Chapter 43: Volume 1, - 43: No Fee, No Meeting
The Olivais kitchen was quiet on Saturday morning, pale spring sunlight cutting through the glass and warming the tiled floor. Leonor sat at the small wooden table in the corner, carefully filling in a colouring book with oversized wax crayons, while Sofia poured herself a mug of black coffee.
Rayan sat opposite his sister, his hands loosely wrapped around a glass of water. His muscles still ached slightly from Friday morning’s high-intensity possession drills under Tavares, but the sharp, knotting anxiety that had squeezed his chest all week had settled into a low, manageable hum. Yesterday morning’s meeting in Room Three at Alcochete had drawn an official line in the sand: Sporting knew, the report was logged, and the safeguarding incident would remain separate from his football evaluation.
Then Sofia’s mobile phone vibrated against the table surface.
The screen showed Karim’s name.
Sofia answered the call and put it on speaker, placing the phone between her coffee mug and the blue notepad. "Bom dia, Karim."
"Sofia," Karim’s voice came through the speaker, tight and rapid. He was calling from his flat in Amadora, a television playing a morning news programme behind him. "Has he tried to reach Rayan?"
"No. He hasn’t contacted us," Sofia said calmly. "Why? Has Bento been in touch with you?"
"He’s called three times this morning," Karim said, sounding breathless. "He’s furious, Sofia. He says our hesitation is making us look like amateurs. He said the contact from Celta Vigo would move on to another player from Braga unless we confirmed the setup fee this morning."
Sofia took a sip of her coffee. "Karim, take a breath."
"You don’t understand how these things work!" Karim’s tone rose, tinged with a defensive edge that Rayan recognised immediately. "Bento said Sporting is playing games with us. He said Tavares and Marta Nunes are just protecting their own assets, and that when June comes, they’ll release Rayan without a second thought. He said Helena Matos is only interfering because she wants to lock Rayan into her own private consultancy later!"
Rayan looked down at his glass of water. Hearing Bento’s words repeated through his father’s voice poked directly at the dark, persistent fear in his gut. ’What if Tavares is only keeping me around until June?’
"Karim," Sofia’s voice hardened. "Helena found no matching registration, and the clubs she contacted could not confirm a mandate. Yesterday, Sporting confirmed that Bento has no authority from them. He is pressuring you to send money because he’s cover is blown."
"He showed me photos, Sofia!" Karim insisted, his voice wavering slightly. "He showed me messages on his phone from scouts!"
"Anyone can save a photo or draft a message on a screen," Sofia replied. "Did he give you a contract? Did he give you an agency registration number?"
"He said the paperwork gets processed after the fee is settled," Karim muttered. "If we just turn our backs on him, and he was telling the truth... what if we blow Rayan’s only real backup option?"
Sofia looked across the table at Rayan, who remembered Marta’s calm eyes in the administration wing and the weight of Tavares’s stopwatch.
"Dad," Rayan spoke into the phone, his voice steady. "Coach Tavares said yesterday that no outsider can promise me minutes or a contract. They judge me on training, school, medical compliance, matches, potential and what the squad needs. Bento can’t change any of that."
There was a silence on the line before Karim sighed. "Rayan... you don’t know how ruthless this business is. I’m just trying to make sure you have a door open."
"Call him back and put us all on speaker," Sofia instructed. "We ask for proof once. If he refuses, this ends today."
Karim hesitated for several seconds before answering. "All right. Hold on. I’ll connect us."
The phone clicked into a series of rhythmic electronic tones as Karim dialled out. After four rings, the line picked up.
"Karim," Artur Bento’s resonant voice came through the speaker. "I hope you’ve come to your senses. My associate in Vigo is leaving at midday. If we don’t transfer the setup funds in the next hour, the trial slot goes to a boy from Braga."
"Senhor Bento," Karim began. "I have Sofia and Rayan on the line with me."
