The Five Evolution

Chapter 63: Operation Tokyo.

『"This is it. No going back now."』

The alarm went off at 4am, two hours earlier than usual and Amara killed it before the second buzz. She was already up and awake.

Following this, her device buzzed with a message: DEPLOYMENT: TOKYO. 0800 HOURS. FINAL BRIEFING IN 30 MINUTES.

She sat up slowly, the damage done to her ribs during the vampire mission already completely healed thanks to the Institute’s advanced medical tech.

Her hands instinctively went to her ribs however, not to check if there was still any pain but to remind herself that she was a shaper at last.

But she knew Tokyo was going to be something else entirely. The training wheels were coming off.

Although, according to Dante, they were already off two days ago. Which explained why he didn’t lift a finger to help.

Her device buzzed again. This time it was a private message.

ETHAN: You awake?

AMARA: Unfortunately.

ETHAN: Want coffee before briefing?

AMARA: I wouldn’t mind a cup. Or two.

She dressed quickly in the same black tactical gear she’d worn during the vampire mission. It no longer felt foreign. And when she looked in the mirror, she saw a soldier staring back at her.

Eventually, she stepped into the Relaxation Center, and most of the team was already there. Ethan stood by the coffee maker with two cups prepared.

Raj was slumped on the couch, while Hiro paced anxiously near the windows like a caged animal, unable to stay still. Sophia was nowhere to be seen.

"Morning," Amara said quietly, accepting the warm cup from Ethan.

"Morning," he replied as their fingers brushed during the exchange.

"Sophie’s running late," Raj observed. "That’s not like her." He paused, reconsidering. "Okay, that’s totally like her, but still."

"She’s probably stress-eating in her room," Hiro muttered, still pacing. "I would be. Hell, I already did. Ate an entire box of granola bars at three in the morning... or is it three in the midnight?"

As if called forth by the conversation, Sophia appeared from the hallway. Her hair was still damp from the shower, and her expression was distant, almost haunted.

"You okay?" Amara asked, setting down her coffee immediately. That look on Sophia’s face activated every protective instinct she had.

Sophia blinked slowly, like she was coming back from somewhere far away. "I think I just had a vision. Just now, in the shower."

Everyone went still.

"What kind of vision?" Ethan asked carefully, also setting down his coffee.

"Tokyo." Sophia’s voice was audible but strained. "I saw... something. Someone. Two someones actually. There were two of them. Felt like they were waiting for us, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t to hand us presents."

"The Apostles?" Hiro’s hand unconsciously tightened into a fist.

"I don’t know. The vision was all... blurry." Sophia moved to the couch, collapsing into it. "But whoever they were, it seemed like they were expecting us. That much I know."

"That was to be expected, but at least we have a little confirmation now." Ethan sipped on his coffee.

"Does the Director know?" Amara asked.

"Not yet. It literally just happened." Sophia pulled out her device with one hand. "But I guess I’ll give him the message before briefing."

Before she could, all their devices buzzed again. A general alert this time: ALL DEPLOYED PERSONNEL: CENTRAL COMMAND. NOW.

"That’s our cue," Ethan said, already on the move.

"Here we go," Raj said, standing and cracking his knuckles. "Time to go save Tokyo."

They moved as a unit through Institute corridors that no longer felt quite so foreign. Over a month of living here had familiarized them with the shifting architecture.

They knew which turns led to training grounds, which lifts descended to medical, and which passages only appeared when you needed them.

The Institute had stopped feeling like a prison and started feeling like home. A feeling Amara wasn’t too keen about having.

Central Command was packed when they arrived.

Dozens of Awakeners Amara didn’t recognize filled the massive operations hub. Some wore uniforms marking them as members of the Asia-Pacific branch, with an insignia of a lotus.

There were also familiar faces present like Unit 11-B and the tyrant reinforcements. Amara’s eyes settled on Dante first, who sat at the rear with his legs crossed, not particularly doing anything.

Then on Maya, who was adjusting the ribbon on her ponytail just when the Director moved to the front of a holographic display of Tokyo.

"Attention," he said, and the room fell silent instantly. "The Tokyo operation launches in three hours, so I’ll keep this brief."

The display zoomed in on the massive crater where the Darkness Malice had manifested nearly a month ago.

"Initial reports estimated thirty-two spawn entities. Current count is two hundred seventeen and rising. They’re hatching faster than our models predicted and have begun constructing nest structures throughout Tokyo’s underground."

Dante gave a low whistle from the back of the room. "Talk about a parasite problem."

"Indeed," the Director agreed grimly, then continued. "That means subway systems, sewers, maintenance tunnels, abandoned stations. Intelligence suggests they’re converging mostly among what seems to be a core."

He pulled up spectral imaging showing massive EMF signatures clustered in specific locations. "Primary objective will be to Exterminate all spawn before they can complete whatever they’re doing down there."

"Wait, I thought these things were meant to have zero intelligence?" Hiro asked for all of them. "And now they may be doing something down there? Seems like a pretty significant intelligence upgrade to me."

The Director nodded, acknowledging the question. "That’s one of several concerning developments. Perhaps it has something to do with the core.

He paused for a moment. "Which brings me to Secondary Objective: locate and destroy the core entity identified at the center of the convergence pattern."

His eyes swept across the assembled Awakeners, making brief contact with individuals throughout the room. "You’ll be divided into eight teams. Alpha through Theta. Each team assigned specific zones."

Then his gaze focused directly on Amara and the others, and she felt the weight of that attention. "The Five will operate as Team Delta, supported by Unit 11-B’s full roster."

The holographic display highlighted a location deep beneath the city. "You’ll take the deepest insertion point at the abandoned Nakanoshima Station complex, approximately three hundred meters below current street level. It’s the closest position to the core entity’s suspected location."

Of course we get the deepest and likely most dangerous assignment, Amara thought to herself. She would have been happy just killing off spawns anywhere else in Tokyo.

The Director took a deep breath and the atmosphere suddenly got tense. "Intelligence also suggests the Apostles may have interest in this operation. So if you encounter unknown Awakeners, do not engage without authorization."

Björn folded his arms. "They do not stand a chance against the son of Sigurd and the might of his—"

The Director’s gaze shifted directly to Björn with enough intensity to actually make him stop talking mid-sentence. "You are not to engage. You are to report immediately and withdraw."

Then his attention went to the whole room. "This applies to everyone. The Apostles are not random hostiles, they’re organized, experienced, and extremely dangerous. Is that Understood?"

A chorus of affirmation rose from the assembled Awakeners in a unified "Yes, sir" that echoed through Central Command.

"Good." The Director’s posture relaxed a little. "Deployment begins in three hours. Final checks. Gear up. Review your zone assignments. And..." The Director’s voice softened. "Come home alive. All of you. Dismissed."

The room erupted into controlled chaos as teams broke off to prepare. Amara found herself swept along with her team toward the armory, Ethan’s hand finding hers in the crowd.

"Three hours," he murmured.

"Three hours," she echoed.
