The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture

Chapter 146: Breath Taken Raw

Cold air rose through the dark glass teeth below the broken cage.

HISS!

Kael felt it first in the wounds left by the Removal Body. His shoulder pulled backward, his knee stiffened, and the cuts across his palm opened around the cracked mark.

The clear fluid that had escaped the dead organ spread through a row of glass channels beneath the floor. Tiny shapes moved inside it, repeating the strikes Kael had used in the last chamber. One drove a shoulder into a rib cage. Another raised a knee. A third tore two white ribs apart.

Vaela crouched at the edge and kept her wrapped blade away from the teeth. "The fluid carried a copy of the fight. Whatever is below us is testing each movement before we enter."

Jaro leaned over her shoulder for one look and moved back. "A liquid that remembers being hit should remain somebody else’s problem. We still need a way down, unfortunately."

Renn gathered the survivors near the far wall and checked the count. "All twenty-one are moving. Orrek needs help on his right side, and the ash-lipped man cannot close his hand."

Orrek accepted Sova’s support without pretending his shoulder could carry another person. The chain remained around his waist. "Keep everyone away from the drain until Kael finds what makes the air move. Broken glass will do enough damage without whatever is breathing beneath us."

Vaela cut a strip from the dead organ’s outer membrane and held it above the drain with the flat of her blade. The cold air barely touched it until she smeared one end with blood from Kael’s palm.

The stained end snapped downward.

WHIP!

The membrane struck the glass teeth and tore in half. Its clean end remained on Vaela’s blade, while the bloodied piece disappeared into the channel below.

"It follows damage it has already sampled," she said. "Fresh material means nothing until the fluid connects it to Kael."

Renn looked at the injured people along the wall. "Can it reach them through his mark the way the door did?"

Vaela watched the glass channels instead of offering comfort she could not prove. "The current has only turned toward Kael so far. Keep every wound covered, and call out if a binding starts pulling toward the drain."

Sova checked the ash-lipped man’s wrapped palm. Jaro secured every loose strip of cloth before the suction could catch it. The bowl boy sat between two adults with both arms around the cracked metal.

The teeth opened wider.

CLACK!

Cold air struck Kael’s chest. It was too narrow to be wind and too weak to push his body. The pull entered his injuries instead, tightening each wound a moment before the joint around it moved.

Kael raised his right foot. His knee responded late.

He turned his shoulder. The breath pulled the healing cut in the opposite direction.

The thing beneath the drain was measuring how one damaged part helped another continue moving.

Vaela watched his heel scrape across the floor. "It pulls before the next joint takes the load. Keep your movements small. The hooks begin when a knee carries your full weight."

Kael stepped forward anyway. The floor tilted by the width of a finger.

SCRAPE!

Glass teeth dragged beneath him. A black hook shot from the drain and stopped in the empty air between his knee and hip.

The hook tightened.

Pain crossed both joints at once. His foot tried to move without the rest of his body, and the delayed step almost twisted the knee sideways.

The Sovereign Root opened behind his sight. Kael chose the resistance and perception needed to find the pull before it separated one movement from the next.

He split the two shards between Metaphysical Resistance and Threat Perception Instinct.

====================================================================

The cold remained after the panel closed. Threat Perception Instinct caught a slight tightening inside the drain before each hook formed, while Metaphysical Resistance kept the pull from convincing his joints to answer separately.

Kael exhaled into the current.

The teeth snapped shut.

CLACK!

Three hooks appeared around him. One pulled his shoulder backward, another caught the movement beginning in his knee, and the third tightened across his ribs before his next breath.

Kael grabbed the nearest hook with his marked hand. Nothing solid showed in the air, but his fingers closed around something as tough as wet tendon.

He tore it apart.

RIP!

Clear fluid sprayed across his knuckles. The mark cracked farther up his wrist, and the remaining hooks pulled hard enough to bend his body in three directions.

The authority seed inside him remained incomplete and offered no finished technique. Kael had to keep his movements connected by force and choice while the hooks searched for a delay they could widen.

He planted his heel.

BOOM!

