Chapter 38: The Wrong Crevice
Gray drifted near the Lamprey’s corpse, his body still humming with residual electricity.
’I got lucky.’
He watched the last traces of the creature dissolve against his feeding surface. The Lamprey had been vulnerable to both venom and electricity — his two damage types. If it had resisted either one, the fight would have gone very differently.
’I can’t rely on luck. I need coverage. Multiple damage types. Multiple ways to kill.’
He pulled up his status screen. Ten stat points and two skill points waiting. The Lamprey fight had reinforced what he already knew — speed was survival, intelligence was killing power. He allocated without hesitation.
Seven points into SPD.
[SPD: 47 → 54]
Three points into INT.
[INT: 45 → 48]
[MP: 370 → 400]
He confirmed the allocation and moved to skills. Two points into EMP Shroud.
[EMP SHROUD — Lv. 3 → Lv. 5]
[Cooldown: 60 seconds → 45 seconds]
[Duration: 6 seconds → 8 seconds]
[MP Cost: 15 → 12]
’Eight seconds of sensory blackout. Forty-five second cooldown. That’s enough to escape almost anything.’
He closed the status screen.
’Pharyngeal Jaw Structure. Just one more fragment.’
He turned toward the volcanic slope and began the hunt.
The next hours blurred into the familiar rhythm of the grind. He found one near the base of the slope, a medium-sized specimen feeding on a cracked Drill Snail shell. Neurotoxic Drift descended. Overcharge finished it.
[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW DEFEATED — 130 EXP]
No drop.
He absorbed the corpse and kept moving.
The second Dreadmaw was young. Its scales were still smooth, its lure bright and undamaged. It attacked the moment it sensed Gray’s electrical field.
The aggression was its downfall. Gray sidestepped the lunge easily, and the Dreadmaw’s momentum carried it past him. Before it could turn, his tentacles were around its throat. Overcharge detonated at point-blank range.
[CRUSHGAPE DREADMAW DEFEATED — 110 EXP]
’Youth and enthusiasm. No match for experience.’
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Pharyngeal Jaw Structure" (5/5)]
[Trait Complete! Pharyngeal Jaw Structure will be available as an evolution option at Level 20.]
He absorbed its corpse, his oral arms processing the dense flesh.
’Done.’
He pulled up his status, reviewing the completed list.
Completed Traits (Waiting for Evolution):
· Cavitation Bubble (5/5) — Ranged physical attack, ignores 20% DEF
· Crystalline Dentition (5/5) — +30% armor penetration, piercing skill
· Pharyngeal Jaw Structure (5/5) — Grapple skill, +10% armor penetration
Pending Traits:
· Reactive Agility (1/3)
· Venomous Spines (1/3)
’That’s a real arsenal. Ranged physical damage, armor penetration, and a grapple. Combined with Neurotoxic Drift and Overcharge, I’ll have five different ways to kill something.’
In the distance, a school of Silver-Fin Runners darted through the open blue, their silver bodies catching the faint ambient light and scattering it like mirrors. They moved in their usual loose formation, feeding on a cloud of plankton that drifted near the volcanic slope.
Gray watched them for a long moment. His bell tightened with frustration.
’I’m so sick of hunting that fish.’
He pulsed toward the school, Hollow Cloak swallowing his approach. The Runners continued their feeding, oblivious.
’But I need that trait. So here we are. Again.’
He positioned himself below the school, his eight translucent tentacles spreading like a net. The Runners darted and weaved above him, their electrical fields flickering in his enhanced senses.
’LUK 15. You cost me ten stat points. Please tell me you’re worth it.’
He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The invisible cloud rose through the water, silent and undetectable. The Runners kept feeding. Then the damage ticks began.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 14 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 13 DAMAGE]
Two Runners jolted simultaneously. The school scattered — silver bodies darting in every direction. But the two that had taken the venom were already slowing, their sleek forms listing sideways as the neurotoxin burned through their systems.
Gray targeted the closer one. He closed the gap in a heartbeat. Overcharge flared.
[OVERCHARGE — 55 DAMAGE]
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER DEFEATED — 30 EXP]
No fragment. He absorbed the corpse and turned toward the second Runner. It was trying to flee, its movements sluggish, its electrical field flickering erratically. He caught it near the kelp line and ended it with a quick pulse of electricity.
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER DEFEATED — 30 EXP]
Still nothing.
The next hour was a blur of silver scales and empty notifications.
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
Nope.
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
Nothing.
His frustration mounted. His tentacles sparked with involuntary electricity. He killed a Spine-Fin Darter that crossed his path out of pure spite, absorbed its corpse without checking for fragments, and kept hunting. Another school of Runners. Another ambush. Another empty drop.
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
’Fifteen Luck. FIFTEEN. I could have put those points into SPD or INT. I could have been faster. Stronger. But no — I invested in luck, and this is what I get.’
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
’Is fifteen not enough? Do I need twenty? Thirty? Do I need to max out the stat before the game decides to give me a single fragment?’
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Reactive Agility" (2/3)]
Gray stopped mid-pulse. The notification glowed in the corner of his vision.
’Finally! One more. Just one more.’
He absorbed the Runner’s corpse with something approaching gratitude, then turned back toward the open water. The schools were thinning — he’d killed so many Runners that the survivors had learned to avoid the western edge entirely. He had to range further out, into deeper water, to find them.
