Chapter 145: Answer Post
A white rib cage stood at the center of the round chamber. Thick cords passed through the bone and fed a red organ that beat hard enough to shake the hooks hanging from the ceiling. The organ contracted around one cord and drew it through wet flesh.
SQUELCH!
The cord vanished into the organ. A pale body grew behind it, first as a spine and open chest, followed by long limbs and a smooth human face.
The creature stepped out of the cage. Its chest remained open by design, exposing white ribs, black tendons, and a red gland pumping dark fluid through clear veins. Rings marked every joint in its body.
Vaela stopped at the chamber entrance. "The smaller servants were only its hands. This body controls the hooks and chooses where they cut."
Jaro moved between the bowl boy and the nearest hanging blade. "I was hoping the large one might be less interested in us. Size usually improves manners only in stories."
Renn guided the survivors behind Orrek. "All twenty-one are inside the chamber. The way back is blocked by the crawling hands, so we need another exit."
Orrek wrapped the chain around his waist. His wounded shoulder hung close to his ribs, and blood still ran from his cut palm. "I can hold anything coming around the cage. Somebody else will have to cut the hooks that come over it."
The creature raised both hands.
Pain struck every joint in Kael’s body. Pale rings flashed around his wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, jaw, and spine. The mark on his palm split into smaller circles that followed each movement.
Hooks above the survivors tilted toward held sleeves and folded cloth. The bowl trembled between the boy’s hands, but he kept it against his chest.
The organ pulled another cord through its throat.
GRIND!
Its ribs scraped together. The sound carried no words, yet the creature’s purpose was clear: separate Kael’s joints until his body could no longer strike as one.
It crossed the chamber and touched his right elbow.
CLICK!
The joint locked. His hand opened without permission.
A second touch reached his raised knee.
CLICK!
The leg stopped half-bent. Kael dropped his weight through the trapped angle instead of fighting to straighten it.
BOOM!
The floor cratered beneath his heel. The shock threw the creature backward and cracked two drains near the cage.
Vaela saw black tendons tighten inside its chest. "The red organ pulls each lock through those cords. Damage the body if you can, but the locks will continue until the feed is broken."
The creature attacked again. Two fingers struck Kael’s wrist, ribs, and hip in quick succession.
CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!
His breath caught. One side of his body tried to compensate for the other, and the pale rings brightened each time a different joint carried the strain.
The creature turned toward Vaela after hearing her warning.
Kael forced his locked hip to turn. His bent knee drove him sideways, and his stiff forearm struck the creature’s throat.
THUD!
A black tendon snapped inside the open chest.
SNAP!
The calm face tightened. Hooks dropped from the ceiling toward Kael’s shoulder, wrist, spine, and the back of his knee.
Orrek dragged the chain across the chamber floor.
CLANG!
The links caught one hook and pulled it away from the survivors. Vaela cut a second cord while Renn moved the group behind the broken section of cage.
A third hook changed direction and dropped toward Renn’s count cloth. He pushed the ash-lipped survivor behind him and raised his forearm, leaving the old cuts exposed.
Jaro struck the hook with the piece of white plate he had carried from the door.
CLANG!
The impact knocked it sideways but split the plate in his hands. Sova caught the loose cord, wrapped it around a broken rib, and pulled until the hook buried itself in the floor.
"The count is still here," Renn said, dragging the cloth beneath his shirt. "Keep everyone behind the cage until Kael can move."
Two hooks still reached Kael.
One tore through his shoulder. Another punched behind his knee and pulled both wounds in opposite directions.
RIP!
The Sovereign Root opened inside the pain. Kael chose the four parts of his body needed to keep moving as one through the locks and torn flesh.
Gravity Vector Impact. Cellular Acceleration. Regenerative Dominion. Primordial Marrow Layer.

Heat spread through the wounds. Cellular Acceleration forced damaged tissue to answer his movement faster, Regenerative Dominion closed the widest tears, and Primordial Marrow Layer strengthened the bones beneath the locking rings. Gravity Vector Impact carried force through the body the hooks had failed to divide.
Kael turned with both hooks still inside him. The shoulder wound widened, but the pull rotated his torso. The hook behind his knee dragged him lower and placed his head beneath the creature’s face.
