Gray hung in the water, his body still humming with the residual charge of the fight. His bell margin throbbed where the second Morrath’s jaws had torn into him, a dull, persistent ache that pulsed with every contraction.

’Twenty-two HP. One hit from death. I can’t stay here.’

He extended his tentacles, reading the water. The kelp forest had gone quiet after the fight, the explosions of electricity and the death throes of two large predators had sent every small creature into hiding.

’Going back to the crevice isn’t an option. It’s too far. The boulder field is... maybe an hour of pulsing, if I don’t run into anything and I definitely don’t have the HP to run into anything.’

He checked the rough mental map he’d been building. The kelp forest stretched in every direction, dense and dark and full of things that wanted to eat him. Behind him lay the boulder field and his shelter. Ahead — deeper into the kelp, into territory he hadn’t mapped, where the fronds grew thicker and the light grew dimmer.

’Forward or back. Both are dangerous. But back is a known dangerous. Forward is... unknown.’

He thought about the Morraths. The way they’d moved through the kelp like it was part of them. The way they’d coordinated their attacks. If there were more of them, and there almost certainly were, running into another pair at twenty-two HP would be a death sentence.

’I need somewhere to rest. This forest has to have rocks somewhere. It can’t be just kelp all the way down.’

He pulsed forward. His tentacles swept the water ahead of him, reading the terrain in the darkness. The Bioluminescent Pulse had returned after the eight-second blackout, but he kept it dim, a faint pink-blue shimmer barely strong enough to illuminate the nearest fronds. No point advertising his presence.

The kelp grew denser as he moved deeper. The stalks thickened, some as wide as his bell, their surfaces rough with barnacles and crawling with tiny crustaceans that scattered at his approach. The fronds overlapped overhead in layers, blocking what little ambient light filtered down from the surface. The darkness here was almost complete.

He found a rock shelf twenty minutes later.

It jutted from the seafloor at an angle, a slab of dark stone crusted with tube worms and patches of something that looked like pale, branching coral. A narrow gap ran along its base where the rock had cracked away from the sediment, creating a shallow overhang maybe two feet deep and six inches high.

’It’s not the crevice. But it’ll work.’

He pulsed toward the gap, his tentacles reaching ahead to probe the opening. The space was empty. Cold, dark, and tight. He squeezed himself inside, his bell compressing to fit beneath the overhang, his tentacles curling around the rough stone edges to anchor himself in place.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: ROCK SHELF OVERHANG]

[This location is marginally suitable for rest. Would you like to designate it as a temporary shelter?]

[WARNING: This shelter offers minimal protection. Regeneration bonus: +20%.]

’Only twenty percent. Better than nothing.’

He confirmed the designation, and the system chimed softly. The regeneration bonus activated, his HP bar began to creep upward — twenty-three, then twenty-four, then twenty-five. The wounds in his bell margin slowly began to knit.

’This is going to take a while.’

He let himself settle into the sand beneath the overhang, his tentacles spreading across the seafloor to maximize his sensory range. The stone above him was solid, reassuringly heavy. Nothing could bite through it and nothing could ambush him from above.

’Status,’ he thought, pulling up the menu.

STATUS MENU

Name: Gray Ashford

Species: Aurelia aurita — Common Moon Jellyfish (Bioluminescent Variant)

Level: 9

Title: Colony Killer

Stats:

· HP: 27 / 200

· MP: 52 / 170

· ATK: 6

· DEF: 14

· SPD: 14

· INT: 25

· LUK: 0

Stat Points: 10

Skill Points: 6

EXP to Next Level: 12%

’Ten stat points to allocate.’

He opened the allocation menu and stared at the numbers. The Morrath fight had exposed his weaknesses. Twenty-five and twenty-two damage per hit, even through fourteen DEF. He’d survived because of Overcharge and Photic Overload, not because he was durable. If the second Morrath had landed one more solid bite, he’d be dead.

’This is what I get for building like a glass cannon. Great damage, terrible survivability.’

But was survivability really the answer? More DEF meant more HP, and more HP meant he could take more hits. But the Morraths had been hitting him for twenty-plus damage even with fourteen DEF. Adding a few more points wouldn’t change that math significantly. They’d still shred him in four or five hits.

’Unless I dump everything into DEF. Go full tank. But then I lose damage. My skills already do decent damage without heavy INT investment. Toxin Cloud is DoT. Overcharge hits hard regardless. Maybe I don’t need more INT. Maybe I need to survive long enough for my damage to work.’

He wrestled with the options, circling the same arguments without reaching a conclusion.

’What I really need is more information. I don’t know what my evolution will bring. If I specialize now, I might lock myself out of something better later. Better to stay flexible until Level 10.’

Five points into DEF. Five into SPD.

[DEF: 14 → 19]

[HP MAX: 200 → 250]

[Current HP: 27 → 77]

[SPD: 14 → 19]

[Movement speed and reaction time significantly increased]

’DEF and SPD. Survivability and escape. I’m not trying to out-damage things anymore. I’m trying to out-live them. Out-run them. Kill them slowly while they can’t catch me.’

He closed the status screen and let his body relax against the sand. The regeneration bonus continued its slow work.

’Just a few more hours. Then back to—’

A vibration cut through the water.

