The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire

Chapter 123: The Gathering

Kael walked through the palace corridor without speaking.

The conversation with his father remained in his mind.

There are people in this palace who would kill to know what you found.

He had expected political trouble when he returned.

He hadn’t expected his father to sound genuinely concerned.

Torren caught up with him.

"You’ve been quiet."

Kael kept walking.

"I’m thinking."

"About the mountain?"

"Among other things."

Torren glanced around the corridor.

"Did the Emperor tell you what happens next?"

"He wants my full report tomorrow."

"And tonight?"

Kael stopped.

"Tonight, I go home."

Torren smiled.

"Finally."

Kael looked toward the palace gates.

"Yes."

But before he could continue, footsteps approached from behind.

A palace attendant bowed.

"Your Highness."

Kael turned.

"Yes?"

"Lady Serina requests your presence."

Kael’s expression remained neutral.

"Where?"

"The western reception hall."

Torren looked at him.

Kael understood immediately.

One of his siblings was waiting.

He looked at the attendant.

"Who else is there?"

The attendant hesitated.

"Several members of the Imperial family."

Kael sighed.

"So much for going home."

Torren laughed.

Kael gave him a look.

"You find this amusing?"

"A little."

Kael turned toward the western hall.

"Stay here."

Torren nodded.

The western reception hall was smaller than the main court.

It was designed for private gatherings.

Kael entered.

Several familiar faces were already present.

At the center of the room stood Aurelia, wearing a long crimson gown embroidered with silver thread. Her dark hair was gathered behind her head, and a thin jeweled chain rested across her forehead.

She turned when Kael entered.

A faint smile appeared.

"Kael."

He nodded.

"Aurelia."

Near the windows stood Darius.

He wore a deep blue coat over a white tunic, with a sword hanging at his side.

He looked toward Kael.

"You’re finally back."

Kael walked farther into the room.

"Apparently."

Darius smiled.

"You look different."

"So do you."

"I’ve been busy."

Kael looked around.

"Where is everyone else?"

Aurelia answered.

"Not everyone was invited."

Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Then why was I?"

Aurelia smiled.

"Because you’re the subject of tonight’s conversation."

Kael stared at her.

"That’s reassuring."

Darius laughed.

Aurelia shook her head.

"You always assume the worst."

"Experience."

The doors closed behind Kael.

The room became quieter.

Darius leaned against the table.

"We heard your expedition became more complicated than expected."

Kael looked at him.

"Who told you?"

"News travels quickly."

"That isn’t an answer."

Darius shrugged.

"Then consider it a warning."

Kael studied him.

"What kind?"

"While you were gone, things changed."

Kael’s expression hardened.

His father’s words echoed in his mind.

Your siblings have begun moving.

Aurelia stepped closer.

"Several of us have already completed our assignments."

Kael nodded.

"How did they go?"

She smiled.

"Some better than others."

Darius looked toward the door.

"And some have begun using their results to gain influence."

Kael remained silent.

He wasn’t interested in competing with his siblings tonight.

He wanted to return to his estate.

But something about Darius’s tone suggested this conversation mattered.

"What are you both trying to tell me?"

Aurelia looked at him.

"Your return has attracted attention."

Kael frowned.

"Because of the expedition?"

"Partly."

"And the rest?"

Aurelia’s smile disappeared.

"Because Father is watching all of us more closely now."

Kael crossed his arms.

"That isn’t new."

"No."

Darius straightened.

"But this time, the court is watching too."

Kael understood.

The emperor had given each sibling responsibilities.

The results would affect their standing.

And everyone knew it.

Aurelia continued.

"You were away for weeks."

"I know."

"During that time, some people began asking why."

Kael’s expression remained calm.

"Let them ask."

Darius shook his head.

"That’s easy to say when you don’t understand what they’re saying."

Kael looked at him.

"Then explain."

Darius hesitated.

Before he could answer, the doors opened.

A palace servant stepped inside.

"Your Highness."

Kael turned.

"Yes?"

"The Emperor has summoned all members of the Imperial family."

The room fell silent.

Aurelia looked toward Darius.