He drove his forehead upward.
CRACK!
The smooth face split from brow to mouth. White fluid covered Kael’s eyes, but Threat Perception Instinct caught the next movement before the creature reached his marked hand.
Kael struck its open chest with his shoulder.
BOOM!
White ribs folded inward. Black tendons wrapped around his arm and tightened, trying to bind the joint before he could strike again.
Kael bit through one.
CRUNCH!
Bitter fluid filled his mouth. He spat it aside and drove his fist through the broken ribs.
The central organ beat faster. Every remaining hook rose to protect it.
Orrek planted both feet and pulled the chain from his waist. The captured hook dragged across the cage, forcing two ribs apart.
Vaela entered the opening and cut the cord controlling Kael’s wrist.
SLASH!
The ring around his hand went dark.
"Your right side is free," she called. "The main organ is behind the lower ribs."
Kael grabbed the opening with both hands. The mark on his palm burned, but his fingers closed.
He tore the cage apart.
RIP!
The organ struck the air once.
THUD!
Kael drove his knee into its center.
THUD!
Force moved from his planted foot through his hip, spine, shoulder, and wounded hand. The organ burst around his knee.
SPLAT!
Red fluid, darker residue, and white matter sprayed across the chamber. Every pale ring on Kael’s body cracked and fell away.
SHATTER!
The Removal Body dropped to its knees. Its split face remained calm even as its chest collapsed.
Kael caught it by the throat and slammed it into the broken cage.
BANG!
The second impact crushed its ribs around the remains of the organ.
BANG!
Silence reached the chamber one hook at a time. Metal stopped shaking, cords went slack, and the crawling hands behind the formation dropped from the walls.
Renn counted the survivors. His voice broke twice, but every person answered before he reached twenty-one.
Vaela went to Orrek first. She wrapped his shoulder against his chest and checked the fresh cut in his palm. "Keeping the chain below the joint saved it from tearing completely, but another lift may finish the damage. Leave the arm bound while the people beside you help with the load."
Orrek sat beside the two survivors he had protected and settled the chain across his waist. "I can guard from here without raising it. Tell them where to stand, and I will keep the hooks away from their legs."
The bowl boy lifted his cracked bowl. Jaro examined the old fracture along its side and gave him a solemn nod.
"It has survived another official attempt on its life," Jaro said. "At this point, we may need to put it in charge."
The boy almost smiled. Renn touched his shoulder and added him to the final count.
Far away, Ivara Thane felt the fourth link of her chain tremble beneath its white brace. The metal tightened around her wrist until blood ran between her fingers, but the brace held and the link did not break.
Inside the chamber, Vaela examined the fluids spreading from the destroyed organ. Silver matter and dark fluid settled into the drains. A clear thread separated from both and began crawling toward a narrow opening beneath the cage.
"Something is moving," she warned. "The clear fluid is carrying itself."
Kael stamped at it.
CRACK!
The floor broke, but the fluid slipped through the fracture and reached the drain. Dark glass teeth opened below it, allowing the clear thread to fall into a deeper channel.
Jaro leaned over the edge without stepping closer. "Please tell me the part that escaped was unimportant. I would enjoy hearing one lie before we follow it."
Kael looked at the cracked mark on his palm. Pale lines now reached faintly along his wrist, shoulder, chest, knee, and heel. The Root had recorded Whole-Body Impact Continuity as a seed, and repeated proof was still required before it could integrate.
"The organ learned how my body carried force," he said. "The clear thread carried that learning down the drain."
A low tremor moved through the chamber.
RUMBLE!
The deeper drain widened beneath the broken cage. Cold air rose from it, carrying the smell of clean metal and opened stone.
Renn checked the count cloth. "All twenty-one can move, although Orrek and three others need help on the descent."
Vaela tightened Orrek’s binding and assigned hands to the injured. The group kept clear of the dark glass teeth until Kael found a strip of unbroken floor along the edge.
He stepped over the dead Removal Body and approached the opening.
The enemy had failed to take his hand or divide his joints. Far below, a second set of hooks clicked open along the drain.
