Chapter 142: The Hall of Dragons
The great bronze doors of the Hall of Dragons slowly opened.
A deep horn echoed through the Imperial Palace.
One by one, nobles, generals, governors, ministers, and members of the Imperial Family entered the chamber.
Kael stepped inside.
Even after seeing it before, the hall remained breathtaking.
Twelve enormous dragon pillars supported the vaulted ceiling.
Each pillar was carved from a different stone, depicting one of the legendary dragons said to have existed before the founding of the Empire.
Golden chandeliers illuminated the chamber.
Rows of seats curved around the circular floor.
At the very center stood a raised platform bearing the Imperial Dragon.
Above it...
The Imperial Throne.
Empty.
For now.
Kael quietly took his assigned seat.
He observed instead of speaking.
That was how one learned.
The hall slowly filled.
General Hector Valen, the Empire’s Shield, entered wearing polished black armor decorated with silver laurels. The scars across his face made him appear more intimidating than any weapon at his side.
Conversations immediately quieted as he took his place among the Empire’s highest military commanders.
Nearby sat Chancellor Roland Vester, surrounded by several ministers already discussing reports.
Minister Cass Volaris leafed through a thick collection of documents, occasionally whispering to nearby officials.
Farther ahead...
Commander Severus Kane stood beside several officers of the Imperial Guard.
Every person in the chamber represented decades of experience.
Some had governed provinces.
Others had commanded armies.
Some had shaped Imperial law itself.
Kael remained silent.
Listening.
Watching.
Learning.
A door behind the nobles opened.
Prince Adrian Aurelius Asterion entered first.
The commander of the Imperial Third Legion wore dark blue military attire beneath a white ceremonial cloak embroidered with the Imperial Dragon.
He acknowledged several generals before taking his seat.
Shortly afterward...
Princess Seraphine Aurelius Asterion entered.
Unlike Adrian, she wore elegant white robes trimmed with gold rather than armor.
Many nobles immediately stood to greet her.
She acknowledged each with calm grace before sitting.
Princess Elena Aurelius Asterion followed.
As always...
She wore simple blue robes instead of armor.
No jewels.
No elaborate ornaments.
Only quiet dignity.
She greeted several diplomats before taking her place.
A few moments later...
Prince Marcus Aurelius Asterion entered wearing practical military clothing instead of noble attire.
His expression remained serious.
Several officers saluted him.
He returned each salute without slowing his pace.
Kael noticed something.
Every sibling carried themselves differently.
Different personalities.
Different followers.
Different ambitions.
None of them looked alike beyond their shared bloodline.
Exactly as an Imperial Family should be.
The massive doors opened once more.
Silence swept across the chamber.
Prince Cassian Aurelius Asterion entered.
The First Prince.
The Crown Blade.
Thirty-four years old.
The Empire’s greatest swordsman.
He wore a simple black military coat over dark armor.
No unnecessary decoration.
No excessive medals.
Only a single dragon insignia rested upon his chest.
Yet his presence alone commanded the room.
Generals who had never bowed to lesser nobles inclined their heads respectfully.
Cassian acknowledged no one.
He walked directly to his seat beside the Imperial Throne.
His face revealed nothing.
Kael watched him carefully.
Strength.
Discipline.
Control.
No wonder the Empire expected him to become the next emperor.
The chamber doors closed.
A herald struck the marble floor with his staff.
"His Imperial Majesty..."
Every person stood.
"...Emperor Augustus Aurelius Asterion!"
The doors behind the throne slowly opened.
Emperor Augustus Aurelius Asterion entered wearing flowing white robes bordered with gold over black ceremonial armor.
The Imperial Crown rested lightly upon his silver hair.
He needed no announcement.
His presence alone silenced the chamber.
Kael lowered his head with everyone else.
The emperor ascended the platform.
Only after taking his seat upon the throne did he speak.
"You may sit."
His voice was calm.
Yet it carried effortlessly throughout the hall.
Everyone obeyed.
The emperor looked across the chamber.
His sharp eyes lingered briefly on each member of the Council.
When they reached Kael...
They paused.
Only for a heartbeat.
Then moved on.
"I have not summoned you," the Emperor began.
"...to discuss succession."
Several nobles exchanged brief glances.
"I have not summoned you to discuss taxation."
Silence.
"Nor territorial disputes."
The emperor rested one hand upon the throne.
"Three Imperial border forts have ceased communication."
The chamber stiffened.
"Fort Redstone."
He looked toward General Hector Valen.
"Fort Highwatch."
His gaze shifted.
"And Fort Dawn."
No one spoke.
General Hector Valen stood.
"Your Majesty."
"You have the reports."
"I do."
The general stepped into the center of the chamber.
Maps were unrolled across a large table.
"The first fort missed its scheduled report twelve days ago."
He pointed.
"The second... nine."
Another point.
"The third..."
"...five."
General Hector looked toward the Council.
"Reconnaissance parties have failed to locate survivors."
Quiet murmurs spread through the hall.
Then he placed another document upon the table.
"The scouts found no signs of siege."
No siege?
Kael frowned.
"No evidence of an organized army."
More whispers.
"No signs of plague."
The room grew even quieter.
General Hector looked directly at the emperor.
"Only destroyed walls..."
He paused.
"...and claw marks."
The chamber fell completely silent.
Minister Cass Volaris stood.
"Monsters?"
General Hector answered honestly.
"We don’t know."
Marcus leaned forward.
"What kind of monster destroys three forts without leaving tracks?"
"No ordinary beast."
Adrian folded his arms.
"Perhaps multiple monsters."
Another general shook his head.
"No migration of that size has ever been recorded."
Several ministers immediately began arguing.
"It could be the western kingdoms."
"Nonsense."
"A magical disaster?"
"Impossible."
"The reports are incomplete."
The discussion quickly grew louder.
Kael remained silent.
Watching.
Listening.
His fingers tapped lightly against the armrest.
Then...
The familiar blue screen appeared before his eyes.
System Notification
World Event Detected
Large-Scale Threat Progression
Synchronization...

Hidden Storyline Updated.
Future Probability Altered.
Reward Conditions Revised.
Kael’s breathing slowed.
Only he could see the message.
A World Event?
Not a personal quest.
Not a territory mission.
Something affecting the entire continent.
Before he could think further...
The emperor raised one hand.
The chamber immediately fell silent.
Augustus Aurelius Asterion looked across every noble, every general, every prince and princess.
"The Empire stands because our ancestors prepared for threats before they reached our walls."
His gaze hardened.
"We will do the same."
Then he looked directly at the military commanders.
"I will authorize a full Imperial investigation."
General Hector bowed.
"It shall be done."
The Emperor’s eyes shifted once more across the room.
Finally...
They rested on Kael.
"Kael."
Every noble turned toward the Tenth Prince.
The hall became so quiet that even the crackling of the braziers could be heard.
The emperor spoke calmly.
"I have also received reports regarding Blackwood."
Kael stood.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"They are... favorable."
A few nobles looked surprised.
The emperor continued.
"You have increased trade."
"You have begun rebuilding your roads."
"You have attracted settlers."
"You have invested in your people."
He paused.
"Continue."
Kael bowed deeply.
"I shall not disappoint Your Majesty."
A faint smile appeared on the emperor’s face.
"I know."
The smile vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
"But remember..."
His voice echoed through the Hall of Dragons.
"A lord who builds quickly..."
"...will one day attract enemies just as quickly."
Kael met his father’s eyes.
For the first time since inheriting Blackwood...
He realized that his greatest challenge might not be building his territory.
It would be protecting everything he built.
