The residual echo hit three cycles later, stronger than before and no longer confined to any secondary corridor.
Ryn was mid-session in residual-insight consultancy when the second current tore open.
She had been walking a residual-limited operator through a standard residual-exposure coupling sequence, voice steady, residual signature held in the thin safe band. The operator’s residual profile sat quiet on the board. Then the cascade started without warning.
It was not a low-amplitude coupling on residual-exposure traffic. It was a residual collapse inside the Lattice itself. The failure began in residual-limited recovery space and spread outward into residual-class coverage windows.
In the echo Ryn saw Soren go down first. The lag did not stay under threshold. It flipped his residual profile completely, hard and fast.
She cut the consultancy session. The operator’s residual signature spiked in confusion; she left him with a curt hold order and moved.
Recovery space was already lit when she arrived. Soren stood near the center console, residual lag climbing across his displayed profile. He had felt the same cascade.
"That wasn’t residual-exposure," he said. "That was us. The residual weather is starting to price the unlogged residual-insight we spent. It’s coming back as residual-class instability."
Ryn checked the residual-system health indicators. Secondary corridors showed early stress. Residual-limited recovery space was already drawing hard.
"If we wait for residual-medical clearance or residual-system review, the cascade in the echo already lands," she said. "You go first."
"Then we don’t wait."

Soren went to his knees in the middle of recovery space. Ryn caught him under the arms and lowered him. The resonance channel was still open between them.

She did not offer help. She turned and left. The residual-medical staff did not look up.

Atlas did not answer on the channel.
Callen continued. "I want residual-limited residual-insight locked to residual-medical clearance only until the six-cycle review. No more unlogged residual-attention channels."
Atlas still did not answer. He left his station and went to residual-medical in person.
Ryn was still there when he entered. Her residual signature was ragged from the resonance contact. Soren lay quiet on the recovery frame, residual lag still heavy. Residual-medical staff stepped back the moment Atlas crossed the threshold.
He was not supposed to walk into residual-medical space during an active residual-profile recovery. No residual-accounting directive authorized it.
Atlas stopped at the foot of the frame and looked at the residual-medical observer.
"Status."
The observer answered without delay. "Residual lag crossed hard threshold. Residual profile partially flipped and was pulled back.

Atlas looked at Soren, then at Ryn.
"You saw a residual cascade that residual-system health indicators had not logged yet. You used the resonance to move it. Residual-buffer paid. Residual-limited residual capacity paid. Residual-exposure bodies did not."
He waited.
"Is that accurate?"
Ryn did not look away. "Yes."
Soren’s voice came rough from the frame. "The residual weather was going to price residual-class instability whether we moved it or not. We chose where the residual cost landed."
Atlas was silent for a long moment. Residual-medical staff stayed clear. The residual-system health indicators continued their slow update cycle in the background.
Then Atlas did something no residual-accounting directive had authorized.
He overrode residual-medical suspension for one residual-limited operator only—Ryn—and placed both residual-limited residual-insight under his direct residual-system authority until the six-cycle review.
Not residual-medical clearance. Not residual-class coverage windows. Atlas’s personal residual-system authority.
"Residual-insight that residual-accounting cannot see is residual-system risk," Atlas said. "I am making it residual-system responsibility instead. Residual-medical keeps residual-lag thresholds.

He looked at both of them. "If the residual weather collects again, it collects against me."
The override logged. Residual-system authority markers updated across the Lattice.
Callen was already on channel the moment the override appeared.
"You just made residual-class residual-insight residual-system policy without residual-system review," Callen said.
"Secondary residual-buffer capacity is not residual-system personal authority."
Atlas answered without turning from the recovery frame. "Residual-buffer capacity is already being spent by residual events residual-accounting cannot see. I am only naming the residual cost that is already moving.
Six-cycle review will decide whether residual-system authority was the correct residual-accounting response. Until then, the residual-insight stays visible to me."
He left residual-medical the same way he had entered—without further comment.
Ryn and Soren were left in the quiet that followed. Residual-medical staff resumed their work, slower now. The resonance channel remained open between Ryn and Soren. It still carried the residual cascade they had moved and the residual capacity Soren had lost.
It also carried something new: Atlas’s residual signature sitting over residual-limited residual-insight like a temporary shield that was also a target.
Soren spoke quietly. "He just made himself the residual margin."
Ryn watched the residual-system health indicators settle into their new pattern.

The residual load had not been eliminated.
It had been given a name and a face.
The six-cycle clock was still running.
