Chapter 80 - 79: He Pulled It Off Again
Yvonne Lowell’s temple throbbed as she stared at the staircase, completely blocked by a pile of cardboard boxes and shopping bags. She roared at the floor above,
"Nina Jennings, are you out of your goddamn mind?! Why are you dumping all this junk in my house?!"
Nina Jennings poked her head out of the kitchen. "Hey, I just got back, you know? I’ll clean it up in a bit. Let me catch my breath and have a drink of water first, I’m about to die of exhaustion."
Yvonne Lowell precariously navigated through the clutter, where there was barely any room to step. She casually opened a bag and found... books?
*The Secret to a Successful Relationship*?
*The 36 Stratagems for a Woman Chasing a Man*?
*How to Make the One You Love Fall in Love with You*?
*Developing Superb Techniques for a Woman to Chase a Man*?
*The Ultimate Guide to Finding a Partner*?
*How to Make That Guy Fall Head Over Heels for You*?
And what’s this one? *Men, Your Doom Has Arrived: There’s No Escaping Me*??????
...
’What is all this junk? Good lord, and there’s more than one bag of it??’
’This stack must weigh, what, fifteen or twenty pounds???’
Nina Jennings walked out of the kitchen and handed her a bottle of orange juice. "If you’re interested, feel free to take a couple. They might add a little spice to your relationship with your President Grant."
"No, thanks. I’ll pass," Yvonne Lowell said, taking a sip of orange juice to hide the frantic twitching at the corner of her mouth.
The look on Nina Jennings’s face screamed, ’You ungrateful brat!’
"These are all strategy guides with sky-high ratings online! It took me forever to find all of them at the bookstore."
"Heh, save them for Silas Lynch," Yvonne Lowell said, jutting her chin toward the other items. "What’s all that?"
"The bags are my spoils from today’s shopping spree. The boxes were just delivered this afternoon."
Nina Jennings opened one of the cardboard boxes, motioning for her to look inside.
"I might be staying in Kingsland to chase a man, but I can’t let my career fall behind, right? So I had them send over some medicinal herbs and a few precision instruments that the lab here was missing."
Nina Jennings had a small lab in her own villa, fully equipped with all the common instruments. It was just a few of the more expensive, delicate pieces that hadn’t been installed at the time.
After all, with this kind of equipment, newer and more precise models are bound to be released before you know it.
It would be a waste to install it and not use it, only to have to buy a new one later.
They might have a lot of money, but they weren’t foolish enough to just throw it around for fun.
Yvonne Lowell’s expression was hard to read. "So... why didn’t you just have them move it all to your place directly?"
Nina Jennings slapped her forehead as if in a sudden epiphany. "Oh, right! Why didn’t I think of that?! I just opened the door without thinking and let them bring it all in."
"Well, don’t expect any help from me. I’m just a delicate, fragile patient who can’t even stand a gust of wind. I can’t move a single thing," Yvonne Lowell said with a shrug, plopping down on the sofa.
"No big deal. Sid and your President Grant should be back soon. I’ll ask him for help when he gets here. He’ll take pity on a damsel in distress, right?"
Nina Jennings closed the box and turned her head, only to see a knowing, half-smile on Yvonne Lowell’s face. A chill ran down her spine.
"What’s with that weird look? Never seen a beautiful woman before?"
"You planned this from the start, didn’t you? Have it delivered to my place, then get Silas Lynch to come and help you."
Yvonne had hit the nail on the head. Nina Jennings could only try to cover her guilt by raising her voice. "Of course not! I really forgot! How could I be that kind of person?! If Angus wasn’t away, I wouldn’t have to bother him, you know?!"
"Alright, stop acting. As if I don’t know exactly how you operate. When you lift your tail, I know whether you’re about to shit or fart."
Nina Jennings shot her a disgusted look. "All day long it’s just talk of shit and farts with you. So vulgar! So crude! Utterly unrefined! But so what if I planned it? You’d better not blow my cover, or I’ll beat you up!"
