The SSS-Rank Jellyfish's Growth System

Chapter 18: Photic Overload

Gray extended his tentacles, reaching for the wounded Morrath with three HP left one sting and it would be dead.

The second Morrath lunged.

Gray felt it coming, he pulsed sideways, abandoning the wounded Morrath. The second Morrath’s jaws snapped shut inches from his bell.

’DAMN IT. I had it. I HAD it.’

The wounded Morrath was recovering. Three HP, but still alive. Its flat head turned toward him, electroreceptors flickering. The second Morrath circled around, placing itself between Gray and its injured partner.

’They’re protecting each other. The healthy one is shielding the wounded one. Bonded pairs, maybe.’

He didn’t have time to analyze it. Overcharge still had eighteen seconds on cooldown. Toxin Cloud was ready but wouldn’t kill fast enough. His HP sat at thirty-six.

’There has to be—’

A soft chime interrupted his thoughts. A notification, small and golden, materialized in the corner of his vision.

[SKILL LEVEL UP!]

[BIOLUMINESCENT PULSE — LEVEL 3]

« Analysis »

Your bioluminescent glow has intensified through repeated use and extreme stress. Pink, blue, and pale violet light now pulses rhythmically across your bell. Attraction effect increased. Light radius: 2.5 meters.

[New Passive Effect Unlocked: PHOTIC OVERLOAD]

« Photic Overload »

A biological reflex — a defense mechanism common to deep-sea jellyfish that sacrifice visibility for survival. When your HP drops below 25%, your body automatically releases a defensive flash of high-intensity bioluminescent light.

· Effect: Electromagnetic pulse overloads nearby electroreceptive and light-sensitive organs

· Duration: 1.5 seconds disorientation, 3-meter radius

· Internal Cooldown: 60 seconds

· After Flash: Bioluminescent Pulse deactivates completely for 8 seconds

· MP Cost: 0

Gray read the description, his mind racing even as the second Morrath began to circle for another attack.

’Electromagnetic pulse. It overloads electroreceptive organs. The Morrath doesn’t have eyes, it senses electrical fields. And this flash isn’t just light. It’s EM noise. A shotgun blast of photons and static.’

He checked his HP. Thirty-six out of two hundred. Eighteen percent. Well below the threshold.

’It hasn’t triggered yet because I took that damage BEFORE the skill leveled up. The system didn’t count it retroactively. So the next hit I take will trigger it. Assuming I survive.’

He understood what he had to do.

The second Morrath tensed, its sinuous body coiling for another lunge. Its flat head swept side to side, tasting his electrical field, measuring the distance.

Gray didn’t dodge.

He turned his body slightly, presenting his bell at an angle—just enough to trigger the threshold.

The Morrath’s flat head slammed into him. The hidden jaws clamped down on the edge of his bell margin and tore.

[-14 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 22 / 200]

[HP BELOW 25% — PHOTIC OVERLOAD TRIGGERED]

His bioluminescence detonated.

A violent surge of electromagnetic energy erupted from his bell, light and static expanding in a three-meter sphere. The kelp fronds around him vibrated, their surfaces flickering with reflected glare as the pulse passed through them.

And the Morrath’s world shattered.

Its flat, shovel-like head was covered in electroreceptors. Hundreds of them. Specialized organs designed to detect the faintest bioelectric fields in absolute darkness. They were the creature’s primary sense, more important than vision could ever be. It inhabited a world of electrical impressions, feeling and tasting currents that made light unnecessary.

Every electroreceptor on the Morrath’s sensory plate fired simultaneously. A billion signals screamed down its nervous system at once, pure static overwhelming everything. The creature’s brain, evolved to process the subtlest electrical whispers, was suddenly drowning in a thunderstorm of meaningless input.

The Morrath convulsed mid-bite. Its jaws, which had been clamped around Gray’s bell margin, sprang open as every muscle in its head locked rigid. Its sinuous body twisted into a grotesque knot, tail lashing wildly through the kelp, pectoral fins splayed at unnatural angles. This went beyond pain. Its sensory reality simply collapsed.

[ELECTRORECEPTIVE OVERLOAD — 1.5 SECONDS — 3 METER RADIUS]

[MORRATH (2) — SENSORY SCRAMBLED]

The wounded Morrath behind it fared no better. Three HP and now drowning in the same electromagnetic static, it thrashed weakly in the water. Its flat head swung side to side, electroreceptors firing random signals into a brain that could no longer distinguish up from down, prey from predator, self from water.

