The SSS-Rank Jellyfish's Growth System

Chapter 33: Luck Investment

Gray drifted through the kelp forest, his senses extended, his movements slow and deliberate. The encounter with the Mawback Hunter had left him rattled, but he couldn’t afford to hide forever.

He hunted cautiously, staying close to cover, never lingering in open water for more than a few seconds. The volcanic slope yielded three more Piston Shrimp over the next hour—each one isolated, each one ambushed from behind with Neurotoxic Drift and Overcharge. None of them saw him coming.

But the fragments didn’t drop.

’Three kills. Zero fragments. My luck is still absolute garbage.’

He absorbed the corpses and checked his EXP. The bar sat at 94% toward Level 11. One more kill would push him over.

He found a fourth Piston Shrimp near the base of the slope, half-buried in its burrow. Neurotoxic Drift descended like an invisible fog. The shrimp died without ever knowing what killed it.

[LEVEL UP!]

[You are now Level 11.]

[10 Stat Points available for distribution.]

[2 Skill Point available.]

Five points into LUK.

[LUK: 0 → 5]

[Drop rates slightly increased. Favorable environmental events are now marginally more likely.]

He paused, considering the remaining five points. SPD was already high at 39. DEF was decent at 26. INT boosted his skill damage and MP pool, which mattered for Neurotoxic Drift and EMP Shroud. But he’d just spent half his points on luck. He needed to keep his combat stats competitive.

Three points into SPD.

[SPD: 39 → 42]

Two points into INT.

[INT: 38 → 40]

[MP: 300 → 320]

He confirmed the allocation and checked his updated status.

Gray staring at the two remaining Skill Points. The choice was obvious.

’Overcharge. The damage is good, but fifty-eight percent stun chance isn’t a guarantee. I need more.’

He allocated both points.

Skill Points: 2 → 0

[OVERCHARGE — Lv. 2 → Lv. 4]

The sensation came instantly. The bioelectric organ inside his bell pulsed hot, every electricity-generating cell dividing and reinforcing itself. His tentacles trembled, and tiny blue-white sparks leaped between their tips like miniature lightning.

[Damage: 30-40 → 38-48]

[Stun chance: 58% → 68%]

[Stun duration: 2 seconds → 3 seconds]

[Self-damage on activation: 4% → 3%]

He flexed his tentacles, watching sparks of electricity dance between their tips.

’If something gets close enough to touch me, it’s not walking away.’

He closed the skill menu. The residual electricity still tingled through his body, a pleasant hum beneath his translucent flesh.

’Time to see what this new Overcharge can do.’

Gray drifted through the volcanic slope, his senses sweeping the rocky terrain for any sign of his prey. Three Piston Shrimp kills since his level-up, and finally a fragment had dropped.

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Cavitation Bubble" (2/5)]

’YES! Finally! LUK 5 is paying off!’

He absorbed the shrimp’s corpse with renewed enthusiasm, his oral arms processing the chitin and flesh in seconds.

He pulsed onward, Hollow Cloak rendering him invisible against the dark water. The slope stretched before him, pocketed with burrows and crevices. His enhanced senses picked up the electrical fields of dozens of small creatures but no Piston Shrimp.

Then he found two in quick succession.

The first was a small one, barely six inches long, its oversized claw still soft from a recent molt. It never sensed him. Neurotoxic Drift descended like an invisible shroud, and the shrimp died before the symptom delay even finished.

[PISTON SHRIMP DEFEATED — 85 EXP]

The second was larger, more aggressive. It sensed something wrong just before the venom hit and fired its claw blindly into the dark. The cavitation blast shot past Gray’s bell, close enough that he felt the pressure wave ripple through his translucent flesh. He responded with Overcharge, point-blank, and the electricity arced through the shrimp’s body in a single, devastating burst.

[OVERCHARGE — 42 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP DEFEATED — 95 EXP]

’Nothing. LUK 5 is better than LUK 0, but it’s still not a guarantee.’

He absorbed the corpses anyway. The EXP was still progress. The biomass kept his hunger in check. And every dead shrimp was one less thing in this ocean that could shoot him through the water with a plasma cannon.

He was about to move on when a new vibration caught his attention.

It was coming from behind a cluster of volcanic boulders to his left — a grinding crunch, stone against stone, interspersed with sharp, percussive cracks.

Gray drifted closer, Hollow Cloak swallowing his approach. He peered around the edge of a boulder and saw them.

The Iron-Shell Drill Snail was massive — nearly three feet across, its dark iron-grey shell spiraling into a cone of ridged armor. Its muscular foot gripped the volcanic rock, and its radula scraped algae from the stone with that same methodical grinding he’d heard from the first one. Its thick tentacles probed the water with slow, blind sweeps.

But it wasn’t alone.

Hovering above the snail was a fish.

It was maybe two feet long, its body compressed laterally into a flat, blade-like shape. Its scales were a sickly grey-green, mottled with patches of darker pigmentation that seemed to shift and writhe as Gray watched. Its head was the worst part — blunt and heavy, built like a battering ram. Its mouth was a circular, lamprey-like orifice ringed with rows of triangular teeth that pointed inward toward a muscular throat. Behind those teeth, partially visible through the translucent flesh of its gullet, were a second set of jaws — pharyngeal teeth, like those of a moray eel, designed to grip and crush.

Its eyes were small and black, set deep in bony sockets. A single lure dangled from its forehead, a fleshy appendage tipped with a phosphorescent bulb that pulsed with a sickly yellow glow.

