Chapter 122: The Report
The capital came into view beneath the afternoon sun.
Its enormous walls stretched across the horizon, with watchtowers rising above them and banners moving in the wind.
Kael slowed his horse.
After weeks away from the capital, the sight should have brought relief.
Instead, he felt the weight of everything he had learned settle on his shoulders.
The river.
The villages.
The creatures.
The mountain.
The ancient seal.
And the strange fragment hidden beneath his coat.
Torren rode beside him.
"Home."
Kael looked toward the city.
"For now."
They continued toward the gates.
The guards recognized the Imperial insignia immediately.
The gates opened.
Inside, the capital was alive.
Merchants filled the streets.
Carriages moved between crowded intersections.
Soldiers patrolled the roads.
Nobles traveled beneath decorated canopies.
Kael hadn’t realized how much noise the capital contained until he had spent weeks among quiet villages.
Torren looked around.
"I almost forgot how crowded this place is."
Lyra smiled.
"Give it a day. You’ll wish you were back in the wilderness."
"I already do."
Kael ignored them.
His eyes moved across the streets.
Everything appeared normal.
People laughed.
Children played.
Merchants argued over prices.
Nobody knew what was happening beyond the northern provinces.
Kael wondered how long that would last.
They reached the Imperial Palace before sunset.
The guards opened the inner gates.
Kael dismounted.
A palace attendant approached.
He wore a cream-colored robe with gold embroidery and kept his hands folded before him.
"Your Highness, His Majesty is waiting."
Kael nodded.
"Now?"
"Immediately."
Kael looked at Torren and Lyra.
"Wait here."
Torren nodded.
Kael followed the attendant through the palace.
The halls were familiar.
He had walked them countless times.
But something felt different.
Perhaps it was simply that he had changed.
He was no longer returning from a routine expedition.
He was bringing news that could affect entire provinces.
The attendant opened the chamber doors.
Kael entered.
His father sat at the head of the room.
The emperor wore a dark imperial robe embroidered with silver dragons. A few documents rested before him.
His expression was calm.
But his eyes immediately focused on Kael.
"You took longer than expected."
Kael bowed.
"Because the expedition changed."
The emperor leaned back.
"Explain."
Kael remained standing.
"The river problem was caused by an old dam belonging to House Valen."
His father listened.
"The dam was diverting water away from several villages."
"Why?"
"House Valen claimed it was built to protect the province."
Kael paused.
"It was actually connected to something beneath the river."
The Emperor’s expression changed slightly.
"What?"
Kael placed the copied records on the table.
"An underground chamber."
The emperor looked down at the documents.
Kael continued.
"The chamber had been sealed for decades."
"By whom?"
"The Empire."
Silence.
The emperor slowly lifted his eyes.
"Continue."
Kael told him about the workers who had disappeared.
The old records.
The strange symbol.
The disturbances from seven years ago.
The creatures are fleeing from the mountains.
The altered wells.
The ancient passage.
The chains.
And finally—
"The seal is weakening."
The emperor didn’t speak.
Kael watched him carefully.
His father picked up one of the documents.
"Where did you find this symbol?"
"Under the river."
The Emperor’s fingers stopped.
Kael noticed.
"You recognize it."
His father looked at the symbol.
"I have seen it before."
Kael’s expression sharpened.
"Where?"
The Emperor didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he asked,
"Did you enter the chamber beneath the mountain?"
"Yes."
The room became silent.
"Did you see anything?"
Kael thought of the enormous eyes.
"I saw evidence that something had been imprisoned there."
His father slowly stood.
"Did you disturb the seal?"
"No."
"Are you certain?"
"Yes."
The Emperor exhaled.
"Good."
Kael frowned.
"You know what it is."
"I know what the records say."
"Then tell me."
The Emperor looked toward the windows.
"The records are incomplete."
Kael almost laughed.
"That’s what the system says every time I ask it something."
His father turned.
"System?"
Kael realized what he had said.
He hadn’t intended to mention it.
The Emperor studied him.
"You’ve been keeping something from me."
Kael didn’t deny it.
"My abilities have changed."
"How?"
"I’ve awakened powers I didn’t possess before."
The Emperor’s eyes narrowed.
"Which ones?"
Kael hesitated.
Then answered.
"Ice."
The Emperor’s expression remained controlled.
"Blood."
Silence.
"And night."
The emperor slowly sat back down.
Kael watched him.
His father’s reaction told him more than words could have.
"You knew this was possible."
The Emperor shook his head.
"Not possible."
"Then what?"
The Emperor looked at his son.
"Rare."
Kael stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
His father remained silent.
Kael’s patience began to thin.
"Father."
The Emperor finally spoke.
"It means we have more to discuss than the mountain."
Kael frowned.
"What else?"
The emperor looked toward the palace doors.
"Your expedition was not the only matter that changed while you were away."
Kael waited.
"There are matters within the Imperial family that require your attention."
Kael’s expression tightened.
"Which matters?"
The Emperor didn’t answer.
Instead, he gathered the reports.
"You have been away for some time."
"I know."
"Things have shifted."
"How?"
His father looked at him.
"Your siblings have begun moving."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Against each other?"
"Some."
"Against me?"
The Emperor’s expression remained unreadable.
"Perhaps."
Kael was silent.
The Emperor continued.
"I gave each of you responsibilities for a reason."
Kael remembered his father’s earlier decision.
Each sibling had been given different tasks.
Different trials.
Different responsibilities.
He had assumed the results would be compared eventually.
Apparently, they already were.
His father stood.
"I want your full report tomorrow."
Kael nodded.
"Understood."
"And Kael."
He stopped at the door.
"Yes?"
"Do not speak of the mountain outside this room."
Kael turned.
"Why?"
His father’s gaze hardened.
"Because there are people in this palace who would kill to know what you found."
Kael stared at him.
The words settled heavily.
"Are they part of the Imperial family?"
The emperor said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Kael left the chamber.
The doors closed behind him.
For several moments, he stood alone in the corridor.
Then Torren approached from the other end.
"How did it go?"
Kael looked toward the palace doors.
"Complicated."
Torren sighed.
"That doesn’t sound good."
Kael started walking.
"No."
He looked ahead.
"It doesn’t."
Behind the closed doors, the Emperor remained alone with the reports.
His eyes rested on the ancient symbol.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
He quietly whispered to himself:
"So it has begun again."
And somewhere deep within the Imperial Palace...
Someone else was already reading a report about Kael’s return.
