The SSS-Rank Jellyfish's Growth System

Chapter 51: Chromatic Krakenling

Gray squeezed through the narrow entrance of the Abyssal Hollow, his newly armored bell scraping faintly against the volcanic stone. The crystalline ridges along his margin clicked softly as he emerged into the abyssal darkness.

’Time to hunt.’

The glowing forest stretched before him, its bioluminescent fronds swaying in the slow, cold current. His enhanced senses painted the world in vivid detail — every vibration, every electrical field, every subtle shift in water pressure. Predator’s Instinct whispered at the edge of his awareness, a constant low hum of readiness.

He drifted through the fronds, Hollow Cloak rendering him nearly invisible. Small creatures scattered at his approach — a silver dartfish, a cluster of glowing krill, something with too many legs that skittered beneath a rock. He let them go. He was looking for something worthy of his new form.

Then he felt it.

A vibration. Complex and multi-layered, unlike anything he’d sensed before. It was coming from a clearing ahead, where the glowing fronds gave way to a circle of volcanic sand.

Gray crept closer, his tentacles reading the water.

The creature hung in the center of the clearing, its body suspended in the water like a phantom. It was a squid — but unlike any squid he’d ever seen. Its mantle was maybe three feet long, sleek and hydrodynamic, colored a deep, iridescent purple that shifted to blue and green as it moved. Its eyes were large and golden, with horizontal pupils that gave it an alien, calculating expression.

But the tentacles were what made him pause.

Six of them. Each one was a different color, and each one pulsed with a distinct energy signature. One was deep crimson, radiating heat that made the water shimmer around it. One was pale blue-white, crackling with visible arcs of electricity. One was sickly green, dripping with a viscous fluid that sizzled when it touched the sand below. One was dark violet, its surface rippling with some kind of distorting aura that made the water around it blur. One was bright gold, glowing with a soft, steady light. And the last was silver-grey, its surface reflective like a mirror.

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — Level 22]

HP: 520 / 520

MP: 340 / 340

Threat Level: HIGH

« Analysis »

A juvenile of the Chromatic Kraken lineage — an extremely rare abyssal cephalopod species. Each of the Chromatic Krakenling’s tentacles possesses a different elemental property, making it one of the most versatile predators in the Abyssal Veil. Mature specimens are rumored to reach colossal sizes, but even juveniles are formidable opponents.

Tentacle Properties:

· Crimson — Fire/Heat: Deals burn damage over time. Superheats water on contact.

· Blue-White — Electricity: Discharges electrical shocks. Can chain to nearby targets.

· Green — Acid: Secretes corrosive enzymes that melt armor and flesh.

· Violet — Distortion: Emits a disorienting aura. Attacks from this tentacle are harder to track.

· Gold — Bioluminescence: Can flash to blind or lure prey. Also used for communication.

· Silver — Reflective: Can briefly become mirror-like, reflecting light-based attacks and confusing visual predators.

Behavior: Highly intelligent. The Chromatic Krakenling assesses threats before engaging, cycling through its tentacles to find the most effective combination. It is capable of using multiple tentacles simultaneously and will adapt its strategy mid-combat.

Weakness: The central mantle is less armored than the tentacles. While versatile, the Krakenling can only actively use two tentacle abilities at once before needing to cycle. If its tentacles can be disabled or occupied, its offensive options become limited.

Gray’s crystalline barbs clicked together with anticipation.

’A rainbow squid? Seriously?’

The Krakenling’s golden eyes locked onto him. Its silver tentacle rippled, and for a moment, Gray saw his own reflection in its surface — a sleek, dark form with eight barbed tentacles and crystalline armor. The creature was studying him.

’You want to dance? Fine. Let’s dance.’

The Krakenling attacked first.

Its crimson tentacle lashed forward, and the water around it erupted into scalding steam. Gray pulsed sideways, 100 SPD carrying him out of the superheated zone, but the heat still grazed his bell margin.

[-12 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 553 / 565]

’Let me return the favor.’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift. The venom cloud billowed forward, invisible in the dark water. The Krakenling’s golden eyes flickered, and its blue-white tentacle crackled. An arc of electricity shot through the venom cloud, dispersing the particles harmlessly into the water.

’Electricity cancels venom. Should’ve guessed.’

The Krakenling pressed its advantage. Its green tentacle whipped toward him, dripping corrosive acid. Gray pulsed upward, but the violet tentacle was already there — its distorting aura making it impossible to track. The acid-tipped arm caught him across the crystalline ridges on his bell.

[-22 HP]

[ACID BURN — 5 damage over 6 seconds]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 531 / 565]

[VENOMOUS RIPOSTE — ACTIVATED]

The venom-tipped spines along his bell margin lashed out automatically, injecting concentrated neurotoxin into the green tentacle. The Krakenling flinched, its golden eyes widening as the venom seeped into its flesh.

[TOXIN VULNERABILITY — 30% increased venom damage for 10 seconds]

’Got you. Now we’re in my world.’

He activated Abyssal Lance.

His body compressed, crystalline barbs aligning along his tentacles like the head of a spear. Then he launched. The water screamed past him as he shot forward, 100 SPD focused into a single devastating charge. The Krakenling tried to dodge, but Gray’s Predator’s Instinct had already predicted its movement.

The crystalline barbs impaled the Krakenling’s central mantle.

