The Five Evolution

Chapter 64: Sky Fall.

『"When we sky fall. We will stand tall, face it all..."』

The transport for team Delta rattled through turbulence at thirty thousand feet as it cut through the sky at terrifying speed, clouds whipping past the windows in a white blur.

Amara sat by the window with her cheek rested on her palm, staring out in silence. They were almost there.

"I still can’t believe it," Hiro said from across the cabin, trying to sound upbeat. "There used to be this amazing bakery in Koenji, Shigekuniya. Best melon-pan I’ve ever had in my life. I doubt it’s still standing... but man, I hope it—"

"Hiro," Sophia interrupted gently from beside him, her voice carefully neutral. "I doubt there’s anything still standing."

The moment the words left her mouth, Hiro’s excitement died. He looked down, suddenly remembering why they were here and the cabin grew quiet again.

Sophia stared at Hiro and suddenly felt guilty. "I didn’t mean it like that." She sighed. "Look, I can’t begin to imagine what this must feel like to you."

Hiro’s shoulders slumped, the light going out of his eyes as reality reasserted itself. "Oh. No, you’re right." He stared at his hands. "I keep forgetting. Or maybe I’m trying to forget. The city... it’s all... gone."

Nobody said anything for a moment, because what could you say to that?

"Approaching Tokyo airspace," the pilot’s voice crackled through the cabin speakers, breaking the silence. "Descending to an observable altitude. ETA five minutes."

"Finally," Raj muttered, shifting in his seat. He looked uncomfortable in the tight confines, his body barely fitting in the standard-issue harness.

The transport began its descent, everyone feeling the shift. Through the window, Amara watched as clouds gave way to open sky.

She pressed closer to the window. And the moment she saw it, every thought in her head simply stopped.

A massive, perfectly circular black crater dominated the landscape where Tokyo metropolis once stood. A gaping wound in the earth so enormous it looked unreal.

The city that had once held nearly fourteen million people, one of the largest metropolitan areas on Earth, was simply... gone.

Around the crater’s edge, emergency lighting had been set up, clustering around the perimeter. And in the darkness below, she could feel something waiting.

"Fucking hell," Sophia breathed, pressing her face against the window beside Amara. "I mean, it’s one thing watching this from a screen, but it’s another actually seeing it—"

She trailed off, because there weren’t words adequate for what they were looking at.

"Fourteen million people," Amara whispered, barely able to get the words out. "This was home to fourteen million people."

Yeah, sure, most of them had been evacuated before the Malice dropped down, according to the reports. But the keyword there was "most" not all. Never all.

Thousands had died in the initial event. More in the chaos afterward. An entire city with centuries of history, culture, and lives had been erased in a single night.

"There," Ethan said quietly, pointing toward a section of the crater’s edge. "That area—see where the emergency lights are concentrated? That’s Nakanoshima Station. Or what’s left of it. That’s our insertion point."

Raj leaned over to look, squinting. "How can you even tell? There’s nothing down there. It’s just... nothing."

"The maps," Ethan explained. "That cluster of lights marks what used to be the station entrance. There should be an access point to the underground tunnels somewhere around there."

Amara couldn’t look away from the crater. It was hypnotic in its wrongness, pulling at her attention like gravity.

Ethan’s hand found hers, lacing their fingers together with gentle pressure. The touch pulled her back from the edge of whatever psychological precipice she’d been standing on.

"That’s why we’re here," he said quietly, meant just for her, though the others could probably hear. "To make sure the people who survived have a chance to rebuild. To give them that opportunity."

He squeezed her hand. "And to make sure whatever’s still down there doesn’t spread somewhere else. Doesn’t do this to another city."

Amara took a moment, then squeezed back, drawing strength from the contact. "You’re right."

"I mean, I usually am. It’s a very attractive quality." Ethan grinned.

Despite what she was feeling, she smiled. "Humble too."

