Chapter 964 - The Undead Siege
The crystal greatsword turned out to be Rank 9, far too high for Han Wu to place in a slot. He could only carry it on his back. This meant he couldn’t benefit from its attribute bonuses. All he had was the right to swing it.
Even that was terrifying enough. The crystal greatsword was immensely powerful, and its material quality alone could inflict devastating damage.
After returning to his guild room with the greatsword, Han Wu slept soundly through the night. He awoke the next morning to a commotion.
The vice president pounded on his door. “Are you awake? The Undead General has brought the full Undead Legion to attack the city!”
Han Wu got dressed, strapped the crystal greatsword to his back, and walked out. The vice president immediately handed him the three Rank 2 fire-attribute accessories he’d promised.
Equipping all three into his slots and feeling his fire attribute triple, he nodded in satisfaction. “Lead the way.”
The vice president ushered him toward the city gates. Outside, the battle was already raging. A flood of Galewind City adventurers charged into the field, clashing with the undead skeletons.
The Desolation Manifestation scanned the Undead Legion and gave its assessment. Other than the Fourth Form Undead General, the rest were all trash.
Han Wu agreed with that evaluation. After a brief stretch, he threw himself onto the battlefield. Facing a horde of charging undead skeletons, he raised both hands and unleashed Fire Breath Palm.
A fifteen-meter tongue of flame blasted forward, reducing the approaching skeletons to ash on contact. Dozens, then hundreds of skeletons burned to nothing with every passing second.
The vice president stood atop the city wall with his mouth hanging wide open. This was absurd. There was no wonder he’d asked for fire-attribute accessories. The power was staggering. Han Wu alone carved a path forward through the battlefield.
The Undead General wasn’t about to sit back and watch, though. It called upon its elite forces. Large numbers of First Form skeletons surged forward, their bones shimmering with colorful hues that marked their elemental attributes and skills.
Han Wu still wasn’t impressed. Their First Forms were cobbled together from random equipment with no cohesion. Worse still, they were useless to him since they had no set bonuses, no named legacy bonuses, and no meaningful stat synergy.
He blasted them with two rounds of Fire Breath Palm. Although the fifteen-meter flame tongues did slightly less damage to these First Form skeletons, most still turned to ash. Only those with fire, water, or ice attributes managed to endure the flames.
Unfortunately for the survivors, the only thing that awaited them was close combat with Han Wu. Those skeletons would finally get to witness true cruelty firsthand.
Atop the city wall, clad in full armor, Galewind City’s city lord surveyed the battlefield below. The Undead Legion’s ferocious assault had the city lord wishing he could leap into the fray himself. He had limited strength, though, and the skeleton horde would likely rip him apart if he jumped in recklessly.
Then he spotted Han Wu, blazing bright in the middle of the skeleton army. Barely any skeletons could get within a fifteen-meter radius of Han Wu. His fire was simply too fierce.
Initial State skeletons turned to ash upon contact with his flames. Even First Form skeletons hardly fared any better, perishing in under three seconds. The few survivors from the flames met an even worse fate, with a single kick from Han Wu shattering every bone in their skeletal bodies.
The city lord pointed down at Han Wu. “Who’s that man? He’s incredible!”
The vice president rushed forward to claim credit. “My lord, he’s an expert I personally recruited. I went to great lengths to bring him here to help Galewind City through this crisis.”
“Excellent work,” the city lord praised. “I’ll make sure to reward you well once the Undead Legion is defeated.”
The vice president beamed. He’d recruited Han Wu using guild resources, but the city lord’s reward would go straight into his own pocket. Spending the guild’s money to line his own pockets was a fine arrangement.
Han Wu’s performance only grew more oppressive. It didn’t take long for his kill count to number in the tens of thousands, nearly surpassing every other adventurer combined.
This naturally drew the Undead General’s attention. Urging its skeletal horse forward, it charged straight at Han Wu and unleashed its strongest transformation.
Blue-green flames engulfed the Undead General’s body as it took on its Fourth Form, the Ghostfire Skeleton. It radiated a distinct pressure. Even Han Wu’s Fire Breath Palm couldn’t harm it.
The Undead General rode its skeletal horse toward Han Wu, aiming to trample him under hoof. One stomp was all it would take to crush this troublesome pest.
Han Wu instantly reacted. He spun around, drew the crystal greatsword, and met the skeletal horse’s rising forelegs head-on. The impact snapped both of the horse’s front legs clean off.
The crippled horse buckled, crashing to the ground and bringing the Undead General with it. As the Undead General tumbled off, the blue-green flames covering its body flared with greater intensity.
“You crippled my steed. I’ll kill you!” the Undead General snarled using its soul voice, which Han Wu understood immediately.
“You’re upset I hit your horse?” Han Wu mocked. “Then I guess I’ll just hit you instead!”
He swung the crystal greatsword with practiced skill as he charged at the Undead General. At the same time, it drew a longsword wreathed in blue-green flame and met him head-on.
Their two blades collided.
Han Wu was sent flying.
The Undead General’s raw strength clearly exceeded his.
However, the Undead General didn’t come out unscathed either. Its longsword had snapped on impact. The remaining half looked rather ridiculous.
Han Wu cast Mend on himself to repair the damage while he carefully studied the Undead General. It had incredible strength, and clashing head-on would only put him at a disadvantage.
Disregarding its broken sword, the Undead General taunted, “Once you’re dead, that greatsword will be mine. I’ll use it to slaughter everyone in this city and turn them all into undead skeletons.”
Han Wu didn’t find these words particularly rage-inducing. After all, he had no personal stake in this battle. All he wanted was to claim the city lord’s promised reward.
“Consider yourself lucky. You get to be the first to see my First Form.” Han Wu’s body started to morph. “This will be your first time seeing it, and your last! Awoooo!”
