The SSS-Rank Jellyfish's Growth System

Chapter 30: Cavitation Bubble

Gray lingered near the snail’s empty shell, his thoughts still turning over the trait fragment he’d just acquired. Crystalline Dentition. One down, four to go. But finding four more Iron-Shell Drill Snails would take time — time he wasn’t sure he wanted to spend.

He pulled up his status, eyes drifting to the stat that had haunted him since his reincarnation.

LUK: 0

’I fixed it. Zero luck means neutral. But neutral isn’t the same as good.’

He thought about the grinding sessions. Nine Darters for one fragment. Dozens of Runners for two. The drop rates weren’t terrible, but they weren’t kind either. If he wanted to complete Crystalline Dentition in any reasonable timeframe, he’d need more than neutral odds.

’Next level up. I’ll put points into LUK. Just a few. Enough to tilt the odds in my favor without crippling my other stats.’

He closed the status screen and extended his senses across the rocky slope.

’Time to hunt.’

He drifted north along the slope, his Hollow Cloak erasing him from sight and vibration. The volcanic rock stretched before him, pocketed with tide pools and crevices. Each pool held its own tiny ecosystem — small crabs, tube worms, the occasional Silver-Fin Runner darting through the shallows. But no Drill Snails.

Then he felt something strange.

A sharp vibration pulsed through the water, each beat carrying enough force that he felt it in his bell from twenty meters away.

’What is that?’

He drifted closer, Hollow Cloak swallowing his approach. The source of the vibration came into view near a cluster of volcanic boulders at the base of the slope. It was a shrimp — but unlike any shrimp he’d seen in this ocean.

Its body was maybe eight inches long, segmented and curved like the Glowcarapace Shrimp he’d hunted in the boulder field. But the similarities ended there. This creature’s carapace was a dark, mottled brown, ridged with thorny protrusions that looked sharp enough to draw blood. Its eyes were small and black, set deep in sockets beneath a heavy brow ridge.

But the claw was the thing that stopped him cold.

It was massive. A single oversized pincer on the right side of its body, easily half the creature’s total length. The pincer was thick and heavy, its surface covered in the same thorny ridges as its carapace. It looked less like a claw and more like a club designed for smashing.

[PISTON SHRIMP — Level 10]

HP: 95 / 95

Threat Level: MODERATE

« Analysis »

A highly specialized crustacean known for its unique hunting mechanism. The Piston Shrimp’s oversized claw has evolved into a biological cavitation weapon — it snaps shut with such speed and force that it creates a high-pressure bubble of superheated plasma. When this bubble collapses, it generates a shockwave capable of stunning or killing small prey at range.

Behavior: Solitary. Territorial. The Piston Shrimp digs burrows in rock and coral and defends them aggressively. Will fire its claw at anything that enters its perceived territory, regardless of size.

Weakness: Slow to reload. The claw requires several seconds to reset between shots. Vulnerable to attacks from behind or while the claw is recharging.

Gray stared at the creature.

’...Wait. I’ve seen this before.’

He remembered it now. A nature documentary, one of those late-night programs he’d half-watched during his human life. Creatures that could throw punches so fast the water boiled around them.

’I thought those were tropical. What the hell is one doing in a deep-sea kelp forest?’

But the creature in front of him was bigger than any pistol shrimp he’d seen on television. Its oversized claw twitched as it worked at the base of a volcanic boulder, excavating a burrow with methodical precision. Its small black eyes swiveled constantly, scanning for threats.

’It’s level 10. Same as me. But that claw...’

He watched as the shrimp paused its digging and turned toward a small crab that had wandered too close. The claw snapped.

The sound was like a gunshot underwater. A sharp, percussive CRACK that vibrated through Gray’s entire body. The water between the shrimp and the crab seemed to implode, a tiny void opening for a fraction of a second before collapsing in on itself. A jet of superheated water shot outward, and the shockwave slammed into the crab with enough force to flip it onto its back.

The crab’s health bar dropped by nearly half in a single hit. It scrambled to right itself, legs kicking frantically, but the shrimp was already moving. It skittered forward and brought the claw down like a hammer, crushing the crab’s shell with two quick strikes.