Gray’s tentacles snapped to attention. Something was moving through the kelp. They moved like shards of broken signal, their vibrations jagged and abrupt, cutting paths through the kelp that overlapped and diverged without logic. But there was a current beneath the surface chaos. A quiet pull. Something had their attention.

’What now?’

He pressed himself deeper into the overhang, his bell flattening against the stone. His Bioluminescent Pulse dimmed as much as the passive skill would allow, barely a whisper of pink in the absolute dark. The vibrations grew stronger. Closer. He counted at least six, maybe eight individual sources.

Then he saw them.

They emerged from the kelp like shards of broken mirror, their bodies flashing silver in the faint glow of his bioluminescence. Small fish, each no longer than four inches, their scales catching and scattering what little light there was. They swam in tight formation, moving with a synchronized precision. Their mouths, too large for their bodies, hung open to reveal rows of needle-thin fangs that seemed to glow faintly in the dark.

’Those are... not normal minnows.’

Gray extended his tentacles cautiously, trying to get a better read. The creatures’ vibrations were intense but oddly focused.

Then one of them paused. Its oversized head swiveled toward the overhang.

’Shit.’

The creature darted forward, its needle fangs gleaming. Gray pulled his tentacles back into the overhang, but the creature didn’t attack. It hovered at the edge of the gap, its oversized eyes reflecting his bioluminescence like tiny mirrors. Studying him. Its head tilted, first to one side, then the other, as if trying to decide what it was looking at.

The rest of the school noticed. They broke formation and gathered around the entrance to the overhang, a curtain of silver bodies and needle fangs. One tested the gap, its body slipping partway through before retreating. Too narrow for all of them at once, but not too narrow for one or two.

[RAZORSCALE FRENZY — Level 11]

HP: 45 / 45

Count: 8

Threat Level: HIGH (In Formation)

« Analysis »

A highly aggressive schooling predator found in dense kelp forests and deep-water environments. Razorscale Frenzies are notable for their disproportionately large jaws and needle-like fangs, which can shear through flesh and thin armor with ease. Their scales are sharp enough to cause laceration damage on contact.

Behavior: Hunts in coordinated packs. Will surround prey and attack from multiple angles simultaneously. Known to strip larger creatures to bone in under a minute. Highly aggressive when blood is present. Will flee if their formation is broken.

Weakness: Individually fragile. Disrupting their formation significantly reduces their threat level.

Gray read the analysis three times.

’They’re higher level than me. EIGHT of them. Forty-five HP each. Three hundred sixty total HP between them. And I have eighty-three.’

One of the Razorscales lunged into the overhang. Its needle fangs scraped against the stone above Gray’s bell, leaving faint scratches in the rock. He pulsed backward, pressing himself against the far wall of the gap. The creature retreated, rejoining its schoolmates at the entrance.

They weren’t leaving.

’They know I’m in here. They can probably smell me. Or they just saw my Bioluminescent Pulse and decided I looked tasty.’

Another Razorscale tested the gap. Then another. They were probing the entrance, learning its dimensions, figuring out how many could fit through at once.

’Either there’s a leader in there, or they’re all sharing one brain cell. Either way, they’re using it better than I am right now.’

He pulled up his skills, his mind racing through options. Toxin Cloud would fill the gap with venom, they’d have to swim through poison to reach him. But at forty-five HP each with his current damage, they wouldn’t die fast enough. They’d be on him before the venom finished them. Overcharge would obliterate anything that touched him, but it had a cooldown. He could kill one, maybe two, and then the rest would swarm him.

And Photic Overload wouldn’t help. His HP was at eighty-three. Well above the twenty-five percent threshold. He’d have to let them hit him to trigger it, and by then he might already be dead.

’I need to break their formation. The analysis said they’re individually fragile. If I can separate them, pick them off one by one...’

But the overhang had only one exit. And it was currently blocked by eight razor-fanged death fish.

’Think. THINK. You’ve got Toxin Cloud for area denial, Overcharge for burst damage, and Photic Overload for emergency escape. Use the terrai—’

A Razorscale lunged. This time it didn’t retreat. Its needle fangs sank into Gray’s bell margin, and a sharp, searing pain shot through his body.

[-15 HP]

[LACERATION — 3 damage over 5 seconds]

The damage was immediate and disproportionate. Fifteen points from a single bite, plus a bleed effect that ticked again almost before he could process the first hit. Gray lashed out with his tentacles, deploying Toxin Cloud directly in the Razorscale’s face.

[TOXIN CLOUD — 8 DAMAGE]

[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]

[RAZORSCALE FRENZY — HP: 36 / 45]

[PARALYZE — RESISTED]

The Razorscale tore free, taking a small chunk of his bell with it.

’It’s fast. And those teeth... fifteen damage through nineteen DEF. These things hit harder than the Morrath.’

The school churned at the entrance to the overhang, their silver bodies flashing with excitement. The scent of his blood was in the water now. They’d tasted him. And they wanted more.

Gray pressed himself against the back wall of the overhang and deployed Toxin Cloud. The nematocysts filled the narrow gap, turning the entrance into a wall of venom.

’That should buy me some time.’

He checked his HP. fifty-nine now, the bleed ticking away in slow, methodical increments that ate at his health bar one point at a time. A minute ago he’d been hoping for a quiet rest. A few hours of recovery. A chance to breathe.

The universe, apparently, had other plans.