"I don’t have time for that." Yvonne Lowell finished the last of her orange juice and stood up. "I’ve heard of heavenly thunder striking earthly fire, but I’ve never seen the earthly fire actively go looking for the thunder."
"What does that mean?" Nina Jennings paused for a second before it clicked. "Are you saying Sid is a Thunder Element superpower user?"
"I’m hungry. I’m going over to see when dinner is," Yvonne Lowell said, heading for the door.
Nina Jennings hurried after her, carefully avoiding her injury as she slung an arm around her shoulder. "Hey, what about your guy? Is he a superpower user too?"
Yvonne Lowell didn’t speak, just gave a slight nod.
"No way, girl! So what element is he?"
Yvonne Lowell glanced at her. "You want to know?"
"YES YES YES YES YES!!!" Nina Jennings nodded furiously.
"Go ask him yourself. See? He’s back," Yvonne Lowell said, tilting her chin toward the Maybach that was just pulling into the driveway across the street.
"Tch, as if I’d ask him. Fine, don’t tell me. So stingy! I’m sure I’ll get a chance to see for myself eventually!"
...
The moment Leo Grant got out of the car, he saw his Little Marshmallow walking toward him, ’held hostage’ with an arm locked around her neck.
His gaze darkened. He shot a look at Silas Lynch, who was half a step behind him. ’Completely useless.’
Silas Lynch: ’?????? What was that look for?! I swear I haven’t done anything to provoke him today!!!’
Leo Grant strode quickly over to them, took Yvonne Lowell’s hand, and gently brushed the arm off her shoulder.
Nina Jennings didn’t react at first, frozen in place.
By the time she snapped out of it, she saw that Leo Grant was already leading Yvonne Lowell inside. She hurried to catch up.
"Hey, no offense, President Grant, but am I not even allowed to put an arm around her shoulder now???"
"Her shoulder is still injured and can’t bear any weight. You were moving so roughly just now, you could have easily reopened her wound," Leo Grant said calmly, his expression unchanged.
’An arm around her shoulder... Actually, that wasn’t okay either.’
Nina Jennings: ’They’re not even officially together and he’s already like this?? What’s he going to be like when they actually start dating?!’
’Did he just imply my arm was heavy? And I’m studying medicine! Does he really think I don’t know how to be gentle?!’
’And also, he totally knocked my arm away, right? He did, right? That’s the one moment you can actually see his supposed fear of women. Heh.’
"Tch, who needs you guys! I’m going to find my Sid. I won’t be your third wheel," Nina Jennings said, rolling her eyes at them before walking toward Silas Lynch.
Yvonne Lowell was amused. ’How can he be jealous of another woman? He only knows how to act tough with me. I’ve never seen him dare to act this way in front of his own brother.’
She squeezed his palm. "Why did you have to go and provoke her for no reason?"
Leo Grant pressed his lips together, his head drooping slightly. "I was just afraid she’d put pressure on your wound. She’s not exactly gentle."
’Great, he’s putting on an act again. Such a manipulative schemer.’
"Okay, okay. In that case, thank you, my thoughtful Comrade Grant," Yvonne Lowell could only play along and soothe his ego.
A certain someone’s tail was now visibly wagging, and even the corners of his eyes lifted in a slight smile. "You’re welcome. It was my pleasure."
"Then let me ask my thoughtful Comrade Grant, has the food arrived yet? I’m hungry."
Leo Grant glanced at the time. "Almost. It should be here in about ten minutes. There’s milk in the fridge. Want some to tide you over?"
"No thanks, I just finished a bottle of orange juice after I woke up. I’ll just wait, it’s almost here anyway."
Leo Grant didn’t reply, but ’I should stock up on some filling and healthy snacks for the house,’ he thought to himself.
Catching something in her peripheral vision, Yvonne Lowell’s lips curved into a teasing smile.