[PISTON SHRIMP — CAVITATION BLAST]

[SCUTTLE CRAB — 18 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — CRUSHING CLAW]

[SCUTTLE CRAB DEFEATED]

The shrimp began to feed, its smaller left claw tearing chunks from the crab’s shattered shell.

Gray floated in the darkness, processing what he’d just seen.

’That’s a ranged attack. It creates cavitation bubbles in the water — superheated plasma that generates a shockwave. The crab took eighteen damage in one hit, and that was just the shockwave. If the actual plasma jet hit...’

His mind raced with possibilities. A trait from this creature could give him something entirely new.

’That’s what I need. Physical damage with range. It covers every weakness in my build.’

The shrimp finished its meal and returned to its burrow, its oversized claw dragging through the volcanic rock with practiced ease. It hadn’t noticed Gray at all — Hollow Cloak had done its work.

Gray circled behind it, positioning himself at the edge of the burrow’s entrance. The shrimp was facing away from him, its claw resting against the rock while its smaller left pincer scraped at the tunnel wall.

’Neurotoxic Drift first. Let the venom weaken it. Then finish it before it can turn that claw on me.’

He deployed the skill. The invisible cloud of neurotoxin drifted into the burrow, settling over the shrimp’s thorny carapace. Two seconds of symptom delay. Then the damage ticks began.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — HP: 84 / 95]

The shrimp jolted. Its oversized claw snapped up, and the creature spun with surprising speed, its small black eyes locking onto the empty water behind it. It couldn’t see Gray but it knew something was wrong. Its antennae swept through the water, tasting the venom, trying to locate the source.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — HP: 74 / 95]

The shrimp’s claw twitched. It was searching for a target, but Gray was already moving. He pulsed to the left, keeping himself out of the claw’s firing arc. The shrimp tracked the movement — sensing the displacement of water, the faint electrical field of his body.

’EMP Shroud — Activated.’

The silent electromagnetic pulse radiated outward, and the shrimp’s sensory world went dark. Its antennae froze. Its claw dropped slightly, the creature suddenly blind to everything around it. For six seconds, Gray didn’t exist in any sense the shrimp could perceive.

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, layering fresh venom over the disoriented creature.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — HP: 53 / 95]

The shrimp thrashed, its claw snapping wildly at nothing. Each snap sent a cavitation blast into the empty water, shockwaves radiating outward in all directions. One passed close enough to Gray’s bell that he felt the pressure wave ripple through his translucent flesh. The damage numbers were impressive — even the near-misses carried force.

But the shrimp was dying. Its HP bar ticked down with every second, the venom doing its silent work. By the time EMP Shroud faded and its senses returned, it was already below half health. Its movements were slower now, the claw heavy and sluggish.

Gray positioned himself directly behind the creature and activated Overcharge.

The electricity arced through his tentacles and into the shrimp’s thorny carapace. Its body convulsed, the oversized claw snapping one final time — a desperate, unaimed blast that shot into the empty water above.

[OVERCHARGE — 37 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — HP: 16 / 95]

[STUN — 2 SECONDS]

The stun locked the shrimp in place. Its claw drooped. Its legs twitched uselessly against the rock. Gray wrapped his tentacles around its carapace and deployed Neurotoxic Drift one final time.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]

[PISTON SHRIMP — HP: 0 / 95]

[PISTON SHRIMP DEFEATED — 95 EXP]

[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Cavitation Bubble" (1/5)]

[New Trait Discovered!]

[CAVITATION BUBBLE — Preview]

« Analysis »

A rare offensive trait derived from creatures capable of generating superheated cavitation bubbles. Enables the user to create and collapse high-energy bubbles that deal physical damage at range through shockwave generation.

Effect at Completion: Grants a new active skill — [Cavitation Pulse]. Ranged physical attack that ignores 20% of target’s DEF. May cause [Disorient] on hit.

Gray absorbed the shrimp’s corpse, his feeding surface processing the chitin and flesh with practiced efficiency. EXP jumped to 78%.

’This is even better than Crystalline Dentition.’

He checked his trait fragments.

Trait Fragments:

· Crystalline Dentition (1/5)

· Cavitation Bubble (1/5)

· Reactive Agility (1/3)

’Three traits in progress. Two of them are exactly what I needed. But both are five-fragment traits, which means I’ll be hunting these things for a while.’