Both creatures were blind in the way that mattered. The sense they relied on to hunt, to navigate, to survive, had been turned against them.

Gray’s bioluminescence was gone. The familiar glow had vanished completely, replaced by total darkness. His tentacles swept through the water, each vibration painting the world around him.

’One-point-five seconds. Move.’

He pulsed toward the wounded Morrath, the one with three HP. The darkness was absolute, but he didn’t need light. His tentacles read the vibrations of the thrashing creature, painting its position in his mind — its size, its distance, the frantic rhythm of its dying struggles. Two pulses. Three. He reached it just as the sensory overload was about to expire.

His tentacles wrapped around its flat head. The nematocysts fired.

[NEMATOCYST STING — 5 DAMAGE]

[MORRATH (1) — HP: 0 / 150]

[MORRATH DEFEATED — 85 EXP]

’One down.’

The corpse went limp. He absorbed it without hesistation, the chitin and flesh dissolving against his feeding surface. The second Morrath was still thrashing somewhere to his left, its senses slowly returning. Gray felt its vibrations stabilize — the wild, random lashing gradually replaced by more deliberate movements.

It was recovering. Its brain was filtering out the static, re-establishing the electrical map of its surroundings.

And it was searching for him.

But his Bioluminescent Pulse was still dark. Five more seconds of silence. The Morrath’s electroreceptors were sensitive, but without the Bioluminescent Pulse broadcasting his position, Gray was just another faint signal in a forest full of them.

He used those seconds to position himself directly above it.

The Morrath’s flat head swept back and forth, tasting the water. Its electroreceptors were recovering, reaching out into the dark for the familiar spark of his bioelectric field. It could feel the ambient signals of the kelp forest, the tiny electrical pulses of smaller creatures hiding in the fronds, the distant hum of something larger moving through the canopy.

Three seconds. He was above it now, tentacles trailing downward like fishing lines.

Two seconds. The Morrath paused. Its flat head tilted upward. Something in its primitive brain sensed that something was wrong, a gap in its electrical map where a predator should have been.

One second.

His Bioluminescent Pulse flickered back to life. Pink-blue-violet light spilled across his bell and illuminated the Morrath directly beneath him.

’Surprise.’

He dropped Toxin Cloud directly on top of it.

The nematocysts billowed downward, enveloping the Morrath in a sphere of venom. The creature convulsed as the damage ticks began, its health bar dropping in rapid increments.

[PARALYZE — PROC]

The Morrath seized, its body locking rigid as the venom took hold. Three seconds of paralysis. Three seconds of free damage.

[MORRATH (2) — HP: 79 / 135]

The paralysis broke. The Morrath lunged upward, its jaws snapping wildly. Gray pulsed sideways, and this time he was fast enough. Fourteen SPD to a disoriented, wounded predator. The jaws closed on kelp.

Overcharge came off cooldown.

’Game over.’

He activated it and dove directly into the Morrath’s body. The electricity arced across his bell and into the creature’s flank, thirty-seven damage in a single, devastating burst.

[OVERCHARGE — 37 DAMAGE]

[MORRATH (2) — HP: 42 / 135]

[STUN — 3 SECONDS]

The Morrath seized. Its sinuous body locked rigid, fins splayed, jaw frozen open. The stun had landed, and now it was helpless.

Gray enveloped it in Toxin Cloud and watched the health bar drain.

[MORRATH (2) — HP: 10 / 135]

The stun broke. The Morrath tried to flee, its body writhing as it fought against the venom and the pain. But it was too slow and too weak. Gray pulsed after it, tentacles extended, and wrapped himself around its head.

Gray drifted in the silent kelp, his bell still tingling with residual electricity. Two Morrath corpses, already dissolving against his feeding surface.

’Photic Overload. An electromagnetic flash that overloads electroreceptive senses. One-point-five seconds of sensory scramble, three-meter radius, sixty-second cooldown. And my Bioluminescent Pulse shuts off for eight seconds afterward.’

He understood the trade-off now. The flash disabled creatures that relied on electrical senses like the Morraths, and probably plenty of other deep-sea predators. But it also left him dark. Unable to see or be seen. For eight seconds, he was a hole in the water.

’A double-edged sword. But I can work with that.’
