Chapter 37: The First Terror

Gray stared at the creature circling him, its serpentine body coiling through the water with predatory grace.

’You’ve got to be kidding me.’

His tentacles spread wide, reading every vibration as the Lamprey completed its first slow circuit. The creature’s pale eyes never left him. Its circular maw twitched, rows of needle teeth glinting in the faint green phosphorescence of its fins.

’You tried to eat me when I couldn’t fight back. And YOU’RE the one who wants a rematch?’

The Lamprey’s plates rattled. It saw the sparks arcing between his tentacles.

’Fine. I’ll give you your rematch.’

He pulled up his status screen with a thought. Four Skill Points available. He’d been saving them, unsure where to invest. The Lamprey made the decision for him.

’But you should know something first.’

Two points into Neurotoxic Drift.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — Lv. 3 → Lv. 5]

[Damage per second: 8-12 → 12-16]

[Paralyze chance: 18% → 26%]

[Symptom delay: 2 seconds → 1 second]

The venom glands along his tentacles pulsed hot, each nematocyst sac swelling with fresh potency. The neurotoxin grew denser and more concentrated.

Two points into Overcharge.

[OVERCHARGE — Lv. 4 → Lv. 6]

[Damage: 38-48 → 50-62]

[Stun chance: 68% → 78%]

[Stun duration: 3 seconds → 4 seconds]

His bioelectric organ surged. Sparks leaped between his tentacles in brilliant blue-white arcs, and the water around him sizzled with contained power. The Lamprey paused mid-circuit, its pale eyes narrowing at the sudden electrical display.

’I’m not the same jellyfish you met before.’

The Lamprey lunged.

Gray was already moving. His body shot sideways the instant the Lamprey’s muscles tensed, the creature’s circular maw snapping shut on empty water. The bony plates along its spine rattled as it twisted, whipping its serpentine body around for a second strike. Gray pulsed upward, felt the rush of displaced water as those needle teeth grazed his trailing tentacles.

’You’re faster than before. But so am I.’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The invisible cloud spread through the water, denser and more potent than ever before. One second of symptom delay—then the damage ticks began.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 14 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 366 / 380]

The Lamprey convulsed. Its pale eyes widened, and a sound like grinding glass vibrated through the water—its version of a pained snarl. The venom was already seeping through its gills, into the gaps between its bony plates, into the soft tissue beneath.

[PARALYZE — RESISTED]

’It doesn’t matter. The venom’s already inside you. I can wait.’

The Lamprey recovered faster than he’d expected. It didn’t retreat to reassess the way other predators did. It lunged again, more aggressive and desperate. The secondary crushing plates behind its primary teeth ground together with a sound like breaking bones.

Gray pulsed backward, but the Lamprey anticipated his dodge—just like the Dreadmaw had. Its serpentine body coiled and struck from an unexpected angle, the bony plates along its flank slamming into his bell.

[-28 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 254 / 345]

He spun with the impact, letting the momentum carry him out of range. His tentacles lashed out as he passed, nematocysts firing on contact.

’All that evolution, and you still can’t see what’s killing you.’

The Lamprey circled again. Its sickly green phosphorescence flickered—a tell. Gray had noticed it during their first fight, but he’d been too panicked to process it. The glow intensified before every lunge. A split-second warning.

The glow flared. Gray pulsed left. The Lamprey shot past, its maw snapping on empty water.

’You flare before every lunge. Did you think I wouldn’t notice?’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, layering fresh venom over the creature’s flank. The damage ticks resumed.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 15 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 13 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 338 / 380]

[PARALYZE — PROC!]

The Lamprey’s body locked rigid. Its serpentine form seized mid-coil, every muscle frozen. The pale eyes went glassy, the circular maw gaping open, needle teeth twitching. Four seconds of paralysis—his new Overcharge stun duration, but applied through venom instead of electricity.

’There we go.’

He didn’t let the moment slip. He wrapped his tentacles around the Lamprey’s head and activated Overcharge. The electricity erupted at point-blank range, arcing directly into the creature’s open mouth, through its gills, into its very core.