[ABYSSAL LANCE — 92 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 428 / 520]

[50% DEF PENETRATION — APPLIED]

The Krakenling shrieked — a high-pitched, chittering sound that vibrated through the water. Its golden tentacle flashed, and a blinding burst of light erupted between them. Gray’s vision whited out for a split second, but Predator’s Instinct was already compensating.

’Blind me all you want. I don’t need eyes to kill you.’

He wrapped four tentacles around the Krakenling’s mantle and activated Grip Jaw. The muscular appendages locked tight, crystalline barbs digging deep into the creature’s flesh. The Krakenling thrashed, its tentacles lashing wildly.

[GRIP JAW — 22 DAMAGE]

[GRIP JAW — 24 DAMAGE]

[GRIP JAW — 20 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 362 / 520]

The Krakenling’s blue-white tentacle crackled. Electricity surged through Gray’s body, point-blank.

[-28 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 503 / 565]

’You think electricity scares me?’

He activated Overcharge. The bioelectric organ in his bell detonated, sending a surge of current through his tentacles and directly into the Krakenling’s impaled mantle. The creature convulsed.

[OVERCHARGE — 76 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 286 / 520]

[STUN — 5 SECONDS]

The Krakenling’s tentacles went limp. Its golden eyes glazed over. Gray held on, his Grip Jaw continuing to crush while Neurotoxic Drift seeped into the creature’s wounds.

[GRIP JAW — 23 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 18 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 19 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 226 / 520]

The stun broke. The Krakenling’s violet tentacle pulsed, and suddenly Gray’s senses went haywire. His electroreception flickered. His vibration detection scrambled. The distorting aura was interfering with his ability to track the creature’s movements.

’Struggle all you want. It just spreads the venom faster.’

He released Grip Jaw and pulsed backward, putting distance between them. The Krakenling retreated as well, its tentacles cycling rapidly. The crimson and green tentacles raised, superheated water and corrosive acid preparing for a combined attack.

Gray activated Cavitation Pulse.

The crystalline structures along his bell superheated the water trapped between them. Then he released it — a focused jet of boiling liquid and crystal shrapnel that shot through the water like a bullet. The Krakenling tried to dodge, but the pulse was too fast.

[CAVITATION PULSE — 51 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 175 / 520]

[20% DEF PENETRATION — APPLIED]

The pulse struck the junction where the crimson and green tentacles met the mantle. Both limbs spasmed, their attacks faltering. The superheated water splashed harmlessly into the sand. The acid dripped uselessly from the green tentacle’s tip.

The Krakenling’s golden eyes narrowed. It was reassessing — cycling through its remaining options. The silver tentacle rippled, becoming mirror-like. The gold tentacle began to pulse with rhythmic flashes.

’Pretty lights and shiny mirrors. You think I’m still that weak?’

He closed his eyes and let Predator’s Instinct take over. His electroreception mapped the Krakenling’s bioelectric field. His vibration detection tracked every twitch of its tentacles. He didn’t need to see it. He could feel it.

Abyssal Lance came off cooldown.

He launched.

The Krakenling’s silver tentacle flashed, reflecting his own image back at him. The gold tentacle burst with blinding light. Neither mattered. Gray’s charge was guided by instinct, not sight. The crystalline barbs impaled the Krakenling’s mantle for the second time.

[ABYSSAL LANCE — 95 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 80 / 520]

The Krakenling screamed — a thin, reedy sound that cut through the water. Its tentacles lashed weakly, but the fight was over. Gray wrapped his tentacles around its mantle one final time.

’You never stood a chance.’

Overcharge detonated.

[OVERCHARGE — 78 DAMAGE]

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING — HP: 2 / 520]

The Krakenling’s golden eyes flickered. Its six colored tentacles went slack, their elemental energies fading.

The last two hit points drained as Neurotoxic Drift finished its work.

[CHROMATIC KRAKENLING DEFEATED — 680 EXP]

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Elemental Resistance" (1/5)]

[New Trait Discovered!]

[ELEMENTAL RESISTANCE — Preview]

« Analysis »

A defensive trait derived from creatures with multi-elemental capabilities. Your body has begun to develop natural resistance to elemental damage types through exposure to their effects.

Effect at Completion: 20% damage reduction from Fire, Electrical, and Acid damage. Does not stack with other resistance traits — this is a standalone reduction.

[LEVEL UP!]

[You are now Level 21.]

[10 Stat Points available for distribution.]

[2 Skill Points available.]

Gray absorbed the Krakenling’s corpse slowly, his oral arms processing the dense, strange flesh. The taste was complex — spicy from the crimson tentacle, tangy from the green, faintly metallic from the blue-white. It was unlike anything he’d eaten before.

’Hm? Elemental Resistance? That’s new. And useful. Most things down here seem to have some kind of elemental attack.’

He allocated his stat points without hesitation. Five into SPD, three into ATK, two into DEF.

[SPD: 100 → 105]

[ATK: 41 → 44]

[DEF: 48 → 50]

[HP MAX: 565 → 585]

The skill points went into Abyssal Lance and Grip Jaw — one each.

[ABYSSAL LANCE — Lv. 3 → Lv. 4]

[GRIP JAW — Lv. 3 → Lv. 4]

’That’s five different damage types,’ he thought, flexing his crystalline barbs. ’Piercing, crushing, ranged physical, venom, electricity. If something resists one, I just switch to another.’