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — Level 14]

HP: 220 / 220

Threat Level: HIGH

« Analysis »

A specialized molluscivore found in rocky mid-depth environments. The Crushgape Dreadmaw’s jaw structure is uniquely adapted for cracking open armored prey — its outer circular jaw grips the shell, while its inner pharyngeal jaws extend forward to crush and extract the soft tissue within. Its blunt, reinforced skull can withstand repeated impacts against stone and shell.

Behavior: Patient. Methodical. The Dreadmaw will circle armored prey for minutes before striking, searching for the optimal angle of attack. Once committed, it does not retreat.

Weakness: Slow to change direction once committed to an attack. Pharyngeal jaws take several seconds to retract after feeding. Vulnerable to attacks from directly above or below while its jaws are extended.

’It’s hunting my snail.’

The Dreadmaw circled the Iron-Shell Drill Snail with slow, patient strokes of its blade-like body. The snail had sensed danger — its muscular foot was already beginning to retract into its armored shell, the thick leathery operculum starting to close. But the snail was slow. The Dreadmaw was not.

The fish lunged.

Its circular mouth latched onto the snail’s operculum before it could fully seal. The outer teeth gripped the leathery door, and Gray heard the grinding crunch of the pharyngeal jaws extending. The snail’s shell vibrated with the impact, and a thin crack appeared along the operculum’s edge.

’No no no. That’s MY fragment.’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The invisible cloud of venom descended over the Dreadmaw, settling into its gills and seeping through its thin, mottled scales. Two seconds of symptom delay. The fish continued its attack, oblivious, its pharyngeal jaws grinding against the snail’s operculum.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 209 / 220]

The Dreadmaw jolted. Its circular mouth detached from the snail, and its small black eyes darted wildly. It couldn’t see Gray, had no idea where the attack had come from — but it could feel the venom burning through its system.

Gray pulsed forward, forty-two SPD closing the gap in a heartbeat, and activated Overcharge. His tentacles wrapped around the Dreadmaw’s blade-like body, and the electricity arced directly into its flesh.

[OVERCHARGE — 45 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 164 / 220]

[STUN — 3 SECONDS]

The Dreadmaw’s body locked rigid. Its circular jaw gaped open, pharyngeal teeth still half-extended, frozen mid-crush. Its lure dangled limp, the phosphorescent bulb flickering erratically.

Gray deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, layering fresh venom over the stunned predator.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 142 / 220]

The stun broke. The Dreadmaw thrashed, its blade-like body twisting in the water. It tried to flee, but the venom was already in its system, the damage ticks continuing. Gray pursued, keeping the creature enveloped in the neurotoxic cloud.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 122 / 220]

The Dreadmaw turned to fight. Its circular mouth gaped open, inner jaws extending toward Gray with a grinding crunch. The teeth caught his bell margin and tore.

[-18 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 327 / 345]

’That’s all you’ve got?’

He wrapped his tentacles around the Dreadmaw’s head and activated Overcharge a second time. The electricity surged through his body and into the fish’s skull, point-blank, no escape.

[OVERCHARGE — 48 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 74 / 220]

[STUN — 3 SECONDS]

The Dreadmaw seized again. Its inner jaws retracted involuntarily, pharyngeal teeth grinding against each other. Its small black eyes went glassy, and the phosphorescent lure on its forehead flickered and died.

Gray deployed Neurotoxic Drift one final time. The venom sank into the Dreadmaw’s gills, into its open mouth, into the soft tissue behind its eyes.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 41 / 220]

The stun broke, but the Dreadmaw was already dying. Its movements were weak, uncoordinated. It tried to swim, but its blade-like body listed sideways, one fin beating slower than the other. Gray drifted above it, watching the damage ticks count down.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 31 / 220]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 20 / 220]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW — HP: 8 / 220]

The Dreadmaw’s lure flickered one final time. Its small black eyes stared upward at the predator it had never seen, the translucent ghost that had killed it from nowhere.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]

[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW DEFEATED — 130 EXP]

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Pharyngeal Jaw Structure" (1/5)]

[New Trait Discovered!]

[PHARYNGEAL JAW STRUCTURE — Preview]

« Analysis »

A rare physical trait derived from creatures with secondary jaw mechanisms. Enhances the user’s ability to grip, crush, and process armored prey through the development of an internal jaw structure.

Effect at Completion: +10% Armor Penetration on all physical attacks. Grants a new active skill — [Grip Jaw]. Medium-range physical grapple that holds targets in place and deals crushing damage over time.

Gray absorbed the Dreadmaw’s corpse, his oral arms processing the dense, muscular flesh.

’Pharyngeal Jaw Structure. Not what I was hunting for, but... armor penetration and a grapple skill. That’s useful. That’s really useful.’

He turned toward the Iron-Shell Drill Snail.

The snail had retreated fully into its shell during the fight. Its operculum was sealed tight, a cracked but still intact door of leathery flesh.

Gray drifted closer. Neurotoxic Drift seeped through the cracks in the operculum, through the gaps between mantle and shell, into the soft body within. The damage ticks began.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 270 / 280]

The venom was already inside its shell, already spreading through its tissues. Gray wrapped his tentacles around the shell and waited.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]

The operculum sagged. The snail was weakening. Its muscular control was failing, the leathery door loosening inch by inch.

Gray reached inside with his tentacles and found the soft flesh within.

[OVERCHARGE — 46 DAMAGE]

[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL DEFEATED — 110 EXP]

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Crystalline Dentition" (2/5)]

He absorbed the corpse, extracting every fragment of usable material. The empty shell drifted slowly to the volcanic rock below, joining the remnants of the Dreadmaw.

Gray hung in the water, his body humming with residual electricity and satisfaction.

He checked his EXP bar. The Dreadmaw and the snail had pushed him to 48% toward Level 12.

’Not a bad haul. But still a long way to go.’
