outside world. But hearing stories is different from seeing it yourself."

Aren looked toward the distant mountains. "I understand. This is my first journey too."

Neither of them truly knew what waited beyond the valley.

---

Footsteps echoed behind them. Chief Rokan slowly approached — unlike yesterday, he carried no travel pack, only the old spear that had protected the village for decades. He stopped before the four travelers.

"I’ve thought about it all night." His voice remained calm. "I wanted to walk beside all of you." His eyes drifted toward the children standing behind the crowd. "But this village still needs its chief. If every experienced fighter leaves, who protects our families?"

Silence spread across the gathering. No one argued. Everyone understood.

Rokan placed a hand on Aren’s shoulder. "You’ve shown us a future beyond survival. Now go, and discover what lies beyond this valley."

Aren nodded firmly. "I’ll return."

The old chief smiled. "I know."

---

Elder Mira stepped forward carrying four small cloth bags, handing one each to Aren, Doran, Jarek, and Lira.

"If someone is wounded, boil these leaves. They’ll reduce fever and help prevent infection."

Lira accepted hers with both hands. "I won’t disappoint you, Master."

Elder Mira smiled gently. "You don’t have to be perfect. You only have to keep learning." Then she looked toward Aren. "Bring everyone home."

"I will," Aren answered without hesitation.

---

Chief Rokan slowly raised his hand. The entire village fell silent.

"I have watched this village survive through many winters. I have seen children become hunters, and hunters become elders." He paused. "But today, we take our first step toward something greater." His deep voice echoed across the valley. "We do not leave seeking glory. We leave seeking knowledge. And one day, that knowledge will build a civilization."

Every villager raised a closed fist against their chest — the oldest farewell tradition of the village. A promise to return home. Aren returned the gesture. Then, without another word, the four travelers crossed the wooden gate.

Chief Rokan remained standing there, watching until they disappeared into the forest.

---

The Civilization System quietly appeared.

Aren closed the panel. Without looking back, he stepped deeper into the Whispering Forest.

---

The forest was unlike anything they had seen before. Ancient trees towered into the sky, their thick branches blocking most of the sunlight. The deeper they walked, the colder the air became. Even the sound of birds slowly disappeared — only the wind whispered through the leaves.

Jarek lowered his voice instinctively. "I don’t like this place."

Doran nodded. "I’ve hunted near its edge. Never dared enter." He scanned the trees carefully. "Stay close. No one wanders off alone."

Everyone silently agreed.

---

Several hours later, Doran suddenly stopped. He crouched beside a patch of soft mud, his expression changing immediately.

"There are tracks."

The others gathered around. Not wolves. Not bears. Human footprints — fresh, very fresh.

Doran studied them carefully. "Seven people. They passed here this morning."

"The messenger?" Aren asked.

Doran shook his head. "No. There are too many. And these footprints are heavier — they’re carrying equipment."

Silence filled the forest. Jarek gripped his spear.

"So we’re not the only ones heading to Stone River."

Before anyone could answer, the Civilization System flashed.

Aren slowly raised his hand. The group stopped moving. No one spoke.

Somewhere ahead, another group was making its way through the ancient forest. Whether they were friend or foe, no one could say. But one thing was certain — the journey to Stone River had only just begun.
