Chapter 29: Physical Damage Trait
Gray circled above the Iron-Shell Drill Snail, his eight translucent tentacles trailing behind him like ghostly ribbons. The creature continued its methodical scraping, its radula gouging fresh furrows in the volcanic rock, completely unaware of the predator hovering less than a meter above its shell.
’It couldn’t hurt me if it tried. Problem is, once it shuts that shell, I can’t hurt it either.’
He studied the snail’s anatomy, his enhanced senses painting a detailed picture. The shell was a fortress — thick iron-grey plates spiraling into a cone, each ridge overlapping the next like armor plating. But the opening, where the snail’s muscular foot emerged to grip the rock, was unprotected. Soft, pale flesh, pulsing with the slow rhythm of the creature’s circulatory system.
’The opening is the weak point. I need to hit it before it can withdraw.’
He drifted lower, positioning himself directly above the snail’s head. The blunt, eyeless wedge probed the water with its two thick tentacles, tasting the chemical traces of algae and minerals.
’Neurotoxic Drift first. If the venom takes hold before it notices, it might be too disoriented to retreat.’
He deployed the skill. The invisible, silent cloud of neurotoxin drifted downward, settling over the snail’s exposed flesh like a shroud. The creature continued scraping for two full seconds — the symptom delay doing its work. Then the damage ticks began.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 270 / 280]
The snail paused. Its radula stopped mid-scrape. Its tentacles retracted slightly, tasting the water with sudden urgency. It knew something was wrong, but it couldn’t identify the source. The venom was already in its system, already working.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 259 / 280]
[PARALYZE — RESISTED]
The snail’s reaction was immediate. Its muscular foot contracted, pulling back toward the shell opening. The thick tentacles withdrew. The radula folded inward. In the span of two seconds, the soft, vulnerable body began to disappear into the armored fortress.
’Not a Chance.’
Gray pulsed downward, thirty-nine SPD closing the gap before the snail could fully retreat. He wrapped four tentacles around the edge of the shell opening and deployed Overcharge at point-blank range.
The electricity arced directly into the snail’s exposed flesh. Its body convulsed, the muscular foot spasming against the rock, the tentacles lashing wildly.
[OVERCHARGE — 35 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 224 / 280]
[STUN — 2 SECONDS]
The snail’s retreat halted. Its body locked rigid, half-in and half-out of the shell, the muscular foot twitching uselessly against the stone. The stun had interrupted its withdrawal, leaving the soft flesh exposed.
Gray didn’t waste the window. He deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, layering fresh venom over the stunned creature.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 193 / 280]
The stun broke. The snail resumed its retreat, but the venom was already in its system, the damage ticks continuing. Its muscular foot slid backward into the shell, the opening sealing with a thick, leathery operculum that closed like a door.
Gray drifted back, watching. The shell sat motionless on the rock, a fortress of iron-grey armor. Nothing visible remained of the creature inside.
But the damage ticks continued.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 182 / 280]
’The venom doesn’t care about the shell. It’s already inside.’
He circled the shell slowly, his tentacles trailing across its ridged surface. The armor was even thicker than he’d thought — his nematocysts would never have penetrated it, even in his old form. But Neurotoxic Drift didn’t need to penetrate. It seeped through openings, through the gaps between mantle and shell, through the very tissues of the creature itself.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 8 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 12 DAMAGE]
....
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 156/ 280]
The snail was dying inside its own fortress. The venom was killing it, and there was nothing it could do to stop it. No way to flush the neurotoxin from its system. It could only huddle in the dark and wait.
Gray almost felt sorry for it.
The damage ticks continued, steady and methodical. The snail’s HP bar crept downward with the slow inevitability of a tide.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 10 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 16 DAMAGE]
....
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 124 / 280]
The snail’s operculum twitched. The creature was weakening, its muscular control faltering. Soon the door would open again, and Gray would finish it.
He extended his tentacles, reading the vibrations of the dying creature inside its shell. The slow, weakening pulse of its heart. The fading electrical signals of its nervous system. It wouldn’t be long now.
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 9 DAMAGE]
[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 11 DAMAGE]
....
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL — HP: 31 / 280]
The operculum sagged. The muscular door that had sealed the shell opening went slack, revealing a sliver of pale flesh within. The snail was losing consciousness, its body no longer responding to the commands of its dying brain.
Gray drifted closer. His tentacles reached into the shell opening, wrapping around the soft, exposed flesh. The snail didn’t resist. It couldn’t. The venom had done its work.
’This is mercy. It’s already dead. It just doesn’t know it yet.’
He activated Overcharge one final time. The electricity coursed through his tentacles and into the snail’s body, a killing stroke that ended its suffering in an instant. The muscular foot went limp. The tentacles drooped. The radula, that diamond-hard tongue, relaxed for the last time.
[OVERCHARGE — 38 DAMAGE]
[IRON-SHELL DRILL SNAIL DEFEATED — 110 EXP]
[TRAIT FRAGMENT ACQUIRED: "Crystalline Dentition" (1/5)]
[New Trait Discovered!]
[CRYSTALLINE DENTITION — Preview]
« Analysis »
A rare offensive trait derived from creatures with mineralized feeding structures. Enhances the user’s ability to inflict physical damage through crystalline growths that can shear through armor and bone.
Effect at Completion: Physical attacks ignore 30% of target’s DEF. Grants a new piercing-type skill.
’Physical damage. This is exactly what I needed.’
He absorbed the snail’s corpse, his oral arms dissolving the soft flesh and extracting every fragment of usable material. The shell remained behind — too thick, too mineralized for his feeding surface to process quickly.
He checked his status. EXP had jumped to 62% toward Level 11. Hunger was down to 2%. The snail had been a substantial meal, its biomass far denser than the fish and crabs he’d been subsisting on.
’One fragment down. Four more to complete the trait. But where am I going to find four more of these things?’
He scanned the rocky slope with his enhanced senses, his tentacles reading the electrical fields and vibrations of the surrounding area. The Drill Snail had been solitary. No others of its kind within his detection range.
’Rare. Naturally. I don’t know why I expected anything else. The game’s been rigged since I spawned in as a jellyfish.’
