Chapter 65: An Attack On Sable
"Happy Birthday, Little sis," Liam said with a smile on his face as he handed a perfectly wrapped box to her.
Lea looked at the gift box in his hand, smiled and then accepted it before putting it to the side.
They were currently in a place Liam had rented to celebrate her birthday, and there were quite a few people here.
Lea had invited a couple of friends from her school and a couple more of Eli’s friends.
Present were also Detective Riley, Sable, Olivia, Raika and somehow, Volt....or rather, Tyler.
The speedster hero had somehow gotten himself invited.
Why?
Liam had no idea, but he chose not to say anything either; after all, Eli had been the one who told him about the birthday party and said he could come.
"Thank you," Lea said with a smile as she hugged him.
"You’re welcome," Liam responded before looking behind her and saying, "You might want to hang out with your friends, since you’ll soon leave them for the hero academy."
"Hmm," Lea nodded and turned around, walking towards her friends.
Eli was also hanging out with his friends as he had automatically become the coolest kid in class due to the fact that she had invited Volt to his sister’s birthday party, and the hero actually came.
Speaking of said hero, he seemed awfully proud of flaunting stories of his rescues to the kids who were eating it all up.
"Are you certain you should be hanging out in the open like this?" A voice caused him to turn to the side, and he spotted Detective Riley approaching.
He guessed that Sable had told her about the bounty that was on him.
"It’s my sister’s birthday and there’s no way I wouldn’t not celebrate it," Liam responded with a shurg, "besides, the bounty was placed on Zero not Liam, so I’m certain that no one would come looking for me."
"..."
Liam suddenly stopped talking as he got the feeling that he might’ve just jinxed that....but it should be fine, after all, Sable’s men were currently making sure nothing went wrong.
Right?
Riley looked at the kid’s calm expression before letting out a sigh, she truly couldn’t understand what he was thinking despite being so proud of her observation skills.
"Aside from the bounty hunters, it seems senior Investigator Michael Owens has also taken an interest in you," Riley suddenly spoke up after a while of looking at him.
"Hmm?" Liam turned towards her.
Riley looked towards Volt and the kids as she explained, "since I was out of town until yesterday, he was called in to investigate Torque’s death."
"Is that so?" Liam said with a small smile on his face, "and it doesn’t bother you that I killed a hero?"
Riley turned back to him with a small frown on her face as she responded, "it does."
"But again," she continued, "I knew what he did, or rather, was doing, so it wasn’t really a surprise."
"I see," he said with a smile as he focused back on Lea and Eli.
He thought the detective would mind him killing a hero, but it seems he was wrong. Though he did understand why Riley wasn’t pissed.
After all, Torque had been mostly protected by the HA, so everything he did was without consequence.
So she was a bit glad that he had finally faced said consequence.
Liam then looked around the hall and noticed that Sable was missing, so he turned to the detective and asked, "where did your boyfriend go?"
"..." Riley looked at him with a blank expression, but she chose not to argue, instead she simply said, "he left to handle something."
"Is that so?" Liam muttered, a frown appearing on his face.

Meanwhile, Sable sat in his car with a dark expression on his face as the lady driving continued with her report.
"They’re now targeting you, his agent, to get to him," the woman said as she kept her eyes on the road.
"How bad is it?" Sable asked as he tried calming himself.
"Five of our mercenaries have been killed, and one of them decided to reveal our base to save himself." She gripped the steering wheel tightly as she continued, "Though he still ended up being killed."
Sable let out an exhausted sigh, he really thought that being an agent would be less.... hectic than his mercenary days.
Guess he was wrong.
Still, he leaned back with a small smile on his face as he said, "perhaps it’s time I remind them of who I once was."
He then looked into the rear view mirror before ordering, "make sure the kid stays at the birthday party."
"Understood," the woman responded as she placed a hand on her ear and tapped the device that was within and relayed Sable’s orders to the men around Liam and his family.
***
A trail of corpses.
That was the first thing Sable noticed as he exited the car.
Rather than a base of operations, this was simply his home that happened to hold Sable’s office, and the corpses belonged to the people that worked for him.
They all seemed as if they had died without an ounce of fear.
Slowly, the grey market agent walked towards them, crouched down and closed the eyes of the ones that had theirs open.
"Sorry you had to go through this because of me," Sable quietly said.
The woman, his assistant, silently stood behind him with both her hands behind her. She seemed to have a lot of anger to let out, but she allowed Sable a moment for now.
Unfortunately, the agent wouldn’t have that moment because the next second, a voice interrupted.
"We were wondering when you’d show up, Sable."
The agent stood up before he looked towards his house, his eyes resting on a group of mercenaries.
They seem to number up to ten, with only a few of them being awakened.
"Now then," the one that was, most likely, their leader, started, "tell us where Zero is."
Instead of a response, Sable simply stood up, took off his jacket and handed it to his assistant.
He then folded the sleeves of his shirt and looked back at the mercenaries before asking,
"Which of you would like to die first?"

A/N: As you can see, I’ve been really busy these days, hence the reason for place holders (which the next two Chapters are), I’d like to apologize for them and we’ll return to normal updates tomorrow.