A brief beat of silence passed on Bento’s end before he adjusted his tone. "Dona Sofia. Bom dia. Karim said you were hesitant. I understand, but this opportunity will not stay open while your family debates paperwork."
"Bom dia, Senhor Bento," Sofia said, her voice entirely neutral. "Before we discuss any setup fees or trials, I need to complete our verification checklist for Rayan’s file. Question one: What is your full legal name and the registered business name of your agency?"
Bento let out a light chuckle. "Dona Sofia, official paperwork is handled once a formal invitation is issued. We don’t need to get bogged down in bureaucratic details—"
"Question two," Sofia interrupted sharply. "What is your Portuguese Football Federation intermediary registration number?"
"I work through an international consultancy network," Bento said, his voice tightening. "We don’t operate under standard local agency registrations."
"So you haven’t provided any registration number," Sofia stated. "Question three: What is the official registered physical address of your business?"
"Our legal representation is managed through partners in Spain," Bento replied, his speed of speech increasing. "If you want to sit around asking for utility bills while Rayan’s development stalls on Sporting’s bench, that is your choice as a parent."
"Question four: Where are the written terms of your representation agreement?" Sofia continued. "Question five: Do you have a written mandate from Celta Vigo or any other club granting you authority to negotiate on their behalf for Under-16 players?"
"Clubs don’t hand out open mandates to individual families!" Bento snapped, his smooth veneer cracking. "That is why the setup fee of three thousand euros is required. To cover the administrative logistics!"
"Question six: What exact service is being purchased with that three thousand euros?" Sofia asked relentlessly. "Question seven: What are the written refund conditions if no trial materialises within thirty days? And question eight: What safeguarding procedure do you have for arranging travel and protecting a minor during a foreign trial?"
A heavy silence fell across the line.
When Bento spoke again, his tone was thin, cold, and biting. "Your family clearly does not have the courage required for professional football," Bento said. "When Sporting releases Rayan at the end of the season, remember that I offered you another option."
The insult targeted every doubt Rayan had carried since his calf injury. For a second, he wanted to speak up, to defend himself, to tell Bento that he was good enough to earn his place.
’No.’ Rayan kept quiet. Bento had been asked for proof. That was enough.
Over the speaker, Karim’s voice broke the silence, sounding small and exhausted. "Senhor Bento... if the opportunity is real... send the written mandate and your registration details to Sofia’s email. If you send the written proof, we will look at it."
On the other end of the line, Bento let out a harsh scoff. "I don’t waste time with families that cannot make decisions. Good luck."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
"Forward me every message he sent and a screenshot of his call history," Sofia said into the line to Karim.
Karim sent them while they remained on the call. Sofia saved the files, forwarded them directly to Isabel Brandão’s official email at Sporting, and tapped the contact settings to select Block Number.
"Done," Sofia said softly.
"I... I thought he was legitimate, Sofia," Karim said, his voice flat and stripped of its earlier confidence. "When I met him at the café, he knew so many names. He made it sound like he was offering something special that Sporting was hiding from us. I thought... if I brought an offer to the table, it would show I was doing my part. I didn’t want Rayan to be left behind."
He paused, clearing his throat awkwardly. "I should have told you before I took him to meet him, Sofia. I was wrong."
Sofia looked at the blue notepad on the table. Her expression remained firm, though the sharp anger in her eyes settled into a solemn understanding.
"You gave Bento Rayan’s birthday, his squad details, and direct access to our family, Karim," Sofia said, her voice measured. "That cannot happen again."
"I know," Karim whispered. "I’m sorry. I won’t contact him again."
"If anything else comes through, send it to me before you block him," Sofia added. "Then delete his number."
"I will. I’ll do it right now," Karim said softly. "Rayan... are you still there?"
"I’m here, Dad," Rayan said.
"Have a good session next week," Karim said, his tone heavy with embarrassment. "I’ll... I’ll call you later."
"Thanks, Dad. Bye."
The call ended quietly. Rayan stared at the dark phone screen, Karim’s embarrassed voice lingering in the kitchen.
