The Only Cultivator in a World of Hunters

Chapter 71: The Second Disciple

[Nexus, you got lucky this time. The second disciple slot was unlocked a few minutes ago.]

Nexus didn’t pay attention to the system’s nonsense. What luck? It was obvious the system had a pretty good impression of White too.

Nexus’s request was so far beyond anything White had expected that she was stunned speechless. Setting aside whether Nexus was even capable of it, White had already developed herself to almost her limit.

Was there anyone in this world who could teach her how to become stronger? Even if someone had more knowledge than her, she didn’t need it. As for scientific research, she wanted it even less because she knew she wasn’t born for that.

"Are you serious?"

White said as she closed her eyes to look at Nexus. There was no point keeping them open since she couldn’t see anything inside his body anyway. Closing them and using the perspective of an ordinary human at least let her see his expression clearly.

"Of course."

Nexus’s expression barely changed, so White couldn’t spot anything unusual. He already knew she was an S-rank hunter and still wanted to teach her. Could Nexus really have something special?

"What do I get from becoming your disciple?"

White was one of humanity’s top elites after all. She wasn’t stupid enough to randomly give herself a master for no reason.

"Cultivating makes people stronger and lets them live an incredibly long time. Someone like you would live at least a few million years. If you’re lucky, you’ll become an immortal."

"That’s it?"

Nexus had barely finished explaining before he saw White curl her lip in disappointment. Her reaction was even more extreme than Bell’s.

[I’m only giving you advice because you have some connection to heaven. The benefits of getting help from this great system aren’t something mortals like you can even imagine.]

The way the system spoke up suddenly became incredibly civilized and polite. It was true that White had a connection to heaven because her power was obviously like a weaker version of an angel’s, but that wasn’t the main reason.

The biggest reason was that she had entertained the system immensely by successfully trampling Ziz’s pride, and the system wanted this to happen even more.

"You damn system! You want this damn arrogant mortal to become Nexus’s disciple just to mess with me?!"

Seeing the system help the "strongest enemy" Ziz had ever faced on Earth, Ziz immediately flared up and wanted to ram that damn system screen to pieces.

"Hmm?"

White hadn’t been that interested in becoming Nexus’s disciple, but now she’d changed her mind. Looking at Ziz’s and the system’s reactions, anyone with half a brain could guess that Ziz really didn’t want White to have the identity of "Nexus’s disciple."

"Hey, I’m not interested in what you said. Why would I chase immortality when I’m already guaranteed a chance to go to heaven and become an angel? If I can’t do it in this life, I’ll just do it in the next one. But what’ll happen to Ziz if I become your disciple?"

Nexus looked at her, and for some reason, the corner of his mouth curled up again. Maybe he found it pretty interesting? Or was Lucifer’s heart working a little too hard?

"Ziz is the bodyguard of my disciples and me. Of course he’ll protect every member of the Cultivation Academy. If you’re my disciple, Ziz absolutely can’t hit you as hard as he did just now. At most, Ziz can only peck at you like a little chick. So I’m sure Ziz will go into offline mode. That way, you won’t hear him talking anymore."

"There’s actually something this good?"

Hearing that, White’s face instantly brightened. She wasn’t smiling, but that endless joy couldn’t be hidden.

"I agree."

She thought everything was settled, but unexpectedly, this time it was Nexus who had a problem. And on top of that, it was the first time.

"But I don’t agree."

"You dare mess with me?!"

Something good that was about to happen suddenly slipped away, making White’s mouth twitch. She tried to stay calm and not punch Nexus’s annoying face because if she actually did, she’d lose her chance completely.

That’s right. Hit him, hit him, hit him...

As the tension rose, Ziz found hope once again. As long as Nexus kept this up, he’d definitely beat White up to repay all the humiliation he’d suffered.

[Nexus, what’s wrong with your stupid brain today? Don’t you usually agree to everything? I think she’s ten thousand times better than Mark. Think it over.]

The system looked at Nexus in surprise. But it couldn’t make the decision for Nexus, so all it could do was try to persuade him.

Since it was giving advice, the system held back a few of its harsher words, though it was only holding back, not suddenly becoming polite.

"I’m spreading cultivation, but you refuse to cultivate, so what’s the point of becoming my disciple? Of course I won’t agree."

Nexus said calmly. His ordinary, harmless mortal gaze locked onto White’s eyes, yet it made her feel confused.

This absolute confidence didn’t feel like something a weak person should have. But if he was only G-rank, even lower than F-rank, then where did that confidence come from?

White was a little suspicious, then she started paying attention to what Nexus had been saying this whole time. Maybe Nexus really did know how to cultivate, and his strength came from that instead of awakened powers like hunters.

"So what exactly do I have to do?"

White wanted to know more before deciding. If cultivating was some weird thing that took way too much time, she couldn’t agree to it.

For some reason, she’d had less and less work lately, but before that, she’d been so busy she didn’t even have time to go home.

"First, tell me whether you agree or not."

Maybe White’s angel-like power made Lucifer’s heart react especially strongly, because Nexus became more mischievous than ever.

Instead of answering directly like usual, Nexus forced White into a position where she wouldn’t get the details unless she agreed.

Nexus didn’t dislike this strange feeling either. At least it wasn’t really hurting anyone. He was just finding a little "tiny" bit of fun.

"You... Fine. I agree."

It had been a long time since White had wanted to curse someone this badly. But the words that were about to leave her mouth were swallowed back down.

Even knowing full well that a huge "trap" was right in front of her, White still decided to take the gamble.

She was an S-rank after all. Even if this G-rank was very mysterious, there was no way he could scare her into backing down.
