Chapter 31: The Mawback Hunter
Gray drifted north along the volcanic slope, his eight translucent tentacles reading the water with every pulse. Two Piston Shrimp burrows had yielded nothing — the occupants either gone or hiding too deep to reach. The rocky terrain stretched before him, pocketed with tide pools and crevices, but the creatures he needed were frustratingly scarce.
’This is going to take forever.’
He paused near a cluster of volcanic boulders, extending his senses. The electrical fields of small creatures flickered at the edges of his perception — crabs, tube worms, a distant school of Runners. Nothing useful.
Then a new vibration rippled through the water.
It was distant but heavy, each pulse carrying a weight that made his tentacles curl instinctively. Whatever was making it was big — bigger than a Morrath, bigger than the Colossal Crab. And it was moving toward him.
’...No. No, that’s not possible. Nothing should be able to—’
The creature emerged from the gloom, and Gray’s thoughts went silent.
It was massive. Twelve feet from snout to tail, its body low and elongated, built like a living battering ram. Four powerful fins jutted from its flanks. The front pair was shorter, almost arm-like, with flexible joints that bent at angles no fin should bend. The rear pair was longer and broader, propelling it through the water with slow, powerful strokes.
Its hide was a mottled grey-green, pebbled like ancient leather, broken by patches of thicker scale that ran in ridges along its spine. Its head was broad and flat, with a jaw that seemed to hinge too far back, lined with teeth that jutted outward even when its mouth was closed. An overbite of serrated ivory designed for clamping onto prey and never letting go.
Its eyes were the worst part. They were pale and milky-white, fixed in their sockets without any visible pupil.
[MAWBACK HUNTER — JUVENILE]
Level: ???
HP: ??? / ???
Threat Level: EXTREME
« Analysis »
A juvenile specimen of a deep-sea apex predator. Adult Mawback Hunter are among the dominant predators of abyssal ecosystems. This juvenile is young, but its sensory capabilities are already fully developed.
WARNING: The Mawback Hunter possesses a multi-spectrum sensory array that includes acute vibration detection, passive electroreception, and a poorly understood pressure-sensing organ located along its lateral line. Standard stealth countermeasures are INEFFECTIVE against this species.
RECOMMENDATION: Do not engage. Seek immediate cover. If cover is unavailable, utilize sensory overload to create a window for escape.
’That’s a JUVENILE?!’
The creature opened its mouth, and a roar rumbled through the water.
’RUN!!’
He pulsed backward, thirty-nine SPD launching him through the water with desperate speed. The Mawback Hunter followed. Its four strange fins propelled it forward, the front pair reaching toward him with grasping, unnatural movements.
He activated the skill mid-pulse, and the silent electromagnetic wave radiated outward in a four-meter sphere. His electrical signature vanished. His vibrations dampened to nothing. Even the pressure waves of his own movement were suppressed.
The Mawback Hunter stopped.
Its pale eyes swept the water, the pressure-sensing organ along its flank twitching. It turned its massive head from left to right, and for one breathless moment, Gray thought it had lost him.
Then its eyes snapped back to his exact position.
The pale, milky-white orbs stared directly into his translucent bell.
And it lunged.
Those overbite teeth, each one curved backward toward the throat, shot toward him with terrifying speed. Gray pulsed sideways with everything he had, thirty-nine SPD barely carrying him out of the creature’s path. The jaws snapped shut inches from his trailing tentacles, and the shockwave of displaced water sent him tumbling through the volcanic rocks.
’EMP Shroud didn’t work!! How?! The system said it shuts down EVERYTHING! Electroreception, vibration detection, lateral lines — NOTHING should be able to track me through it!’
The Mawback Hunter recovered from its lunge and turned, its four fins working in eerie synchronization to pivot its massive body. Its pale eyes found him instantly.
This thing could see through all of it.
The volcanic slope ahead was broken by a field of large boulders, their surfaces crusted with tube worms and dark moss. Narrow gaps between them — too small for the Mawback Hunter to follow, but maybe just wide enough for him.
He pulsed toward the boulder field, his bell contracting with desperate rhythm. The Mawback Hunter surged after him, its four fins propelling it through the water in a burst of primal speed. He felt its jaws snap shut behind him, again and again, each bite closer than the last. A serrated tooth grazed his bell margin, and he felt the sharp sting of lacerated flesh.

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 333 / 345]
The boulder field was close. He aimed for a narrow gap between two massive volcanic rocks, a crevice barely wide enough for his bell. The Mawback Hunter lunged one final time, its jaws opening wide enough to swallow him whole—
Gray compressed his bell and shot through the gap.
The Mawback Hunter’s snout slammed into the rocks. The impact vibrated through the stone, and Gray heard the grinding crunch of teeth against volcanic basalt. The creature thrashed, its four fins scrabbling at the boulders, its pale eyes peering through the gap with predatory fury. But it couldn’t fit. The crevice was too narrow.
Gray didn’t stop. He threaded deeper into the boulder field, squeezing through gap after gap, putting as much stone between himself and that nightmare as possible. Only when the creature’s vibrations had faded to a distant thrum did he allow himself to stop.
He found a small hollow beneath an overhanging rock and pressed himself into it, his bell flattening against the cold stone.
’Fuck...’
His tentacles trembled. His bell margin throbbed where the creature’s tooth had grazed him. Twelve HP lost, but that wasn’t what scared him.
’It saw through EMP Shroud....’
The way the Mawback Hunter had tracked him before he even knew it was there. The way it had found him again after the EMP, instantly, without hesitation.
’It’s not using electroreception. Or vibration. Or any sense the EMP can scramble. It’s using something else. Something I don’t understand.’
He pulled up the system’s analysis, reading it again.
...a multi-spectrum sensory array that includes acute vibration detection, passive electroreception, and a poorly understood pressure-sensing organ located along its lateral line.
’Pressure sensing. The system said it could detect pressure. I don’t even know what that means, but if it tracks the weight of water moving around me, then no amount of stealth will hide me. I have mass. I displace water. That’s not something I can turn off.’
The realization settled into his core like ice. The two skills he’d built his entire evolution around were pointless against this creature.
’And that was just a juvenile. The system said adults are among the dominant predators of abyssal ecosystems. If I ever run into a full-grown one...’
He pressed himself deeper into the hollow.
’Stay calm. It can’t reach me here. The gaps are too small. I’m safe for now.... but how long....?’
