Chapter 52: Hypnotic Lure
Gray drifted through the glowing forest, his crystalline barbs clicking softly with each pulse of his bell.
’Time to find more prey.’
His enhanced senses swept the darkness. Predator’s Instinct hummed at the edge of his awareness, a constant low thrum of readiness. The glowing fronds swayed around him, their bioluminescent light casting pale blue shadows across the volcanic sand.
He found the first Trench Myriapod near a cluster of tube worms.
Its segmented body undulated through the water, dozens of clawed legs skittering against the stone. The creature’s antennae swept the current, searching for prey. It hadn’t sensed him yet — Hollow Cloak rendered him nearly invisible, and his new speed let him match its movements with ease.
He activated Abyssal Lance without hesitation. His body compressed, crystalline barbs aligning into a spearhead, and he launched. The Myriapod’s antennae twitched — it sensed him at the last moment — but it was already too late. The crystalline barbs impaled its segmented body, punching through the gaps in its armored plates.

The Myriapod shrieked, its dozens of legs flailing. It tried to burrow — its claws digging into the volcanic rock — but Gray wrapped four tentacles around its midsection and activated Grip Jaw. The muscular appendages locked tight, crushing the creature’s carapace with relentless pressure.

’You’re not burrowing away this time.’
The Myriapod’s mandibles sprayed corrosive enzyme in a desperate arc. Gray didn’t bother dodging. The crystalline armor along his bell margin absorbed most of the damage, and Venomous Riposte lashed out automatically, injecting concentrated neurotoxin into the creature’s head.

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 576 / 585]
[VENOMOUS RIPOSTE — ACTIVATED]
[TOXIN VULNERABILITY — 30% increased venom damage for 10 seconds]
’That all you got?’
He deployed Neurotoxic Drift directly into the Myriapod’s wounds. The venom seeped through the gaps in its armor, flooding its system.

The Myriapod’s legs scrabbled weakly. Its antennae drooped. One final Overcharge ended it.
[OVERCHARGE — 74 DAMAGE]
[TRENCH MYRIAPOD DEFEATED — 280 EXP]
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Rapid Burrowing" (2/5)]
Gray absorbed the corpse efficiently. The chitin dissolved against his feeding surface, and he felt the familiar warmth of the fragment settling into place.
’Let’s keep going.’
He found the second Myriapod an hour later, deeper in the glowing forest. This one was larger — nearly five feet long, its carapace thicker and more scarred. It was feeding on the remains of a silver dartfish, its mandibles grinding through scales and bone.
Gray didn’t bother with stealth. He wanted to test something.
The Myriapod sensed him coming. Its antennae snapped toward him, and its segmented body coiled into a defensive posture. The scythe-like maxillipeds spread wide, and the circular mouth ringed with needle teeth pulsed with that faint bioluminescent glow.
’You see me. Good. Let’s see how you handle a frontal assault.’
He activated Cavitation Pulse. The crystalline structures along his bell superheated the water, then released it in a focused jet of boiling liquid and crystal shrapnel. The Myriapod tried to dodge, but the pulse was too fast.
[CAVITATION PULSE — 48 DAMAGE]
[TRENCH MYRIAPOD — HP: 172 / 220]
[20% DEF PENETRATION — APPLIED]
The Myriapod screeched and burrowed. Its claws tore through the volcanic rock with frantic speed, its segmented body disappearing into the seafloor in a spray of debris. Gray extended his senses, tracking the creature’s vibrations through the stone.
’There you are.’
It circled beneath him, preparing to erupt from below — the same tactic that had nearly killed him in their first fight. But Gray’s Predator’s Instinct had already mapped its trajectory. He pulsed sideways just as the Myriapod exploded from the rock, its maxillipeds snapping at empty water.
’Predictable.’
He wrapped his tentacles around its exposed head and activated Overcharge at point-blank range.
[OVERCHARGE — 76 DAMAGE]
[TRENCH MYRIAPOD — HP: 96 / 220]
[STUN — 5 SECONDS]
The Myriapod seized, every segment locking rigid. Gray held on, deploying Neurotoxic Drift while the creature was helpless.

