Chapter 289
As Liu Qian spoke, the instrument had already started up.
Everyone’s eyes were fixed on the screen, and they listened with bated breath.
Several seconds passed. Aside from the sound of a normal heartbeat, there were no murmurs.
The line in the center of the screen showed only the slightest fluctuations, nothing like the huge, electrocardiogram-like waves they had seen before in the emergency department.
Another minute passed, and things remained largely the same.
Liu Qian smiled and turned off the instrument. "I can tell you with great certainty that the damage to Mr. Lin’s heart valve has been seventy percent healed!"
"Only seventy percent?" Lin Xiaoyue was excited, but also worried. After all, seventy percent still left another thirty percent to go for a full recovery. That remaining thirty percent felt like a ticking time bomb inside her uncle.
Mr. Lin saw her worry and offered a comforting smile. "It’s alright. I was just snatched back from death’s door, wasn’t I? As long as I’m alive, we can figure something else out down the road."
"Other ways?" Lin Xiaoyue’s eyes lit up. She suddenly grabbed Chenyang’s hand and asked, "Since you were able to heal seventy percent of it, you must have a way to cure him completely, right?"
Chenyang gave a teasing smile. "If you and the others hadn’t been constantly questioning and trying to stop me, not only would your uncle be fully cured by now, he’d probably be out grabbing skewers and a cold beer with you."
He was joking, but the brighter Chenyang’s smile, the more flushed and embarrassed Lin Xiaoyue and the others in the room became.
But she was in no mood to dwell on the sting of his mockery. Lin Xiaoyue pleaded, "I was wrong earlier. Please, help my uncle get fully healed."
Chenyang glanced at her, then held out his hand to Wang Lili. "Are the medicinal herbs I asked you to prepare ready?"
"They’re ready."
Wang Lili handed over a large bag of herbs she had retrieved from the pharmacy.
Chenyang took the bag and emptied its contents onto a nearby cabinet. As he began processing them, he ordered, "Bring in the wooden tub I had you prepare. Pour hot water into it. Remember, it must be hot water—the hotter, the better."
"Okay."
Wang Lili called over a few other nurses, and they hurried to comply.
Meanwhile, the other patients’ family members, looking embarrassed and ashamed, all brought out the hot water they had just fetched.
"What’s the hot water for?" Liu Qian asked.
"For Mr. Lin to take a bath."
"Huh? If he gets in water that hot, won’t he be cooked alive?"
"Do I look like someone who wants to murder Mr. Lin?" Chenyang retorted playfully.
Liu Qian shook her head and frowned. "Of course you don’t, but..."
Before she could finish, Chenyang explained, "We’re going to add cold water, obviously. But first, we need to steep the herbs."
As he spoke, Chenyang tossed the large pile of processed herbs into the wooden tub.
Once he saw the water turn a greenish-yellow, he said, "Alright, add the cold water. Not too much. Make sure the temperature stays above forty-five degrees."
"Okay."
While everyone was busy, Chenyang turned to the hospital bed. "Mr. Lin, once the water temperature is adjusted, I want you to soak for twenty minutes. Then, get out and rest for ten. During your rest, you can have a snack, and it would be best to have a little something to drink. Once you’re nice and buzzed, get back in for another twenty minutes. After that second soak, I guarantee you’ll be ninety percent recovered. As for the remaining ten percent, that will require some medicine."
"I understand the part about taking medicine. You can’t get better if you’re sick without it. But this drinking part... I don’t get it. My whole life, whether I was the patient or I was with a family member at the doctor’s, the most common advice was always ’no alcohol, and cut back on spicy food.’ Why are you actually encouraging me to drink?"
"Alcohol is the spirit of the grain. A small amount can invigorate blood flow, break up stasis, and increase circulation. It will have a beneficial effect on your condition."
"Is this what people mean when they say, ’Alcohol is the spirit of the grain; the more you drink, the younger you get’?"
"Something like that. Drinking won’t make you younger, but there’s no doubt that drinking the right way can improve your state of mind."
"Ah, the traditional Chinese medicine passed down from our ancestors is really something else. Not only does it cure what ails you, but it also gives me a legitimate excuse to indulge my craving for a drink."
Mr. Lin laughed heartily, then turned his head. "Xiaoyue, it’s been a long time since you bought your uncle a drink. Today, the doctor himself is telling me to drink, so don’t be stingy. You have to get me a bottle of the good stuff."
"Fine, I’ll let you make an exception just this once. I’ll go buy it for you now."
Lin Xiaoyue gave a resigned smile, then asked Chenyang, "Besides the alcohol, is there anything else you need?"
"Food to go with it! You can’t drink without something to eat."
"Hahaha, now that’s what I like to hear, Doctor Chen. Get a whole roast chicken, some peanuts... and make sure you buy plenty! I want to raise a few glasses to Doctor Chen to thank him for saving my life."
