Chapter 129: The Loving Sister (1)
Sirens approached from the distance.
Red and blue lights reflected across the damaged vehicles and scattered glass covering the highway.
Several minutes later...
Police cruisers blocked off the surrounding lanes.
Paramedics hurried toward Shen Tian.
"Sir, please remain seated."
One of them crouched in front of him.
"We need to check you for injuries."
Shen Tian sighed. "I already told everyone that I’m fine."
"After a collision like that, adrenaline can hide serious symptoms."
The paramedic shone a small light into his eyes.
"Any dizziness?"
"No."
"Nausea?"
"No."
"Headache?"
"No."
"Pain anywhere?"
"No."
The paramedic looked toward the destroyed car.
Then back at Shen Tian.
"...You were inside that?"
"Yes."
"And you have no pain?"
"That’s what I’ve been saying."
Nearby... Shen Yan stood completely still.
Her eyes carefully observed every movement the paramedics made.
When one of them touched Shen Tian’s shoulder...
Her eyes narrowed.
The paramedic suddenly felt a chill crawl down his back.
He slowly looked over.
Shen Yan immediately smiled.
It wasn’t a warm smile.
"Be gentle."
The paramedic swallowed.
"...Of course."
Shen Tian glanced toward her.
"Big Sis."
The moment he looked at her...
The coldness vanished.
She hurried closer and crouched beside him.
"Little Tian, are you sure you don’t feel anything?"
"I’m sure."
"Even a small amount of discomfort?"
"No."
"What about your neck?"
"It’s fine."
"Your back?"
"Fine."
"Your ribs?"
"Also fine."
Shen Yan stared at him closely.
Shen Tian smiled helplessly.
"I’m not hiding anything."
She remained silent for several seconds.
Then she gently placed both hands around his face.
"You really, really promise?"
"I promise."
Only then did her shoulders relax slightly.
A police officer approached.
"Mr. Shen?"
Shen Tian looked up.
"Yes."
"I’m the leading Officer. We’ll need a statement from you regarding what happened."
Shen Tian nodded.
"The other vehicle deliberately rammed us."
The leading officer’s expression became serious.
"You’re certain it was intentional?"
"It accelerated directly into my driver’s side. It didn’t attempt to brake."
The leading officer glanced toward the wreckage.
"We found a firearm near the driver. He exited the vehicle carrying it?"
"Yes," Shen Tian responded.
The leading officer looked toward the motionless attacker.
Then toward Shen Yan.
"Your sister stopped him?"
Shen Tian followed his gaze.
"...She did."
The leading officer carefully looked at Shen Yan.
She smiled politely.
"He threatened my brother."
Her voice was soft. Almost pleasant.
"I reacted."
The leading officer looked back at the attacker.
Then at the crushed handgun lying several meters away.
"...I see."
He clearly did not see.
But he also clearly had no desire to question her too aggressively.
"We’ll need both of you to remain here while we secure the scene."
Shen Yan nodded.
"Of course."
She stepped back.
Her pleasant smile remained until the leading officer walked away.
Then... It disappeared.
Her gaze shifted toward the large truck.
The remaining attackers had fled.
But they had left traces behind.
Blood on the seats.
Fingerprints.
A damaged radio.
A discarded knife.
Shen Yan could work with this.
Xu Ning appeared beside Shen Tian.
[Host.]
[Three surviving attackers fled east from the highway.]
[Traffic cameras lost them near an industrial district.]
Shen Tian’s eyes narrowed.
’Can you continue tracking them?’
[Yes.]
[But your sister appears to have already noticed the same escape route.]
Shen Tian looked toward Shen Yan.
She was still watching the wreckage.
Her face was calm. Too calm.
"Big Sis," Shen Tian called out.
Shen Yan immediately turned toward him.
"Yes, little Tian?"
"Don’t do anything reckless."
She smiled lovingly.
"I would never."
Xu Ning tilted her head.
[Host.]
[Her heart rate did not change when she said that.]
’Meaning?’
[She was lying without hesitation.]
Shen Tian sighed inwardly.
After the police finished taking their preliminary statements...
One of the officers arranged for a private vehicle to take Shen Tian away from the highway.
Shen Yan remained beside him until the very last moment.
She checked the vehicle herself.
The tires.
The windows.
The driver.
The route.
Even the rear storage compartment.
The driver stood awkwardly beside the car.
"...Miss, I promise I’m only here to take him home."
Shen Yan stared at him.
"Keep both hands visible."
"...Yes, ma’am."
"Don’t deviate from the route."
"I won’t."
"Don’t drive recklessly."
"Of course not."
"If anything happens to him..."
The driver went pale.
Shen Tian interrupted.
"Big Sis."
She turned around.
Her expression instantly softened.
"I’ll be careful, Little Tian."
"You’re not coming?"
Shen Yan looked toward the police officers examining the attackers’ vehicle.
"I need to answer a few additional questions."
Shen Tian studied her.
"...That’s all?"
She smiled.
"That’s all."
He knew better.
But he also knew stopping her directly would only make her more determined.
"Come home soon."
The words struck her more deeply than any command could have.
Her eyes softened.
"I will."
She leaned into the vehicle and hugged him tightly.
For several seconds... She refused to let go.
Then she gently kissed his forehead.
"Wait for me."
"I will."
The door closed. The car slowly pulled away.
Shen Yan stood beside the highway, watching until the vehicle disappeared completely.
Her loving smile remained.
Five seconds passed.
Ten.
Twenty.
Once Shen Tian was truly gone...
Her expression became empty.
She slowly turned around.
The temperature around her seemed to drop.
The nearby officers instinctively moved away without understanding why.
Shen Yan took out her phone.
A small red light flashed on its screen.
Before leaving the airport...
She had placed a nearly invisible tracking thread on Shen Tian’s clothing.
A second thread had attached itself to the attacker’s sleeve when she broke his wrist.
That thread had transferred onto one of the escaping men when he tried to pull the driver away.
She watched the signal move across the city.
"So..." Her voice was quiet. "There you are."
The attackers had taken refuge inside an abandoned warehouse near the industrial district.
Three men remained.
One clutched his injured shoulder.
Another paced furiously near the entrance.
The third tried repeatedly to contact someone using a disposable phone.
"No answer."
He threw the phone onto a table.
"They’ve cut us off." The injured man looked up.
"What do you mean they’ve cut us off?"
"They aren’t answering."
"Try the secondary number."
"I did."
"The emergency line?"
"Nothing."
Silence filled the warehouse.
The man near the entrance looked through a cracked window.
"We need to leave the city."
"With what money?"
"We were supposed to be paid after confirmation."
The injured man slammed his fist against the table.
"We didn’t confirm anything! The target survived! That woman killed the driver! She wasn’t in the briefing! No one said Shen Tian had someone like that protecting him!"
The third man quietly spoke.
"We were abandoned the moment the operation failed."
Another silence followed.
They all understood.
Their employer had never expected them to return.
The mission had been designed with only two outcomes.
Success... Or silence.
One of them suddenly looked toward the large warehouse doors.
"...Did you hear that?"
The others stopped moving.
Nothing.
Only the distant dripping of water.
Then... The overhead lights switched off.
Darkness swallowed the warehouse.
"What happened?"
"Check the breaker!"
