Chapter 134: Impact Stays Counted
The slanted passage opened so suddenly that the survivors nearly walked into Kael’s back, but his raised hand stopped all twenty-one before they crossed the threshold.
The broad room ahead had polished black walls and hundreds of shallow dents across its floor. Round pits, long grooves, cracked curves, and open-palm marks all held pale light.
Kael recognized his heel stamp, the path of his elbow, and the sideways force he had driven through the floor to free Orrek.
Vaela stayed outside the threshold and rested her shaking wrist against one knee before lowering the white edge toward the nearest mark.
"Some of these belong to him," she said. "The rest look close enough to fool someone who is tired."
Jaro stared at the dents, and the little color left in his face disappeared. "Old white-room builders called this an impact-mark hall. It keeps what struck the rooms before it, although I have never seen one with so many guesses mixed into the record."
Orrek held his torn sleeve away from the fresh cut on his upper arm. Blood had soaked the cloth down to his elbow, while his injured shoulder remained stiff from the hooks. "I would like to know what happens when the room finishes studying him, because the rest of us are standing inside its answer."
Jaro searched the dents while rubbing one thumb across his mouth. "The old drawings ended at the doorway, so I cannot promise much. Avoid anything shaped like your chain or shoulder until the room shows us what moves."
Renn crouched near the entrance and covered his mouth with the count cloth. A cough broke through before he could smother it.
COUGH!
A gray ring appeared on the floor beside his left foot.
The furnace-scar woman pulled the boy behind her knee, and Tavin copied her. One pale streak ended at her heel, while another bent beyond Tavin as if guessing where he might run.
Renn looked down at the gray ring. "It copied the cough."
"It copied where your body moved with it," Vaela said. "Keep the cloth close, but do not cough the same way twice."
Kael stepped between Renn and the mark. Pale light spread across the floor.
A line drew itself ten paces ahead of him. It rose from an empty patch at shoulder height, crossed the air, and ended in a bright burst against the opposite wall. The path matched one of his right-handed punches.
His fist tightened before he could stop it.
SCRATCH! SCRATCH! SCRATCH!
Fresh lines predicted a low stamp, a shoulder drive, and attacks from his knees, elbows, and open hands until the floor resembled instructions for killing absent bodies.
The survivors crowded closer, careful not to step on the new marks.
"It is writing him before he moves," Yedda whispered.
Renn rose with one hand pressed to his throat. "Most of the lines are guesses. It wants him to prove which ones are true."
Vaela glanced back at him. "Keep watching the wrong ones. A trap built from guesses has to correct itself somewhere."
Kael remained still while the room used everything the earlier passages had learned. Its lines expected him to close distance, break resistance, and shield the twenty-one behind him.
HUM!
A bright curve formed around his left foot and climbed toward his chest. The room expected a forward rush.
Kael stepped backward.
The light flickered. A new curve hurried after him, trying to turn the retreat into another prediction, but its edge came out uneven.
"It had to change the mark," Renn said. "The new line is thinner near his heel."
Jaro shifted his weight away from the glowing floor. "We gained a few steps, but the whole line still has to cross."
Vaela was already looking behind him. "Watch the rear. Everyone is staring at Kael."
A low white line crept behind the survivors until it touched Renn’s shadow and forced the group toward the strike marks ahead.
Orrek turned at the scrape. Pain caught his shoulder and dragged a grunt from him.
GRUNT!
A pale notch opened beside the wall at the exact height where he would brace.
Vaela reached for his sleeve. "Keep your shoulder away from the stone, because the room has already marked where you would brace it."
Orrek kept both feet planted even as the line came nearer. "The shoulder cannot brace against the wall anyway. I can hold the center until the line passes, but keep the rear pair away from my left side."
The line slid past him and snapped at Renn.
CLINK!
A narrow white band closed around the count cloth. Renn’s fingers jerked open as the band pulled the cloth toward the floor. Two of the charcoal names folded beneath its edge.
He caught the other end with both hands. The damaged skin across his palm split again, and blood ran between his fingers.
"Kael," he gasped. "I cannot let it take the count."
Kael dropped to one knee. Every bright line expected him to charge forward or turn toward the wall, so he drove his left palm into an unmarked patch of floor and sent the force sideways.
THUD!
Stone jumped beneath the survivors. The white band cracked, but a pale current raced from the floor into Kael’s wrist. It bit through skin and muscle, searching for the path his force had taken so the room could use it again.

Nothing changed in the cut across Kael’s palm. Metaphysical Resistance did not close wounds or strengthen bone. It met the hall’s hold where the pale current was trying to fix his movement into a clean line. The mark blurred around his hand, and its grip weakened before it could finish copying the force.
Kael twisted his wrist.
CRACK!
The band around Renn’s cloth broke. Renn stumbled backward and clutched the count to his chest. His eyes watered from the pull against his throat, though his fingers immediately unfolded the two trapped names.
"All twenty-one are still here," he said after checking them twice. "The room bent two marks, but it did not take anyone."
Orrek checked the blood spreading down his sleeve. "Keep both hands on the cloth, Renn. I started toward you when the band closed, but this shoulder will not carry another rush."
Renn heard the concern, tightened the cloth around his palm, and nodded. Orrek moved closer to the rear pair and gave them his uninjured hand before the marks could separate them.
The marks near them shifted. Gray strokes appeared under the words, but they tangled where Renn’s fear met Orrek’s attempt to hide his own.
Vaela noticed the crooked lines first. "Keep talking as you move, but do not repeat yourselves. The room follows feet better than reasons."
Jaro stared at the floor, swallowed, and waved the pair behind him closer. "I can complain without preparation, although anyone who survives this room may regret hearing the complete list. The torn shoe near my heel can occupy us until we reach the next opening."
Vaela pointed him toward that opening and moved with him, keeping her blade between his ankle and the nearest mark.
The survivors moved in uneven pairs. One woman cursed her torn shoe while helping Tavin around a bright groove, and a hungry man apologized to his stomach. Jaro described three safer jobs he wanted, while Orrek doubted any would hire a man who screamed at floors.
Their fear never vanished. It changed hands, interrupted sentences, and made people laugh at the wrong moments. The hall copied their steps, but its marks grew crooked whenever one person moved for another.
Kael led them through the crowded strike lines without giving the room the same answer twice. Vaela cut one false mark and tapped the next with the flat of her blade. Orrek pretended to brace at the wall, stopped before the notch could close, and used his uninjured hand to pull Yedda past it. Renn counted with pressure from his fingers rather than speaking the numbers aloud.
All twenty-one reached the far side, where Vaela lowered the white edge and pressed her shaking wrist against her ribs. Orrek’s fresh arm cut had soaked through the sleeve, and the older shoulder injury left him breathing through his teeth. Renn wrapped the reopened palm around his cloth and checked every charcoal name once more before allowing the group to spread out.
The failed predictions lifted from the floor and gathered above the exit. They formed one bright knot, no larger than Kael’s fist.
It struck the stone once, paused, and struck again.
TAP! TAP!
The sound reached Kael through his teeth. Behind the knot, pale threads spread into the next chamber and divided into many paths.
Jaro wiped sweat from his mouth. "Those threads are carrying every failed prediction into the next chamber, so whatever waits there will begin with what this room learned."
Kael looked back at the scarred floor. It had copied strikes, coughs, injuries, jokes, and fear, yet none of its marks explained why the survivors kept pulling one another upright.
Blood ran from his palm as he stepped beneath the knot. His shard reserve had returned to zero, Renn still held twenty-one names, and the next room was already arranging what this one had learned.
A second pulse woke inside the knot, brighter than the first.
