Chapter 34: Unknown Creature
The hunt stretched across hours, each kill blending into the next. Gray drifted through the volcanic slope like a ghost, his Hollow Cloak rendering him invisible, his enhanced senses painting the world in vibrations and electrical fields. Piston Shrimp after Piston Shrimp fell to his ambushes — Neurotoxic Drift descending like an invisible shroud, Overcharge finishing what the venom started.
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Cavitation Bubble" (3/5)]
The third fragment dropped from a large male with an oversized claw, its carapace scarred from territorial battles. Gray absorbed its corpse and kept moving.
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Cavitation Bubble" (4/5)]
The fourth came from a female guarding a burrow full of eggs. She fought harder than the others, her claw firing blindly into the dark, cavitation blasts cratering the volcanic rock around her. Gray took a glancing hit — the shockwave rippling through his bell margim but Overcharge ended the fight before she could fire again.
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Cavitation Bubble" (5/5)]
[Trait Complete! Cavitation Bubble will be available as an evolution option at Level 20.]
’See you at Level 20, I guess.’
He absorbed the shrimp’s corpse and continued hunting. The Piston Shrimp population was thinning, he’d killed so many that the survivors had learned to hide deeper in their burrows but his improved LUK was paying off. Two more Drill Snails fell to Neurotoxic Drift, their armored shells no protection against venom that seeped through every gap.

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Crystalline Dentition" (4/5)]
He found the last Drill Snail near the base of the slope, its massive shell wedged between two volcanic boulders. It was the largest he’d seen — nearly four feet across, its iron-grey shell thick with mineral deposits that spoke of decades of growth. Its radula scraped algae from the rock with the same patient rhythm as all the others, completely unaware of the translucent predator descending toward it.
Neurotoxic Drift seeped through the cracks in its shell. Overcharge delivered the killing stroke.

[Trait Complete! Crystalline Dentition will be available as an evolution option at Level 20.]
’Done. Two complete traits waiting for Level 20. Cavitation Bubble for ranged physical damage, Crystalline Dentition for armor penetration.’
He absorbed the snail’s corpse, the largest meal he’d had in days and checked his status.
EXP to Next Level: 83%
’Eighty-three percent. So close to Level 12. But I’ve been hunting for hours. I need rest.’
He turned back toward the kelp forest, his senses sweeping the water ahead. The Mawback Hunter was still out there somewhere — he could feel the faint, distant rumble of something massive moving through the deep. But it wasn’t close, and he was too exhausted to care.
The rock shelf overhang came into view, its dark crevice barely visible against the volcanic stone. Gray squeezed through the narrow gap and settled into the hollow space beneath the overhanging rock. The sand was cold against his bell, and the stone above him felt solid and reassuring.
[LOCATION DISCOVERED: ROCK SHELF OVERHANG]
[This location is marginally suitable for rest. Would you like to designate it as a temporary shelter?]
’Yes.’
[SHELTER DESIGNATED: ROCK SHELF OVERHANG]
[Resting in a designated shelter increases HP and MP regeneration by 20%.]
The regeneration effect activated. Gray felt the warmth spreading through his body as his HP began to tick upward. His MP, nearly depleted from hours of hunting, started its slow climb toward full.
He pulled up his final status for the day.

His tentacles relaxed against the sandy floor. The regeneration bonus continued its slow, steady work — HP climbing point by point, MP refilling at a glacial pace. Outside the overhang, the kelp forest swayed with the rhythm of the deep. Distant vibrations flickered at the edge of his perception, but nothing approached.
Slowly, exhaustion overtook him. His bell softened, his tentacles went slack, and his awareness faded into a dreamless dark.
Gray woke to a vibration that shook the stone above him.
It started as a low thrum at the edge of his perception, a pressure more than a sound, seeping through the volcanic rock like a warning. His tentacles snapped to attention before his mind fully woke, eight translucent ribbons reading the water with reflexive urgency.
Something was moving above the kelp forest.
He pressed himself flat against the sandy floor of the overhang, his Hollow Cloak already active, his body nearly invisible against the dark stone. The vibration grew stronger — a deep, rhythmic pulse that resonated through his entire body.
Thrum. Thrum. Thrum.
He edged toward the overhang’s entrance and peered upward through the narrow gap in the stone. The kelp fronds above him swayed violently, their thick stalks bending under a pressure they hadn’t evolved to withstand. Small creatures scattered in every direction — Silver-Fin Runners darting for cover, crabs burying themselves in the sand, even a Morrath slithering into the nearest crevice with uncharacteristic panic.
Then the shadow passed overhead.
It blotted out what little ambient light filtered down from the surface. The creature was enormous — far larger than the juvenile Mawback Hunter he’d escaped. Larger than the Abyssal that had nearly found him in the overhang. Its body stretched across his entire field of view, a living eclipse that turned the water above the kelp forest black.
Gray caught glimpses through the swaying fronds. A belly of pale, scarred hide. Fins that spanned wider than his entire hunting territory. A tail that moved with the slow, measured rhythm of something that had never known fear.
His system flickered. The identification window materialized, but the text was fractured — worse than anything he’d seen.

The creature passed slowly, its massive body sliding through the water above the kelp forest like a continent drifting. It took nearly a full minute for the tail to pass out of view.
The vibrations faded gradually — until finally it merged with the background noise of the deep ocean and disappeared.
Gray stayed frozen for a long moment after.
Then he let out a pulse that wasn’t physical — a release of tension that rippled through his entire body.
"...The ocean," he thought, his mental voice quiet with something between fear and wonder, "is far more terrifying than anything I ever imagined."
He watched the last swaying fronds settle back into their gentle rhythm. The smaller creatures were already emerging from their hiding places, their simple brains already forgetting the shadow that had passed overhead.
"But it’s also thrilling."
