The bright knot above the exit spread before anyone could pass beneath it.

One point became three, and each of those divided again. Nine white lights moved across the low ceiling until they hung over different parts of the next chamber. Pale cords dropped from them and touched the black floor.

The first cord struck in front of Kael. Another landed beside Vaela’s white edge, while a third drew a line toward Orrek’s injured shoulder. A gray loop circled Renn’s count cloth without touching his hands. Twenty-one thinner lines reached for the survivors and began separating them into narrow paths.

Jaro stared at the lights as the last lines settled around his feet. His path ended in a small white square instead of joining any of the others. "I saw this arrangement in old crew drawings. They called it a lane array, and every line was meant to separate a worker from the people beside him."

Vaela watched the cords tighten. "Renn, keep the pairs together, and do not let anyone follow the line beneath their own feet. Jaro can call whatever he recognizes while we move."

Renn wrapped the count cloth around his bleeding palm. His throat had not recovered from the previous room, so he used the rasping voice he had left. "Everyone stays with the person beside them. Watch my hand if you cannot hear me, and keep the children between the adults."

The nine ceiling lights flared together, and pressure gathered along every cord.

BOOM!

Every white point drove force into the floor at once. The survivor paths slid away from Kael’s lane, carrying boots with them. The furnace-scar woman caught the child against her hip, and Tavin seized the back of her coat before the moving stone could take him in the opposite direction.

Kael stepped across the nearest pale cord.

A band snapped around his shin and crushed inward. Pain struck the bone hard enough to bend his knee, while gray ash poured across his boot and climbed toward the wound. The ash locked the band in place and tightened whenever his weight shifted toward another path.

Kael forced his leg straight. "Bring everyone toward the middle, but wait until Vaela finds the weakest lines. I will keep the floor busy."

Vaela crouched near the path assigned to her blade. The white edge trembled in her hand, and the wrist it had burned earlier was already dark beneath the skin. "Give me a moment. Some cords are carrying more force than the others, and cutting the wrong one will close the space around the children."

Orrek planted his sound hand against the wall. His own path climbed his boot, crossed his ribs, and pulled at the old damage in his shoulder. "The line is dragging the arm out of its socket again. I can hold it for a little while, but someone needs to move before the shoulder gives way."

Jaro shuffled sideways before the square beneath him could close around his heel. "Tell me where the pull changes. The floor slows whenever pain forces a different movement, and I can use that to call the crossings."

Orrek laughed once, and two frightened survivors looked toward him instead of the paths beneath their feet. Renn used the distraction to guide the first pair across a weak seam. Their frightened steps were uneven, but both reached the same patch of floor.

The white cords bent toward the new crossing and dragged across the stone after their ankles.

SCRAPE!

Renn pulled one survivor forward while the other clung to his belt. Blood rose in his mouth when he called the next pair, yet he kept his hand high enough for everyone to see. The count cloth remained wrapped around his other fist.

Kael moved into the open center.

His lane widened beneath him and pushed every survivor path farther away. Pale rods rose around his body, measuring the reach of his arms, the bend of his knees, and the distance he could cover before another person was hurt. The chamber had studied his strikes in the mark hall and expected him to answer separation with violence.

He let it wait.

One breath passed. The rods leaned toward his shoulders and prepared for a punch.

Kael drove his heel into the floor instead.

CRACK!

Stone split beneath his boot, and the force travelled along the lane holding him rather than striking the rods. Four paths near Renn slowed. Vaela saw the opening and cut the weakest cord beside her knee.

HISS!

Heat rolled over her fingers. The black stain spread from her wrist to the middle of her forearm, but the cord snapped and left a rough crossing between two survivor paths. Jaro caught her elbow before the blade could fall.

"My hand still works," Vaela said through her teeth. "Move the next pair while I keep this crossing open, and come back if the stain reaches my elbow."

Jaro released her, although his worried glance stayed on the black stain. "I will take them across and return before you need to ask. Keep the blade low, because your fingers are already shaking."

His fear sounded ordinary enough to make the woman beside him move. She took his hand, crossed the broken cord, and dragged her partner after her. The array tried to rebuild the path behind them, but Orrek shoved his damaged shoulder into the wall and trapped the new cord beneath his chain.

THUD!

His face lost its color. Fresh blood soaked through the cloth around his shoulder, though his feet remained planted. "Renn, move the next pair now. The shoulder is sliding, and I cannot keep this cord under the chain much longer."

Renn checked the twenty-one faces instead of answering the complaint. "Pair four is across. Pair five follows my hand, and pair six waits until Orrek can breathe without falling over."

The ceiling lights turned toward Kael, and every pale rod tightened around his lane.

BOOM!

Pressure left the walls and struck Kael from every side. The pale rods closed until each one marked a joint, a likely blow, or the farthest point he could reach to protect someone. None touched him yet. They pressed the lane itself against his body and tried to hold him alone while the survivors were divided.

Hostile force drove through his shin, spine, and bleeding palm. The Sovereign Root answered where only Kael could see it.

Weight settled deeper into Kael’s frame. The cracked floor dipped beneath him, and two measuring rods shivered as his body became harder to move. Heat spread through his marrow, while torn flesh around his shin tightened enough to stop spilling blood into his boot.

Kael closed both hands around the nearest rods.

The chamber had raised them to measure him. It had not expected him to use them as handles.

He pulled them apart.

SHATTER!

Broken pieces struck the floor and burst into gray ash. Every survivor path bucked. Renn caught a falling man by the back of his coat, while the furnace-scar woman lowered the child and used both arms to steady Tavin.

Kael broke a third rod.

CRACK!

The remaining rods flattened into broad plates above his shoulders and pressed him toward his knees. Stone sank under his feet. His new density held the load inside his body, and the gathered force beneath him had nowhere clean to escape.

He drove upward.

KA-BOOOOMM!!!

The plate above him broke across its center. The impact rolled through his lane and knocked the nearby paths out of place without reaching the survivors as a blind blast. Twenty-one narrow routes blurred into one rough crossing.

Renn raised the count cloth and waved everyone forward. "All pairs move together. Do not stop for dropped shoes or loose cloth, because we can recover objects after every living body reaches the far side."

The twenty-one survivors crossed without order or beauty. Some stumbled, others crawled, and two adults carried the weakest between them. Orrek released the trapped cord only after Vaela passed him, and Jaro kicked his white square away whenever it tried to settle beneath another survivor.

Renn counted each person with his eyes. Blood ran over his lower lip, but relief softened his face when the final pair reached him. "All twenty-one are here, Kael. The crossing is clear."

Kael tore the last plate from the ceiling.

SNAP!

The array split through its center without vanishing, and white fragments pulled themselves into the ceiling cracks with everything they had learned.

A staircase opened beyond the broken floor. Black steps descended out of sight, and thin white veins moved along both walls beside them. The air rising from below smelled of cold stone, old ash, and water sealed away from light.

Kael’s shin throbbed inside his blood-wet boot as Vaela wrapped her burned wrist without taking her eyes off the stairs. Orrek leaned against the wall long enough to settle his shoulder, while Renn retied the count cloth around his palm. The twenty-one gathered at the stairhead, bruised and still together.

Kael stepped onto the first black stair with zero shards remaining. "Start down while the path is open. Whatever received those broken pieces will already be preparing the next room."

The survivors followed him into the dark before the lane array could rebuild itself behind them.
