Chapter 68 - 67: One Fire Attack Is All It Takes to Take Them Down
The flight from Kingsland to Country X took eight hours.
After boarding the plane, everyone closed their eyes to rest, taking the opportunity to conserve their energy.
With an hour left before landing, Yvonne Lowell saw that everyone was awake, so she got up and sat down beside them.
She spoke abruptly. "Fill me in on the details."
The team was stunned for a moment. Once they recovered, they pushed Stanley Sutton forward.
Stanley Sutton cleared his throat. "Local time, around eight o’clock last night, ten individuals stormed a restaurant."
"They took twenty-nine people hostage, including six tourists from our own country, Aurelia."
The man with glasses, Blake Paxton, added, "Negotiations were attempted, but with little effect. Additionally, our intelligence indicates there’s an Ice Ability User on their team. Their power level is unknown."
The hot-tempered Theodore Zane slammed his hand on the table. "Just some damn Ice Ability User? I’ll just go in and—"
Noticing Yvonne Lowell’s gaze, his voice trailed off. "Ahem, all it would take is one blast of fire from you, Senior, and they’d be down for the count!"
"Cut the crap. What’s the status of the six tourists?"
As she said this, Yvonne Lowell’s fingers unconsciously clenched into a tight fist.
Stanley Sutton closed his eyes briefly. "They are a middle-aged couple and a family of four. For now, there have been no fatalities, but the number of injured is unknown."
Blake Paxton glanced at Stanley Sutton and pursed his lips. "That middle-aged couple... they’re our captain’s aunt and uncle."
"Don’t worry, Chief! We guarantee we’ll get our aunt and uncle out without a single scratch!"
"Yeah, Captain!"
"You can count on us, Captain!"
"Country X only has three superpower users, and their abilities are all pretty useless. The enemy’s Ice Ability User has every one of them completely suppressed."
Stanley Sutton’s mood grew heavy. "So, they’re hoping we can rescue all the hostages if possible."
Theodore Zane’s eyes filled with disdain. "Tch, on what grounds? They show no sincerity, and they expect me to risk my life for them?!"
Yvonne Lowell glanced at the others and saw that while they remained silent, their expressions conveyed the same sentiment.
’Hah, so this is what he meant when he said everyone in the Anomalous Abilities Unit is a troublemaker.’
’If not for her cousin and Blake Paxton acting as mediators, they’d probably all roll up their sleeves and jump straight into a fight, wouldn’t they?’
’Still, she kind of liked this type of personality.’
"That’s something for them to negotiate later. Our primary mission is to save people," Stanley Sutton said, rubbing his aching temples.
"We’re definitely saving people, but saving the six is our mission. The other twenty-three... well, that comes at a different price," Theodore Zane said nonchalantly, crossing his legs.
"Exactly. What if they go back on their word?"
Yvonne Lowell took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. "All right. Get ready. We’re about to arrive."
...
The Anomalous Abilities Unit is a clandestine organization. None of its members can reveal their true identities in public.
So, everyone put on their tactical masks, concealing their faces to disguise themselves as ordinary Japyrian personnel.
After disembarking, they immediately rendezvoused with their consultant stationed abroad.
As the consultant was discussing the plan with the Anomalous Abilities Unit, he caught sight of Yvonne Lowell standing off to the side, looking distracted and gazing around. He was a little displeased.
"What’s with that team member?"
Stanley Sutton glanced at her. "Don’t worry about her. We can handle the discussion."
The consultant was about to say more, but Theodore Zane interrupted him.
"Consultant Cole, the ten of us are the ones on the mission. That senior is our super-powered backup, invited here just to cover our asses. She’s top-notch." As he spoke, Theodore Zane gave a thumbs-up.
Hearing this from Theodore Zane, the consultant, though still a bit skeptical, didn’t press the matter.
...
Meanwhile, Yvonne Lowell was using her superpower to assess the situation inside the restaurant.
It was a two-and-a-half-story Western-style building. The door to the rooftop was frozen solid.
Three individuals who looked like ringleaders were eating and drinking on the second floor, while the rest were gathered with the hostages in the first-floor lobby.
Seeing that no one was seriously injured and that her parents were huddled unharmed in a corner, Yvonne Lowell felt a small sense of relief.
She looked toward the Country X authorities but didn’t see the person she was looking for, a hint of impatience in her eyes.
She pulled out her phone and made a call. "Where the hell are you?"
"I called you ten hours ago, and I’m already fucking here. You’re telling me you’re still on the way? You could have crawled here by now! Are you messing with me?!"
Yvonne Lowell was so angry she couldn’t stop her voice from rising.
"I’m giving you ten minutes. If I don’t see you by then, you... are... so... screwed!"
With that, she hung up.
...
Suppressing her fury, she turned and found the entire team staring at her, transfixed.
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "Are you done talking?"
"Uh, not... not yet." Theodore Zane swallowed hard. "Senior, who were you on the phone with? Why were you so angry?"
"You understand the language of Country X?"
"Nah, I don’t. I could just tell you were really mad. But Consultant Cole and Specs can understand it, hehe," Theodore Zane said with a grin.
"You’ll find out in a bit." Yvonne Lowell walked over to them. "So, where were we?"
Stanley Sutton cleared his throat. "We’re considering the issue of exposure. Although the media and public have been dispersed, the people inside will inevitably witness our actions during the rescue."
"That’s right. With twenty-nine people, even using hypnosis would be a massive undertaking. Besides, there are very few hypnotists in the world capable of completely erasing or altering memories," Consultant Cole agreed.
"Here’s my suggestion: don’t reveal your identities to the Country X side either. For this trip, he’s the only superpower user," Yvonne Lowell said, pointing at Theodore Zane.
"As for those people... no need for all that trouble. Just gather all twenty-nine of them, and I can handle it myself."
Everyone was completely baffled.
Only Blake Paxton had a flash of insight. In disbelief, he asked, "Senior! Don’t tell me you’re also a Spiritual Ability User?!"
"Huh? Aren’t you Fire Element?" Stanley Sutton asked, surprised.
Yvonne Lowell shrugged innocently. "When did I ever say I only have one superpower? If that were the case, would you have needed to hire me to be your safety net?"
Everyone was dumbfounded, finding it utterly incredible.
Theodore Zane’s eyes went wide as he muttered to himself, "Mama, I’ve seen a living Spiritual Ability User... and she’s a dual-system..."
"Tch. Otherwise, how do you think I saw what your superpower was?" Yvonne Lowell shot him a look.
"I just thought... you had read our files beforehand," Theodore Zane said, a little embarrassed.
"That’s wonderful! When can we move in?" Consultant Cole asked, his confidence renewed.
