Chapter 1799 - 1804: The Source of Evil
"How did you know?" Gai Xiaolian asked. He hadn’t expected Lin Fei to actually know.
Lin Fei smiled. "Miss, have you ever heard a saying?"
"What saying?" Gai Xiaolian asked.
"It’s a saying about evil. It goes, all evil has a beginning and an end—in other words, evil has a source." Lin Fei said with a smile.
"Evil has a source? This is my first time hearing that, I’ve never heard it before." Gai Xiaolian said. Though he felt the words made a lot of sense, he indeed had never heard them.
Lin Fei smiled. "What it means is, your father and your eldest brother are the ones managing this city. So the root of everything, the reason the people are wailing in misery, must lie between your brother and your father. There has to be one of them who’s the real culprit behind all this."
Hearing Lin Fei’s words, Gai Xiaolian’s brow immediately furrowed. "Lin Fei, you can’t talk nonsense like that. My brother has been helping my father for many years, and besides..."
"Besides what?" Lin Fei looked at Gai Xiaolian with a smile.
Gai Xiaolian thought for a moment, then finally shook his head. "It can’t be my brother’s fault."
"Whether it is or not, I have a way to find out. I don’t know if you’re willing to let me give it a try. If it works, the citizens in the city will be saved. If it fails, then I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you anymore. On the contrary, your father might vent his anger on you because of me."
Hearing this, Gai Xiaolian’s brows knit tightly together. He spoke up: "What is it you want to do? If you’re confident, I’ll back you."
For a man who wants to make his mark, the thing he needs most is a woman behind him saying those three words, "I support you!"
Without a doubt, although Gai Xiaolian was cold, he still gave Lin Fei a kind of psychological satisfaction and comfort, so Lin Fei was quite grateful to him.
"Alright, then when is your father calling me over?" Lin Fei asked.
"It should be very soon. If you want it earlier, I can go talk to my father, and you should be able to see him right away." Gai Xiaolian said.
Lin Fei nodded. "Then go. I’ll go find a few people first, and if anything comes up, just wait here for me to come back. I’ll be back soon, alright?"
Gai Xiaolian looked at Lin Fei. He didn’t know whether this man in front of him would deceive him, but he felt this man was worth trusting. Otherwise, why hadn’t he taken the perfect chance to leave just now?
"Alright, I’ll go right now." Gai Xiaolian finished speaking, then headed toward the main hall of the City Lord Mansion.
As for Lin Fei, he left the City Lord Mansion and went straight toward the City Defense Army.
To the people within the city, the City Defense Army was like a group of saviors. But now the City Defense Army seemed to have fallen into danger as well. The commoners of the city were all on edge, because Shang Madao had been arrested.
Of course, the City Defense Army had their own unique way of handling things: they went to look for the old General of the City Defense Army.
The old General lived in the city, but in a corner far from the center. As an old General, naturally he wanted for nothing in food and clothing. But today, an uninvited guest came to the old General’s place.
Not just one, but a group of City Defense Army soldiers, led by Liu Neng. After they arrived, the old General came out.
Though a hero in his twilight years, it had to be said that his soldier’s bearing had not diminished in the least, and he still gave people a strong sense of pressure.
At this moment, the neatly dressed old man came out, looked at the City Defense Army in front of him, and said, "What are you doing here? What business do you have?"
"Old General, please stand up for our commander!" Liu Neng was the first to kneel, and the others all followed, kneeling in turn.
"What happened? Tell me, let me hear it." The old General sat on the chair the servant had brought over and looked at them as he spoke.
"Old General, here’s what happened..."
Liu Neng told the truth of the matter, but in the end still spoke ill of Lin Fei. Of course, it wasn’t exactly slander, more of a misunderstanding. Lin Fei had been misunderstood by them and could only take the blame.
At this point, Lin Fei had been completely misunderstood by Liu Neng, with all the failures being pinned entirely on him. After all, they had seen with their own eyes Lin Fei together with people from the City Lord Mansion, and not only that, they’d seemed to be talking quite happily. How could that not make them suspicious?
After hearing Liu Neng’s explanation, the old General nodded. "In this matter, you indeed didn’t handle things properly. But Ancient Meng City is no longer the Ancient Meng City of the past. And in any case, this is something I truly can’t interfere in."
"Old General, how can you not interfere? At least you could... you could go and say a few words, couldn’t you?" Liu Neng said.
The old General did not refuse. He nodded. "This matter has indeed already endangered our Ancient Meng City. Since that’s the case, as the former General of the City Defense Army, I can’t just stand by. I’ll go with you."
Hearing the old General agree, Liu Neng was instantly overjoyed, but the old General’s next words left them a bit disheartened. "But don’t get your hopes up too high. I lost my authority a long time ago, so don’t expect too much. Otherwise, the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment."
"Yes! As long as you’re willing to help, Old General, we’re already very grateful." Liu Neng said, leading the others to bow deeply to the old General.
"Get up. Come with me."
After speaking, the old General stood up, went back into the room, and changed into a set of light clothes. Though advanced in years, he was still spirited and imposing, with a very striking bearing.
"Let’s go!"
The old General took the lead, heading toward the City Lord Mansion.
At this moment, Lin Fei was at the main gate of the City Defense Army. But he didn’t see Liu Neng and the others. After asking around, he found the rest of them full of hostility toward him. Lin Fei was puzzled, but since he couldn’t find them, he could only wait a bit longer. In the end, when it really wasn’t working out, Lin Fei retraced his steps.
All the way, Lin Fei’s brows were tightly furrowed. What should he do if he couldn’t find them?
Just then, as Lin Fei was walking with his head down, a voice suddenly came from behind him.
"Old General, that’s him, that’s Lin Fei! I didn’t expect this spy to actually be here! Brothers, seize him!"
With a shout, Lin Fei was shocked to discover that Liu Neng was actually here, saving him the trouble of looking. But what Liu Neng said left Lin Fei baffled. What did he mean?
In no time at all, Lin Fei was surrounded by the City Defense Army guards. The people around them scattered, closing their doors, peeking at the scene on the street through cracks.
"Liu Neng, I was just about to look for you. Come with me to the City Lord Mansion for a bit, alright?" Lin Fei said.