The next school was smaller. Three Runners, they sensed him before he could deploy Neurotoxic Drift and scattered. Gray chased the slowest one and kill it near the volcanic slope.
[Silver-Fin Runner Defeated — 30 EXP]
Nothing.
’One more. Just one more fragment. Please.’
He found the last school near the edge of his sensory range. Five Runners, feeding on a cloud of krill that had drifted down from the surface. Gray approached from below, his Hollow Cloak rendering him invisible, his tentacles spread wide.
Neurotoxic Drift deployed. The venom rose. The Runners kept feeding.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 15 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]
Two of them jolted. The school scattered. Gray targeted the larger one and ran it down.
[OVERCHARGE — 57 DAMAGE]
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER DEFEATED — 30 EXP]
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Reactive Agility" (3/3)]
[Trait Complete! Reactive Agility will be available as an evolution option at Level 20.]
’Yes,’ he breathed, the word more feeling than thought. ’It actually completed. I had to hunt half the damn ocean to do it, but... worth it.’
He pulled up his status, letting the satisfaction settle through his bell.
Pending Traits:
· Venomous Spines (1/3)
’Only the Venomous Spines trait is left. That means I need to hunt something similar, or find another Lamprey.’
He turned away from the western edge and pulsed toward the deeper waters beyond the volcanic slope. His Hollow Cloak rendered him nearly invisible, his enhanced senses sweeping the dark water for any sign of his prey.
He didn’t have to search long.
A flicker of movement caught his attention near a cluster of volcanic boulders. Something small and sinuous, its body lined with faint bioluminescent stripes that pulsed with a sickly yellow-green glow. It moved with a nervous, darting rhythm, never staying still for more than a second.
Gray drifted closer, his tentacles reading its vibrations. The creature was maybe a foot long, its body eel-like but compressed laterally like a ribbon. Tiny spines ran along its dorsal ridge, each one tipped with a droplet of something that glistened in the faint light. Its head was narrow, almost delicate, with two oversized eyes that swiveled independently, scanning the water in every direction at once.
[STRIPED SPINE EEL — JUVENILE]
Level: 9
HP: 55 / 55
Threat Level: LOW
« Analysis »
A juvenile specimen of the Striped Spine Eel lineage. Even at this age, its dorsal spines produce a potent neurotoxin capable of causing localized paralysis in much larger creatures. The bioluminescent stripes serve as a warning to potential predators — this creature is dangerous to eat.
Behavior: Extremely skittish. Relies on speed and maneuverability to escape threats. Will only use its venom defensively.
Weakness: Fragile. Low HP. Vulnerable to area attacks that don’t require precise aiming.
’This is exactly what I need for Venomous Spines.’
He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The invisible cloud spread through the water—
The juvenile Spine Eel bolted.
It didn’t wait for the venom to reach it. It didn’t pause to assess the threat. The moment the first microscopic particle of neurotoxin touched its lateral line, it shot away through the water like a ribbon caught in a current.
’What the—’
Gray pulsed after it, his speed closing the gap rapidly. His tentacles reached toward its retreating form—
The Spine Eel darted between two volcanic boulders and vanished into a narrow crevice.
Gray stopped at the entrance. The gap was barely visible, a dark slit in the volcanic rock that angled downward into the slope. His tentacles probed the opening. It was too tight for his bell to fit comfortably. But the eel had gone through, and he wasn’t about to let his prey escape.
’You’re not getting away that easily.’
He compressed his bell and squeezed through the crevice.
The passage twisted downward, narrowing in places until the volcanic stone scraped against his bell margin. His Hollow Cloak dimmed involuntarily as he focused on navigating the tight space. The faint bioluminescent glow of the juvenile eel flickered ahead of him, always just around the next bend.
Then the passage opened.
Gray drifted out of the crevice and into a vast underground cavern. The space was enormous — easily fifty feet across, its ceiling lost in darkness, its walls lined with phosphorescent fungi that cast the entire chamber in a pale blue-green glow. Stalactites hung from above like stone teeth. Stalagmites rose from the floor in twisted, organic shapes. The water here was still and cold, untouched by the currents of the open ocean.
And the cavern was full of Striped Spine Eels.
They covered every surface. The walls. The floor. The stalagmites. Hundreds of them, their sinuous bodies coiled around the stone formations, their bioluminescent stripes pulsing in synchronized waves of yellow-green light.
In the center of the cavern, coiled around a massive stalagmite like a guardian serpent, was the largest eel he’d ever seen. Fifteen feet from snout to tail, its body thick as a tree trunk, its stripes pulsing with a light so bright it cast shadows across the cavern walls. Its oversized eyes swiveled independently, scanning the chamber with patient awareness.
[STRIPED SPINE EEL — BROODMOTHER]
Level: 22
HP: 850 / 850
Threat Level: EXTREME
« Analysis »
The reproductive center of a Striped Spine Eel colony. The Broodmother is the oldest and most powerful member of its species in this region, capable of producing hundreds of offspring over its decades-long lifespan. Its neurotoxin is concentrated to a degree that can paralyze creatures many times its size.
WARNING: The Broodmother will not flee. It will defend its colony with lethal force.
Every eel in the cavern turned toward him.
The Broodmother’s massive head rose from its coil. Its stripes flared brilliant yellow-green. A sound rumbled through the water — deep and resonant, more vibration than noise.
Gray hovered at the entrance of the crevice, his escape route a narrow slit behind him, his path forward blocked by an army of venomous eels.
’Ah... fuck.’