Darius’s expression became serious.

"When?"

"Immediately."

Kael exhaled.

"So much for going home."

Darius smiled faintly.

"You said that already."

Kael looked at him.

"I was hoping it would work the second time."

The Imperial family gathered in the great audience chamber.

Kael entered among his siblings.

The chamber was already filled with officials.

Nobles stood along the walls.

Military commanders occupied the first rows.

Kael noticed immediately that the atmosphere was different from the usual gatherings.

Nobody was relaxed.

The emperor sat upon the imperial throne.

Beside him sat the Empress.

She wore a black and gold gown, her dark hair carefully arranged beneath a jeweled crown.

Her eyes moved across the room.

When they reached Kael, they paused.

Only for a moment.

Then she looked away.

Kael noticed.

He said nothing.

The Emperor raised his hand.

The chamber became silent.

"You have all returned from the duties I assigned."

His gaze moved across his children.

"Each of you was given a different responsibility."

No one spoke.

"I did not assign those duties to create competition."

The Emperor’s voice carried through the chamber.

"I assigned them so I could see how each of you thinks."

Kael listened.

"This Empire will not always be ruled by armies."

The emperor looked toward the assembled nobles.

"Nor will it survive through strength alone."

His gaze returned to his children.

"Judgment matters."

"Discipline matters."

"Mercy matters."

"And the ability to recognize when you are wrong matters most of all."

Kael glanced toward his siblings.

Everyone listened differently.

Some appeared confident.

Others are nervous.

Some looked bored.

The Emperor continued.

"Tonight, I will hear what each of you accomplished."

One of the officials stepped forward.

He carried a stack of reports.

"The first report concerns Aurelia."

Aurelia stepped forward.

Kael watched quietly.

She began explaining the work she had completed during her assignment.

She spoke clearly.

Confidently.

She knew the details.

The Emperor listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he nodded.

"Well done."

Aurelia returned to her place.

The next name was called.

Then another.

Kael listened.

For the first time, he understood what his father had meant.

This wasn’t about Kael.

It wasn’t even primarily about the expedition.

The Emperor was judging all of them.

Each had been given a different road.

Each had returned carrying different results.

Then—

"Kael."

The chamber became quiet.

Kael stepped forward.

He could feel dozens of eyes on him.

The emperor looked at him.

"Begin."

Kael took a breath.

"The assignment began with a water dispute."

He continued.

He explained the damaged waterways.

The villages.

House Valen.

The hidden dam.

The discovery beneath the river.

He carefully chose his words.

He did not mention the system.

He did not mention the voice.

He did not reveal everything about the mountain.

But he reported enough.

When he reached the part about the creatures, several nobles began murmuring.

The Emperor raised his hand.

Silence returned.

Kael finished.

"The immediate water crisis has been contained."

The Emperor nodded.

"And the villages?"

"Protected for now."

"And the creatures?"

"Still moving south."

The emperor’s expression hardened.

"How many?"

"We don’t know."

A commander spoke from the side.

"Your Majesty, if the reports are accurate, we may need to reinforce the northern garrisons."

The emperor looked toward him.

"Prepare a proposal."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Kael stepped backward.

But before he could return to his place, the Emperor spoke again.

"One final question."

Kael turned.

"Yes?"

"What did you learn?"

The chamber became completely silent.

Kael thought about the journey.

The villagers.

The creatures.

The mountain.

The seal.

Then he answered.

"I learned that an empire can have thousands of soldiers and still leave people helpless."

Several nobles exchanged glances.

Kael continued.

"I learned that problems don’t always wait for soldiers to arrive."

His eyes moved briefly across the chamber.

"And I learned that if we only respond after a crisis begins, we will always be late."

The emperor stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then his father nodded.

"Return to your place."

Kael did.

But as he walked back, he noticed the Empress watching him.

Her expression was unreadable.

Not admiration.

Not approval.

Something colder.

Kael took his seat.

The Emperor continued with the remaining reports.

But Kael barely heard them.

His mind had already returned to one thought.

The Empire had too many problems.

Too few people to solve them.

And sooner or later...

Someone would have to find another way.