[OVERCHARGE — 58 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 280 / 380]

[STUN — 4 SECONDS]

The paralysis and stun overlapped, the Lamprey’s body caught in a cascade of locked muscles and overloaded nerves. Its green phosphorescence flickered erratically. Its bony plates rattled with involuntary spasms.

Gray held on. Neurotoxic Drift deployed again, the venom cloud enveloping them both. The damage stacked—venom in its gills, electricity in its nerves.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 14 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 16 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 250 / 380]

The stun broke. The Lamprey thrashed, its serpentine body coiling and uncoiling with wild, desperate strength. One of its venomous spines caught Gray across the bell margin.

[-22 HP]

[TOXIN — 4 damage over 5 seconds]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 232 / 345]

’You’ve got venom too. Great. I’ll add it to my collection after I kill you.’

He tightened his grip. His tentacles wrapped around the Lamprey’s throat, around its bony plates, around the base of its skull. He wasn’t letting go.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 15 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 223 / 380]

The Lamprey’s thrashing grew weaker. Its green phosphorescence dimmed. The needle teeth still gnashed, the crushing plates still ground together, but the creature was running out of fight. It had spent everything on that first aggressive rush, and Gray had weathered it.

’You never stood a chance.’

Overcharge came off cooldown. He activated it without hesitation.

[OVERCHARGE — 61 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 162 / 380]

[STUN — 4 SECONDS]

The Lamprey seized again. Its pale eyes rolled back. Its circular maw gaped open in a silent scream.

He leaned closer to the paralyzed creature, his bell inches from its frozen eyes.

’Not this time.’

The Neurotoxic Drift continued its relentless work. Tick after tick, the venom eating through the Lamprey’s HP bar. The stun ended, but the creature could barely move. Its coils were sluggish. Its lunges were slow. The predator that had once nearly killed him in seconds was now dying by inches.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 13 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 16 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 133 / 380]

The Lamprey tried one final attack—a desperate lunge with the last of its strength. Gray didn’t dodge. He let it come. The circular maw closed on his bell margin, needle teeth sinking deep.

[-34 HP]

[TOXIN — 4 damage over 5 seconds]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 198 / 345]

He didn’t flinch.

’There. You got your bite in. Now it’s my turn.’

He wrapped every tentacle around the Lamprey’s head. Overcharge. Neurotoxic Drift. The electricity and venom working together, a symphony of death.

[OVERCHARGE — 59 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 14 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 60 / 380]

The Lamprey’s coils went slack. Its green phosphorescence faded to a dull, sickly flicker.

’You were my first nightmare in this ocean. Now you’re just another corpse.’

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 15 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 13 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY — HP: 32 / 380]

One final Overcharge. The electricity surged through his tentacles and into the Lamprey’s body, lighting it from within. The bony plates glowed with blue-white heat. The needle teeth sparked. The pale eyes flared brilliant white—then went dark.

[OVERCHARGE — 62 DAMAGE]

[NIGHTMARE LAMPREY DEFEATED — 450 EXP]

The massive serpentine body drifted limp in the water. Gray held on for a moment longer, making sure it was dead. Then he released his grip and let the corpse float free.

[LEVEL UP!]

[You are now Level 14.]

[10 Stat Points available for distribution.]

[2 Skill Points available.]

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Venomous Spines" (1/3)]

[New Trait Discovered!]

[VENOMOUS SPINES — Preview]

« Analysis »

A rare offensive trait derived from creatures with venom-delivering spines. Integrates microscopic, venom-tipped spines into the user’s tentacles and bell margin, adding a passive physical damage component to all contact-based attacks. The venom causes lingering damage and gradually weakens the target’s resistance to other toxins.

Effect at Completion: All physical contact deals an additional 5-10 piercing damage. Targets struck by contact attacks suffer [Toxin Vulnerability], increasing damage taken from all venom-based skills by 25% for 10 seconds.

The system’s warmth washed through him, but Gray barely noticed. He was staring at the corpse of the creature that had nearly killed him on his first day in this ocean.

’We’ve both come a long way.’

He absorbed the corpse slowly, his oral arms processing the dense, muscular flesh. The venom sacs along its spine dissolved against his feeding surface, and the Trait Fragment notification pulsed softly in the corner of his vision.

’But I came further.’