The floor cracked from his foot to the drain. Two glass teeth broke, and cold air escaped through the fracture.

HISS!

A survivor stumbled as shards lifted from the floor. Orrek caught the man’s belt with his uninjured hand and pulled him behind the wall line.

"Keep your feet away from the glass," he called. "The broken pieces are moving toward the suction."

Renn guided the count around the rising fragments. Vaela drove her blade into a seam opening beneath the bowl boy and held it shut until Sova moved him.

Jaro kicked one loose shard toward the drain.

The suction caught it and threw it back.

THUNK!

Glass buried itself in the wall beside his ear. Jaro went pale and lowered his foot. "I have finished helping from this position. Somebody with better ideas may continue."

Kael walked into the cold air. Every step tried to lag at a different joint, but he kept his heel, knee, hip, and spine moving through one rough motion.

His marked hand closed around the rim.

The glass teeth cut his palm. Clear fluid climbed through the blood, filling with smaller copies of his fingers as they tightened.

Kael squeezed.

CRACK!

Three teeth shattered. The current lost its narrow shape and spread across the chamber floor. Beneath the broken rim, transparent sacs inflated around a black valve.

Vaela saw them. "Those sacs are pulling the air. Break the valve, and the hooks lose the pressure feeding them."

The clear sample pulsed inside its channel. A shutter began closing between Kael and the valve, protecting the fluid before it protected the damaged teeth.

Renn noticed the choice. "It is protecting the sample. The chamber can lose the valve as long as the fluid gets away."

Kael tore another tooth from the rim and drove it through the nearest air sac.

POP!

Cold vapor burst around his arm. The hook across his ribs loosened.

He crushed a second sac and reached for the valve.

The clear fluid rushed into a lower channel. Blackstone shutters closed over it before Kael could catch the last thread.

CLANG!

Kael struck the black valve.

CRUNCH!

Its casing folded inward. Air sacs burst along both sides of the drain, and the remaining hooks vanished from his body.

Kael pulled his hand from the broken rim. Glass remained buried in two cuts across his palm, and the clear fluid around them kept trying to crawl toward the lower channel.

Vaela caught his wrist before he closed the hand. "Leave the fingers open, because I will have to search for every piece if the glass breaks beneath the skin. Whatever waits below is already pulling on you."

She removed the first shard with the tip of her blade and pressed folded cloth into the cut. The second had lodged beside the cracked mark. Kael held still while she worked it free.

Kael flexed the fingers once after she wrapped them. The grip held. Pain remained sharp enough to warn him where the glass had entered.

Renn shifted the formation toward the intact side of the chamber. People who could still use both hands supported those who could not, while Sova kept the bowl boy and the ash-lipped man away from the broken channels.

The sample had escaped, but it carried damage with it. Crushed glass and black fragments followed the fluid into the lower channel.

Vaela moved closer once the suction stopped. She used the flat of her blade to lift a strip of transparent membrane from the broken lungs. "Someone shaped these sacs around a blackstone valve, so the cold was never weather. The lower channel leads to whatever commands them."

Jaro kept one hand against the wall where the thrown shard had missed him. "Built parts are welcome news. People build badly all the time."

Renn counted twenty-one breaths, some shallow and several broken by coughs, until every protected person had answered from the intact side of the chamber.

Kael examined the lower channel. The clear sample moved beyond sight, carrying copies of his strikes and pieces of the valve he had destroyed.

A wet pull sounded beneath the chamber.

SQUELCH!

Pain tightened along every tendon in his body. His fingers curled, his knee bent, and his shoulder dragged forward as if cords beneath the skin had been caught from below.

Vaela took one look at the movement and motioned everyone away from him. "Whatever waits below has the sample, and it is pulling on the tissue that connects his joints."

Orrek tightened the chain around his waist and placed the survivors behind the broken cage. "We will follow once Kael can move without dragging the hooks toward us. Keep every foot behind the drain until he calls us forward."

Kael opened his hand, straightened the knee, and forced the wounded shoulder back into place. The movements hurt, but they remained part of the same body.

The pull beneath him tightened again.

He stepped toward the lower passage before it could choose another tendon.