He absorbed the Myriapod’s corpse and continued hunting, his senses sweeping the darkness for familiar prey, when something new flickered at the edge of his perception.
A light. Soft and golden, unlike the cold blue-green glow of the forest.
He paused, his tentacles spreading wide to read the water. The light pulsed gently in the distance, rhythmic and soothing, like a heartbeat made visible. It was coming from beyond a ridge of volcanic rock, where the glowing fronds gave way to something different.
Curiosity tugged at him. He drifted closer.
The ridge dropped away into a small basin, maybe thirty feet across. The volcanic sand here was pale, almost white, and the water was warmer — a gentle thermal current rising from somewhere below. Strange sea plants covered the basin floor, their fronds delicate and lacy, shimmering with faint iridescence. They swayed in the current like dancers, their movements almost hypnotic.
And at the center of the basin, the source of the golden light.
It was a plant. A single, perfect bloom rising from a spiral of silver-green leaves. Its petals were translucent, like frosted glass, and they glowed with a warm, golden radiance that pulsed in that same slow, soothing rhythm. The light rippled outward in gentle waves, washing over the basin and everything in it.
Gray felt his bell relax. His tentacles loosened. The tension of hours of hunting began to melt away.
’That’s... beautiful...’
He drifted forward without realizing he was moving. The golden light filled his vision, warm and welcoming, promising rest. His thoughts slowed. His crystalline barbs stopped clicking. Predator’s Instinct dimmed to a whisper he could barely hear.
The light was so warm. So peaceful. He just wanted to get closer.
Just a little closer—
[WARNING: MENTAL COMPROMISE DETECTED]
[Effect: HYPNOTIC LURE — ACTIVE]
[DANGER: PREDATOR DETECTED]
Gray’s mind shattered back to awareness like ice cracking.
’What—’
He wrenched his gaze away from the golden light, his bell convulsing with sudden adrenaline. His tentacles snapped into defensive positions, crystalline barbs raised. His senses, which had gone soft and unfocused, sharpened back to full clarity.
The basin was not empty.
The strange sea plants that covered the floor were moving. Their delicate, lacy fronds extended toward him like grasping fingers, their tips glistening with droplets of some clear, viscous fluid. The iridescence on their leaves wasn’t natural bioluminescence — it was a lure. A disguise.
And beneath them, half-buried in the pale sand, something waited.
His electroreception mapped its shape — a massive, flattened body pressed against the seafloor, easily ten feet across. Its mottled, sandy-grey skin blended perfectly with the volcanic sediment. Its mouth was a wide, crescent-shaped slit that curved upward at the edges in a permanent, almost serene smile. Its eyes — two small, black orbs on short stalks — were fixed directly on him.
The golden bloom was growing from its forehead.
[ABYSSAL ANGLER FLORA — Level 27]
HP: 680 / 680
Threat Level: HIGH
« Analysis »
A rare ambush predator that has evolved a symbiotic relationship with a bioluminescent parasitic plant. The Abyssal Angler Flora uses the plant’s hypnotic golden bloom to lure prey into range. Once prey is within striking distance, the creature erupts from the sand and swallows it whole. The plant benefits by absorbing nutrients from the creature’s leftover meals.
WARNING: The golden bloom emits a continuous hypnotic aura. Mental resistance is required to maintain awareness within its area of effect. Prolonged exposure intensifies the effect.
Weakness: The golden bloom is sensitive to damage. Destroying it temporarily disables the hypnotic aura. The creature’s main body is slow to reposition once it reveals itself. Vulnerable to electrical attacks that bypass its sand camouflage.
Gray’s tentacles sparked with involuntary electricity.
’It almost had me. If the system hadn’t warned me—’
The Angler Flora’s smile widened. Its black eyes gleamed with patience. The golden bloom on its forehead pulsed brighter, and Gray felt the hypnotic pull intensify. He forced his focus onto his electroreception, mapping the creature’s body through the sand instead of looking at the light.
’That’s no flower. That’s an anglerfish with a gardening hobby.’
The creature shifted beneath the sand. The lacy fronds stretched toward him, their tips dripping with that clear, viscous fluid.
’You want me to come closer? Okay. Let me introduce myself properly.’
He retreated to a safe distance, putting the basin’s edge between himself and the hypnotic bloom. The golden light dimmed slightly as he moved out of its immediate range.
He studied the creature’s position. Its massive body was pressed flat against the seafloor, covered in sand and those deceptive lacy fronds. The golden bloom pulsed steadily, still trying to pull him in.
’The bloom is the key. Destroy it, and the hypnosis stops. Then I can fight it on my terms.’
