The thaw at Cape Frost did not merely clear the ice from the harbor; it stripped away the illusion that the continent was an isolated island of progress in a world of dormant kingdoms.

Within forty-eight hours of the destruction of the first triangular vessel, the shorelines around the northern research station had transformed into an open-air laboratory. Huge steam cranes, mounted on heavy wooden barges and anchored to the granite cliffs, dredged tons of matte-black hull fragments and shattered crystalline structures from the icy seabed.

Inside the hastily erected corrugated-iron staging facility at the terminus of the High-Latitude Line, the air was heavy with the sharp smell of ozone, hot machine oil, and the faint, sweet scent of vaporized petroleum. Long trestle tables stretched down the center of the bay, littered with copper calipers, optical microscopes, chemical reagents, and heavy brass galvanic meters.

Elias stood at the central analysis table, his dark wool coat replaced by a stiff canvas apron splattered with mineral grease and acid stains. He held a thin, polished slice of the matte-black material under a compound monocular microscope, adjusting the fine focus knob with practiced, rhythmic turns of his thumb.

Lira sat on the elevated timber shelf above his workbench, her tail flicking lazily against the pine support beam. Her emerald forehead crystal glowed with a low, concentrated frequency, casting a soft green aura over the microscope’s stage as she processed the structural diffraction patterns in tandem with Elias’s own visual observations.

Jacob stepped up to the table, carrying a heavy cast-iron crucible using long, insulated steel tongs. The metal inside the crucible glowed a faint, dull cherry-red, but no heat radiated from it; the air three inches above the liquid metal remained as cool as the arctic breeze blowing through the open warehouse doors.

"It defies standard foundry logic, Elias," Jacob said, setting the crucible down onto a heavy stone pad with a dull thud. "We brought this chunk up to twelve hundred degrees Celsius in the high-draft coke furnace. The internal temperature of the alloy rose, but its thermal conductivity dropped to zero. It holds heat inside its molecular structure like a sealed vault. You can hold the bottom of a red-hot ingot in your bare palm without feeling a warm twitch."

"It isn’t an alloy in the traditional sense, Jacob," Elias said without lifting his eye from the microscope eyepiece. "Look at the edge geometry. Standard metals, iron, copper, nickel, form crystalline grain boundaries as they cool from a melt, this material has no grain boundaries, it is a solid-state molecular lattice, arranged in alternating layers of carbon-nanotube chains and dense bismuth-telluride matrices."

Marcus hurried over, a thick leather-bound ledger balanced precariously on his forearm while his quill darted across a sheet of grid paper. His spectacles were fogged with condensation from the damp sea air, requiring him to constantly tilt his head back to see through the lower half of his lenses.

"I’ve finished translating the field logs from the Cape Frost telegraph tower," Marcus reported, his voice tight with restrained academic excitement. "Before the blue ice dome covered the station, the chief telegrapher managed to record thirty minutes of low-frequency radio emissions coming from the lead vessel’s central pyramid."

"A signal structure?" Elias asked, finally stepping back from the microscope and wiping his fingers with a clean linen cloth.

"Not just a signal, a continuous, repeating telemetry broadcast," Marcus said, laying the grid paper flat on the table. "It wasn’t aimed at our coastal towers, nor was it transmitting to the other two ships in the bay. The signal was beamed at a high angle of elevation, directly toward the polar ice cap, specifically, toward the deep interior of the Northern Barren, six hundred miles beyond the reach of our current rail lines."

Jacob frowned, crossing his massive arms over his leather apron. "A base station? You’re saying those three ships were just an advance scouting party?"

"Worse," Marcus replied, pointing to a series of mathematical spikes drawn along the bottom of the ledger page. "The energy signature recorded during the final ten seconds, right before Elias fired the resonance beam, showed a massive spike in signal density. They didn’t just report their location; they transmitted our entire technical profile. They sent the thermal signature of our internal combustion engines, the voltage of our radio relays, and the exact coordinates of our northern foundries."

Silence settled over the staging bay, punctuated only by the distant, rhythmic clack-clack-clack of a switching locomotive moving empty flatcars through the yards outside.

Elias walked over to the tall arched window overlooking the harbor, out in the deep channel, the Calderholt Mark VI locomotive was idling on a pier spur, its sleek nickel-steel body reflecting the pale northern sunlight. Thin, translucent wisps of heat rose from its exhaust stacks as the automated petroleum injectors maintained boiler-less internal readiness.

"They aren’t invaders in the traditional sense," Elias said, his golden eyes reflecting the grey expanse of the Arctic Ocean. "A warlord invades because he wants land, titles, or gold. Mages invade because they want to control the flow of mana and enforce political obedience. But these entities operate purely on thermodynamic calculus. To them, our industrial expansion is an unauthorized expenditure of energy in a closed system."

"So how do they react?" Jacob asked, picking up a heavy steel file and absently running it across an iron bar, sending a shower of bright sparks onto the concrete floor.

"They attempt to restore equilibrium," Elias stated calmly. "And in their physics, equilibrium means reducing our operating temperature to absolute zero."

He turned back to the workbench, grabbing a sheet of blank drafting paper and a heavy graphite pencil.

"Marcus, send a coded wire to the Central Assembly in Sol-Aethel. Instruct them to double the production quotas at the Oakhaven steel works and redirect all shipments of high-purity aluminum and copper to the Calderholt manufacturing yards."

"And the Southern Ridge oil fields?" Marcus asked, his quill already poised over his notepad.

"Increase the pumping capacity at the Obsidian Basin by four hundred percent," Elias commanded smoothly. "We need millions of gallons of high-octane aviation spirit and refined diesel stored in regional depots across the northern provinces. Steam power built our foundation, but steam is too slow and too heavy for what comes next."
