Chapter 50: Abyssal Lancer
[EVOLUTION SELECTED: ABYSSAL LANCER]
[Are you certain? This choice is permanent and will determine your growth path until the next evolution threshold.]
Gray didn’t hesitate.
’Yes. I’m certain.’
The system chimed softly. Then the world dissolved.
The pain came first — deeper and more intense than the first evolution. His bell convulsed, every cell screaming as his body began to restructure itself from the inside out. The translucent flesh of his Spectral Drifter form shimmered, then began to tear.
His eight tentacles shortened, thickening with dense muscle. The crystalline fragments of the Crystalline Dentition trait surged through his body, migrating to the tentacle tips where they erupted into curved, razor-sharp barbs that glinted with an internal light. Each barb was a weapon — designed to pierce, to tear, to lodge in flesh and never let go.
The Minor Shell Plating fragments activated simultaneously. Instead of remaining dormant as a separate trait, they merged with the crystalline growths, the two traits combining into something new. The barbs along his tentacles grew thicker, denser, their crystalline structure reinforced with layers of mineralized armor. Along his bell margin, ridges of dark, crystalline armor formed.
[TRAITS COMBINED: Crystalline Dentition + Minor Shell Plating → ABYSSAL CRYSTAL CARAPACE]
[ABYSSAL CRYSTAL CARAPACE — Integrated]
« Effect »
· All physical attacks ignore 35% of target’s DEF.
· Tentacles lined with reinforced crystalline barbs that deal bonus piercing damage on contact.
· Bell margin protected by ridged crystalline armor. Reduces melee damage taken by 10%.
· Crystal growths are self-repairing — minor damage to barbs and armor regenerates over time.
The Venomous Spines activated next. Along his bell margin, between the crystalline ridges, rows of needle-thin spines emerged — each one tipped with a droplet of concentrated neurotoxin that glistened like liquid amber. Anything that bit him would get a mouthful of venom. Anything that grazed him would carry his poison for hours.
[VENOMOUS SPINES — Integrated]
« Effect »
· Physical contact applies [Toxin Vulnerability], increasing venom damage by 30% for 10 seconds.
· Venom-tipped spines along bell margin automatically retaliate against melee attackers.
· Venom is now concentrated — fewer applications needed for full effect.
Reactive Agility dan Minor Evasion activated together. His nervous system rewired itself, reaction pathways shortening, his body learning to move before danger fully registered. New neural pathways forged themselves through his bell and tentacles, his reflexes sharpening to a razor’s edge. The two traits merged, their effects compounding into something greater than their sum.
[TRAITS COMBINED: Reactive Agility + Minor Evasion → PREDATOR’S INSTINCT]
[PREDATOR’S INSTINCT — Integrated]
« Effect »
· Reaction speed +25%.
· Brief predictive awareness of incoming melee attacks — the user senses danger a split second before it arrives.
· Minor automatic evasion — body instinctively shifts away from incoming damage without conscious input.
· Movement speed increased by 10% when dodging.
Pharyngeal Jaw Structure dissolved. Its essence flowed into his tentacles, and new muscle fibers wove themselves into existence — dense, powerful coils that could contract with crushing force. The grappling function of the jaw structure translated into something his new body could use.
[SKILL ACQUIRED: GRIP JAW]
[GRIP JAW] (Active)
« Effect »
Four tentacles lock onto a single target, wrapping around limbs, throats, or armored plates with crushing force. Target is immobilized and takes continuous physical damage until it breaks free or Gray releases his grip. Damage scales with ATK. MP Cost: 20. Cooldown: 20 seconds.
Cavitation Bubble dissolved next. The system translated its ranged physical attack into something compatible with his new physiology — a focused jet of superheated water and crystalline particles, launched from a concentrated point at the center of his bell.
[SKILL ACQUIRED: CAVITATION PULSE]
[CAVITATION PULSE] (Active)
« Effect »
Channel bioelectric energy into the crystalline structures along your bell, superheating the water trapped between them. Release a focused pulse of superheated liquid and crystal shrapnel in a narrow line. Deals physical + heat damage. Ignores 20% of target’s DEF. Range: 10 meters. MP Cost: 20. Cooldown: 18 seconds.
Gray’s body convulsed as the final changes settled into place. His bell elongated into a sleek, hydrodynamic cone — built for speed, built for precision. The mottled, sandy-grey camouflage of the Phantom Shade faded, replaced by the dark, crystalline armor of the Abyssal Lancer. His eight tentacles fanned behind him, shorter and more muscular, each one lined with barbs that glinted like obsidian blades.
The pain faded. The warmth of completion spread through his reformed body.
[EVOLUTION COMPLETE]
[Welcome, Abyssal Lancer.]
Gray opened his senses to the abyss. The world felt different — sharper, clearer, every vibration and electrical field mapped in perfect detail. His tentacles flexed, and the crystalline barbs clicked together with a sound like sharpening knives.
He pulled up his new status.

’That’s... five different damage types. Piercing from the barbs. Crushing from Grip Jaw. Ranged physical from Cavitation Pulse. Venom from Neurotoxic Drift and Venomous Spines. Electricity from Overcharge.’
He flexed his tentacles, watching the crystalline barbs glint.
’I’m not a one-trick jellyfish anymore.’
But potential was nothing without commitment. The new skills humming in his reformed body were still raw — Level 1 abilities that needed refinement to reach their true power. And his stats, while improved, still had room to grow.
’No more saving for later. The abyss doesn’t pull punches, and neither should I.’
Five points into SPD.
[SPD: 95 → 100]
Three points into ATK. His new physical skills scaled with attack power. Grip Jaw. Abyssal Lance. Cavitation Pulse. The crystalline barbs along his tentacles. All of it needed ATK to matter.
[ATK: 38 → 41]
Two points into DEF. He was a Lancer now — built to charge into melee. He needed to survive what hit back.
[DEF: 46 → 48]
[HP MAX: 545 → 565]
He confirmed the allocation and moved to skills. Six points. He pulled up his new abilities, studying each one.
’Abyssal Lance is my opener. The charge attack that starts every fight. Grip Jaw is my lockdown — hold them in place while the venom works. Cavitation Pulse is my ranged option. And Venomous Riposte punishes anything that fights back.’
Two points into Abyssal Lance.
[ABYSSAL LANCE — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]
[Damage increased: 60-80 → 80-100]
[Range: 8 meters → 10 meters]
[Cooldown: 15 seconds → 12 seconds]
Two points into Grip Jaw.
[GRIP JAW — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]
[Crushing damage per second increased: 10-15 → 18-24]
[Break-free difficulty increased]
[Cooldown: 20 seconds → 16 seconds]
Two points into Cavitation Pulse.
[CAVITATION PULSE — Lv. 1 → Lv. 3]
[Damage: 30-40 → 45-55]
[Range: 10 meters → 12 meters]
[Cooldown: 18 seconds → 14 seconds]
He let the changes settle, feeling the new strength coiling in his tentacles. The crystalline barbs along their length seemed sharper now, glinting with cold light.
’Alright. Time to see what this body can do.’
