Lira leaped down from her wooden shelf, landing softly on the center of the blueprint. Where the steel rails of the High-Latitude Line terminated at the foot of the Great Ice Wall, the Calderholt logistics corps had constructed Airfield Alpha, a two-mile-long runway made of interlocked, perforated steel landing mats laid directly over the hard-packed glacial ice.

At the edge of the runway stood three massive, heated timber hangars, their chimneys belching white plumes of wood-smoke into the freezing air. Outside Hangar One, surrounded by a team of thirty mechanists, engineers, and fuel handlers, sat the result of twenty-one days of round-the-clock industrial effort: the Calderholt Mark VII Sky-Runner.

The aircraft was a triumph of functional, unadorned engineering. It possessed a wingspan of eighty feet, its skin made of smooth, riveted sheets of an aluminum-copper alloy that gleamed like polished silver under the harsh Arctic sun. "Fuel tanks are topped off with forty-octane aviation spirit, Elias," Jacob said, his breath freezing into white clouds the moment it left his mouth. "Eighty gallons in each wing panel. At cruising speed, she’ll give you six hours of flight time before you’re running on fumes."

"That gives us a three-hundred-mile operational radius," Elias said, checking the seal on his leather gloves. "More than enough to cross the Great Ice Wall and reach the coordinates Marcus mapped from the radio signals."

"The radial engines don’t rely on atmospheric draft to maintain combustion, Marcus," Elias replied smoothly, adjusting his optical goggles over his eyes. He stepped up the light aluminum ladder hooked to the side of the cockpit, swinging his leg over the cockpit sill and settling into the pilot’s leather bucket seat.

Jacob unhooked the aluminum ladder, stepping back and giving Elias a crisp, sharp hand salute.

Elias returned the salute, then pulled his optical goggles down over his eyes. He slowly advanced the twin hand throttles forward.

The Calderholt Mark VII Sky-Runner surged down the steel-plated runway.

The vibration was intense as the spring-loaded skis clicked violently over the perforated metal joints, but as the air-speed indicator needle swung past forty, fifty, then sixty miles per hour, the heavy wings began to bite into the dense Arctic air.

At seventy miles per hour, the vibration suddenly vanished.

The ground fell away beneath them, the timber hangars, the iron rail lines, and the tiny figures of Jacob and Marcus shrunk into miniature toys against the vast, blinding white expanse of the Arctic wilderness.

Elias pulled back gently on the control yoke. The metal nose of the Sky-Runner pointed toward the sky, climbing smoothly into the crisp, clear blue air at eight hundred feet per minute, leaving the old world of dirt and rails behind forever.

For two hours, the Sky-Runner flew north-northeast at nine thousand feet.

Below them lay the Great Ice Wall, a jagged, impassable barrier of vertical granite cliffs capped by glaciers three thousand feet thick that had blocked human exploration since the dawn of recorded history. From the air, however, the terrifying obstacle was reduced to a stunning, frozen topography of blue crevasses, white plateaus, and windswept snow ridges.

Inside the heated cockpit, the temperature remained a stable fifty degrees Fahrenheit, warmed by heat exchangers wrapped around the exhaust headers. The twin radial engines hummed in perfect mechanical harmony, their tachometers pinned at a steady twenty-two hundred revolutions per minute.

Lira leaned forward against the front windshield, her emerald forehead crystal emitting a continuous, low-frequency pulse.

Suddenly, the needle on the central directional radio receiver flickered.

The copper horn mounted beside Elias’s ear let out a sharp, metallic ping, the exact same rhythmic, rising-and-falling tone they had recorded at Cape Frost.

"Target acquisition," Elias said calmly into the cockpit speaking tube, though Lira was the only one there to hear him. "Signal strength is increasing. Distance approximately thirty miles."

He nudged the flight stick slightly to the right, dipping the silver starboard wing as the aircraft banked smoothly onto the new heading.

Ten minutes later, the blinding white expanse of the glacier abruptly ended.

Elias leaned forward, his golden eyes narrowing in absolute astonishment at the sight that unfolded through the lead-crystal windshield.

Plunging down through the glacier was a giant, circular crater, at least twenty miles in diameter, where the ice had been completely cleared away, revealing a vast, dark basin floor four thousand feet below the level of the ice sheet.

At the center of this geothermal anomaly stood no primitive stone city or magical spire.

It was a staggering, ultra-modern industrial metropolis of matte-black geometric towers, connected by elevated, enclosed transit tubes and surrounded by giant, slowly rotating white rings that hovered in mid-air without visible supports.

Above the central tower, a colossal structure that rose two thousand feet into the sky, hung a massive, inverted pyramid of white crystal, three times the size of the one they had destroyed at Cape Frost.

Around the central pyramid, dozens of black triangular vessels glided through the air in precise, automated flight patterns, docking at high-altitude gantries projecting from the sides of the black towers.

This was not a forward outpost. It was the heart of the cold network, a fully realized, high-technology civilization that had existed hidden beneath the Arctic ice sheet for centuries.

As the Sky-Runner crossed the rim of the crater, the copper radio horn in the cockpit didn’t just ping, it erupted into a continuous, high-volume broadcast of synthetic, binary data tones.

On the central instrument panel, the glass face of the gyro-compass cracked under a sudden, intense magnetic pulse.

Lira let out a sharp, urgent bark, her white fur standing on end as her crystal projected a warning shroud over the flight controls.

Through the clouds above the central tower, three sleek, black interceptors, smaller, faster variants of the triangular vessels, possessing no wings but surrounded by the ominous, pale-blue aura of absolute zero, detached from their docking gantries and rose sharply into the sky, vectoring directly toward the lone silver aircraft.

Elias’s hands remained steady on the flight stick, his pulse calm, his mind running through the aerodynamic and kinetic variables at three hundred calculations per second.

"They’ve noticed us," Elias murmured, his lips curving into a cold, brilliant smile as he slammed the twin throttles forward to the emergency war-power stop.

The nine-cylinder radial engines roared in response, the propellers biting into the sky as the Sky-Runner dove straight into the heart of the black city.
