Chapter 69 - 68: Immortality? More Important Than My Official Post?

"No rush. The hostages are currently unharmed." Yvonne Lowell looked at the cars approaching in the distance and patted Theodore Zane.

"Blaze, go get the person in charge of negotiations. We’re going to talk to Country X about our payment first."

Theodore Zane couldn’t stop his lips from twitching. "Alright... Senior Inferno!"

"Get lost!" Yvonne Lowell snapped, giving him a light kick.

...

A moment later, a black, bulletproof car, flanked by six armored vehicles, pulled over on the side of the road not far away.

Yvonne Lowell watched with cold eyes as the old geezer swaggered out of the car, escorted by several people.

She watched with cold eyes as he postured, accepting the salutes of others. Watched with cold eyes as he slowly, leisurely ambled over.

Cold eyes... No, she couldn’t keep her cool. She roared at him,

"Would it kill you to walk a little fucking faster?!"

Everyone was stunned by her shout, thinking she was yelling at one of her own people, and they exchanged bewildered glances.

But then they saw the old geezer pick up his pace, jogging the rest of the way over.

"Hey now, no need to be so fierce! I rushed over, didn’t I?" Reed said, panting as he wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"Oh, you came by car? And here I thought you’d walked," Yvonne Lowell said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"I really am busy. I have to negotiate with all sides, but I’ve been keeping an eye on the situation here. Speaking of which, how did you end up coming with them?" Reed said with a pained smile.

Consultant Cole was diligently translating for everyone. Hearing the exchange between Yvonne Lowell and Reed, the expressions under everyone’s masks grew a little strange.

’We’ve never met Reed in person, but in videos, he always acts so damn tough. Why is he acting like a kid brother in front of her?!’

Yvonne Lowell shot him a sidelong glance. "Mind your own business. I heard you want Aurelia to help you rescue all the hostages? Let’s talk terms."

"Uh... aren’t our two countries on friendly terms? Do we really need to talk about that?" Reed pouted.

"Aurelia has an old saying: ’Play with fire, and you’ll wet the bed.’" Yvonne Lowell jutted her chin in Theodore Zane’s direction.

"Aurelia sent only one superpower user this time, a Fire Element user at that, which you don’t have. The man is risking wetting his bed to come save your people. And you’re not going to pay a single cent? Does that sound right to you?"

When Theodore Zane heard Consultant Cole’s translation, he was so angry he looked ready to jump up and down. He was about to charge forward and argue, but his teammates held him back.

He threw in the towel. "Go on, laugh if you want to. I know you’re all struggling to hold it in."

"Vice-captain, it’s not that we don’t want to laugh. We can’t," said Teammate A, clenching his jaw.

"Yeah! We have to maintain discipline! We can’t tarnish our country’s image!" Teammate B added.

Reed looked a little awkward and pointed toward the negotiators. "In that case, I’ll talk with them later, how about that?"

"Tsk. Fine. But if you dare go back on your word..." Yvonne Lowell said, leisurely kicking at a stone on the ground.

"Oh, for heaven’s sake, ancestor, you’ve personally stepped in. How could I dare go back on my word? I promise, I will absolutely give them a satisfactory offer, alright?" Reed repeatedly assured her.

"Fine. You want them dead or alive?" Yvonne Lowell asked, raising an eyebrow.

A vicious glint flashed in Reed’s eyes. "Either. It doesn’t matter."

’These people are a constant threat to public safety. Why should I be courteous to them?’

The only one who could make him act like a tame cat was probably Yvonne Lowell.

Yvonne Lowell looked at the negotiators beside her. "Ask for whatever you want. If you’re not satisfied with the final price he offers, come and tell me."

"Yes, yes!"

The negotiators’ eyes lit up. After so many years stationed abroad, they never thought they’d see the day they could fleece Reed!

...

After putting Reed in his place, Yvonne Lowell walked over to the Anomalous Abilities Unit. "Prepare for action. We’re sticking to the original plan."

"Yes, ma’am!" everyone responded, quickly checking their gear, ready to move.

Five minutes later, the eleven of them sprinted with lightning speed toward the rooftop of the building next to the restaurant.

Blake Paxton used his Space Ability to tear open a rift, and the team crossed over to the opposite rooftop one by one.

But thanks to Yvonne Lowell’s manipulation, what outsiders saw was the team using Flying Tiger Claws to swing across.

The ice crystals on the iron door gradually melted under the heat from Theodore Zane.

"Boss, it’s showtime!"

Stanley Sutton placed his hand on the door. A moment later, the iron door began to warp, and in a flash, it was torn from its hinges.

The team crept silently down to the second floor, where they saw three men still lost in their drunken revelry.

"Move!" Yvonne Lowell said in a low voice, having already soundproofed the second floor.

The Fire Ability in Theodore Zane’s hands flared out, instantly setting two of the men on the second floor ablaze.

Excruciating pain assailed them, and they couldn’t stop themselves from letting out bloodcurdling screams.

"Asby, what are you gaping at?! Hurry up and save us!!"

One of them, fighting through the pain, ordered the man who had quickly dodged aside.

Asby. The Ice Ability User.

The moment he’d sensed something was wrong, he had immediately rolled to the side.

Snapping back to his senses, he instantly mobilized his Ice Ability, enveloping the two sub-bosses.

The burning, stinging pain on their bodies was slightly relieved, and the sub-bosses immediately scrambled to the side.

"Quick! Kill them!" a sub-boss stammered, pointing a trembling finger at the group across from them.

A roguish smile touched Theodore Zane’s lips as he launched a fireball straight at Asby’s face.

Asby quickly formed an ice spike to block the fireball.

Ice and fire collided. The area around the two was instantly filled with billowing steam as they traded blows.

Meanwhile, the two sub-bosses didn’t even have time to pull out their guns before Stanley Sutton used the surrounding metal knives and forks to viciously impale them.

Two steak knives, in particular, plunged directly into their carotid arteries, and the two men fell silent instantly.

Yvonne Lowell glanced at him from the corner of her eye but said nothing.

Sensing her gaze, Stanley Sutton gave a light cough to cover his awkwardness. "They moved. I wasn’t originally aiming for there."

Theodore Zane’s attacks grew more and more ferocious, far beyond what an A-ranker like Asby could handle.

Asby could no longer use his superpower, and his body was already covered in numerous burns.

But even so, he didn’t forget to try and recruit Theodore Zane.

"You’re very strong. Why not consider joining us? As long as you complete God’s instructions, you can obtain eternal life."

"Tsk. Eternal life my ass. You think I’m a kid? I’d have to be an idiot to give up my government post to go be crazy with you psychos," Theodore Zane said, rolling his eyes.

He directly ramped up his superpower. The flames pierced through Asby’s layer of ice and engulfed him.

Asby let out a hoarse, final scream, and a moment later, fell silent.

The layer of ice that had enveloped him melted into blackish-red, bloody water, and his entire body was turned into a piece of char.

...

With the superpower user taken care of, the seven people downstairs were much easier to deal with.

No one even used their superpowers. Before the enemy could react, they killed all seven in a few swift moves.

Seeing her parents safe and sound, the great weight in Yvonne Lowell’s heart was finally lifted.

Just as she was about to turn and leave, one of the men who had been knocked to the ground fired a shot in Wendy Sutton’s direction.