The transport began its final descent, circling toward the crater’s edge. Through the window, Amara watched emergency response vehicles gathered around the perimeter.

Institute forces, Japanese military, disaster relief operations, all coordinating in a massive effort to contain and eventually eliminate the threat.

They weren’t alone in this fight. Multiple of teams were deploying simultaneously to different zones around and beneath the crater. Three of which were headed by Meredith, Björn, and Ishigami.

But somehow, knowing that didn’t make the darkness look any less threatening. She could still feel something waiting for them down there.

"Beginning final approach," the pilot announced. "Prepare for insertion."

The atmosphere in the cabin shifted immediately as Awakeners began their final equipment checks.

"Five minutes to drop zone," the pilot called.

Through the window, Amara watched as they descended closer to the crater’s edge. The devastation becoming even more visceral at lower altitude.

Emergency lights were all around their insertion point, marking a relatively stable area near what had once been Nakanoshima Station.

Below that, extending down into darkness, were the tunnels they would be entering. Somewhere in that darkness, two hundred-plus spawn entities waited.

And somewhere deeper still, whatever they were converging toward.

"Two minutes."

The rear cargo door began opening, and wind howled into the cabin. Amara’s felt a chill run down her spine as she realized they weren’t landing normally.

"We’re jumping?" Hiro’s voice pitched higher.

"We’re jumping," Dante confirmed cheerfully, moving toward the open door. "It’s faster than finding a landing zone. Plus it looks cool, and style points matter."

"So this is how I die," Hiro muttered, staring at the open door. "Not to some spawn creature or ancient vampire or Apostle assassin. Just from jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft because Dante here thinks it looks cool!"

"We have equipment for this, right?" Sophia asked, standing but gripping her seat. "Parachutes? Jetpacks? Some kind of controlled descent mechanism?"

"We have first-aid kit if that helps," Yelena said, already at the door, completely unbothered by the howling wind.

"That’s not reassuring!" Hiro called over the wind, shaking his head.

"Lighten up, Hiro!" Raj bellowed with excitement, actually grinning as he unstrapped and moved toward the door. "Let’s fucking GO!"

"Yeah!" Sophia responded despite her earlier hesitation, she was psyching herself up now, feeding off Raj’s energy.

Her palm shot out and connected with his in a resounding dap-up that echoed through the cabin, even over the wind. "Let’s do this!"

Several other Awakeners glanced over at the sound, some smiling, others shaking their heads at the display.

"One minute!" the pilot announced. "All teams, stand by for jump!"

Maya stepped to the very edge of the door, her lantern already manifested and glowing bright in her hands.

"Remember your zones!" she called over the wind. "Stay in constant communication! Watch each other’s backs! And when things go sideways—"

"They always go sideways," Yelena interrupted.

Maya sighed. "Fine. When things inevitably go sideways... you lot adapt and survive. That’s the mission. That’s always the mission. Got it?"

"Got it!" they all said in unison.

"Thirty seconds!"

Amara’s heart was pounding and Ethan leaned in close, his hand finding hers one last time.

"You ready?" he asked, having to raise his voice to be heard over the wind.

"It’s a bit too late to be asking that question," she responded with a smile. "But yeah. I am."

"Twenty seconds!"

"WAAAAAHHHOOOOO!!!" Dante screamed euphorically before they’d even jumped, adrenaline already pumping.

"Ten seconds!"

The jump light turned green, bathing the cargo bay in emerald illumination.

Maya was the first out, lantern blazing as she simply stepped into open air and dropped like a falling star.

"GO GO GO!" someone shouted—might have been the pilot, might have been Dante, might have been everyone at once.

And so they jumped.

Amara fell toward Tokyo at terminal velocity. Wind screamed past her ears, making hearing difficult. She’d never felt so alive, yet so terrified.

Below them, the crater yawned wide like a mouth waiting to swallow them whole. And beneath that endless darkness, something awaited their arrival.
