Chapter 291
"It is. And it has everything to do with it."
Chenyang leaned against the window and lit a cigarette, slowly puffing on it as he explained, "After the car crash, Lin Jiji and Lin Xiaoyue were trapped in the same area.
At that time, even though Lin Jiji was the one who called me over, I chose to save Lin Xiaoyue first because her injuries were more serious than his.
But that act really pissed him off. Later, while Angie and I were rescuing Lin Xiaoyue, he first revealed his identity and threatened us, then tried to bribe us. When he saw we weren’t taking the bait, he started hurling all sorts of ugly insults.
Even so, as a doctor, I couldn’t just leave him to die, so I eventually moved the car frame pinning his legs and pulled him out."
Liu Qian frowned. "The version of the story online is completely different."
Chenyang asked curiously, "What are they saying about me online?"
"They’ve leveled three major accusations against you online. First, that you’re an unethical doctor with no conscience. Second, that you’re a shameless lecher who will abandon anyone for a pretty face. Third, that you’re cold-blooded and heartless, with a complete disregard for human life!
The posts with the most shares and likes all say that during the rescue, you only cared about money and pretty women.
If it was a man, you wouldn’t save them unless they paid. They say you wouldn’t even give them a second glance, even if they were on their knees begging you, and that two people died because of it.
On top of that, they say you were looking for any excuse to take advantage of the beautiful women there. That whenever you saw a pretty face, you’d completely ignore the other victims, and that Lin Jiji was one of those victims you snubbed for a beauty.
The post that went viral earlier was basically about how Lin Jiji and an uninjured pretty woman were trapped in the same area. It said that when you got there, you completely ignored him, no matter how much he pleaded,
and instead went straight for the woman. And even though she clearly wasn’t hurt, you allegedly used ’giving her a checkup’ as an excuse to grope her all over."
With the cigarette dangling from his lips, Chenyang asked, "What do you believe? My story, or the one online?"
"The online version, of course," Liu Qian said with a teasing smile. "After all, you really are a pervert. Otherwise, why would you have almost slept with me the very first time we met?"
Chenyang’s face darkened. "You were the one who almost slept with me, okay?! You were the one crying and begging me to show you what kissing felt like."
"Keep your voice down! If anyone hears you, they’ll think I’m some kind of vixen!"
"Aren’t you?"
"I... I’m not a vixen, I was just curious! Besides, if you weren’t such a lech yourself, you never would have helped me, even if I got on my knees and begged, right?"
Knowing she was on shaky ground, Liu Qian quickly changed the subject. "When I went to the ER, Liu Yun and Angie told me what happened at the crash site.
Angie especially. That girl was so worked up, she swore on her family’s lives that you absolutely didn’t take advantage of any women or accept bribes from anyone. So, naturally, I don’t believe any of those online rumors."
Chenyang stuck his hand out the window and flicked his ash. "I’ve gone over everything that happened in my head. Based on the way the public narrative is being shaped, all those trending topics and posts... it must all be Lin Jiji’s doing.
The reason he’s doing this is twofold: first, because I ignored him to save Lin Xiaoyue, and second, because when he started insulting me, I insulted him right back.
When you get right down to it, the root of the conflict between us is Lin Xiaoyue."
"So you want to ask Lin Xiaoyue to come forward as a witness and explain what really happened. Once she does, the rumors will fall apart on their own, right?"
"Exactly."
"That’s definitely the best and most direct solution," Liu Qian said with a smile. "Wait for her to get back later, then go talk to her about it. I’m sure she’ll help."
Chenyang shook his head. "I’m afraid she might not."
"Why not?" Liu Qian asked, surprised. "You saved her at the crash, and you just saved her uncle here a minute ago.
And while saving them is just part of your job as a doctor, from their perspective, they owe you a huge debt of gratitude.
After all that, she has to stand up for you and help clear your name. It’s the right thing to do!"
