Chapter 66: Sable Vs Mercenaries
Sable was a name that was quite well known within the grey market for a single reason,
The man was a monster.
And these mercenaries soon learned exactly why.
"Which of you would like to die first?" Sable calmly asked as he rolled up his sleeves and looked at the men before him.
Some of them were hesitant. They had heard the rumors about his days as a mercenary, but then again... those were just rumors.
Besides, they knew he was unawakened, while there were three Awakened among them. There was no way an old man like him could take them all on.
"Come on, Sable," the leader of the group said, "I’m sure it’s not worth losing your life over a mercenary, right?"
Sable silently stared at them for a moment before stepping forward.
"Then I’ll just choose myself."
The leader of the mercenary group let out a disappointed sigh as he said, "Very well then, do as you wish."
"Perhaps Zero will finally come out if we manage to capture you as a hostage," he then turned to the rest before saying, "Rough him up, but make sure he doesn’t die; we’ll need a bait to reel the target out."
That just eliminated their intention of using guns. Still, knives and other weapons should suffice.
"It’s nothing personal, Sable," one of the mercenaries said as he confidently walked towards the agent, "I just really need me a share of that bounty."
"So please cooperate with us until th—" he didn’t get to complete his words when a large hand suddenly covered his vision.
And that was the last thing he remembered because the next second,
BOOM!
His body was used to carve a crater into the ground, completely knocking him out cold. From that moment on, the scene that came next could only be described as a massacre.
The secretary watched the scene unfold with a blank expression; she was just as angry as Sable was, so she displayed no pity for those money-hungry animals.
Rather, she’d have preferred if Sable didn’t dirty his own hands dealing with them, but she also understood that he needed a way to vent.
She suddenly noticed one of the mercenaries trying to escape.
The secretary calmly lifted her free hand, and the next second, the mercenary suddenly froze in place as he felt a heavy pressure fall on his shoulders.
"I’ll be using you to release all this pent-up anger," the secretary said as she slowly walked towards the frozen man.
***
Five minutes.
That’s how long it took Sable to deal with all the pests in front of his house, leaving an even larger trail of corpses behind.
The agent then sat at the stairs that led into his home with a blank expression still on his face as he looked at his doing.
He then looked down at his hands before muttering, "I still hate it."
"Wow, it seems you took care of them all," a voice suddenly came from his side, "and here I was, thinking that you’d need my help."
Sable turned to the side and noticed a white-haired man in a suit sitting by his side with what seemed to be a jelly baby pack in hand.
"Jelly babies?" Zero asked as he moved the pack towards Sable.
The agent looked at it before looking at his face and asking, "Aren’t you supposed to be at your sister’s birthday party?"
"I am," the hitman answered, "but who said I couldn’t be in two places at once?"
Sable seemed a bit confused at his words.
He then turned towards his secretary, and she simply tapped the device in her ear. After a while, a frown also appeared on her face as she reported, "he’s still at the party."
"See?" Zero said with a grin as he sent another jelly baby into his mouth, "two places at once."
That’s right, in just a few days before Lea’s birthday, the hitman had managed to gather enough information on the makeup of the human body to be able to create an almost perfect clone of himself.
Almost..
The problem with the clone was that it was just an empty shell, so the solution he had come up with was to split his mind into two.
One of which was currently controlling the Liam currently at the birthday party, though the problem with that was the fact that the farther away he was, the more Pragma it required to maintain that connection.
"I’m not going to ask how," Sable said as he let out a sigh before turning back to the corpses, "but why are you here?"
"To save you, in case you had gotten in some sort of trouble," he answered with a shrug.
"I didn’t think someone like you would worry about me," the agent said with an amused chuckle.
"Of course I am," Zero responded in a matter of factly tone, "who else can I financially extort if something happens to you?"
"..."
Sable looked at him for a while, not really surprised by the kid’s answer.
The two quietly continued looking at the corpses, while the confused secretary was still trying to figure out how the kid was in two places at once.
As far as she knew, even if his Factor was to create clones, his Pragma shouldn’t be enough to allow him to create a perfect clone, much less maintain one for this long.
"So," Zero spoke up again after a while, "why don’t you tell me about it?"
"About what?" Sable asked, looking at the kid.
"You seem to hate killing," Zero explained, "so why are you in this line of work?"
The comic never went into Sable’s backstory; it only hinted that the agent was carrying a burden because of his past.
But now was a time as good as any to find out why.
The agent was silent for a while before letting out a sigh and saying, "Explaining will take a while."
Zero got comfortable on the stairs.
"I’ve got time for a bit of backstory."
