Chapter 42: Volume 1, - 42: Sporting’s Safeguarding Room
The Friday morning ferry across the Tagus carried a thick river fog that clung to the lower decks and blurred the Lisbon skyline into grey silhouettes. Rayan sat near the passenger window, his hands shoved deep into his tracksuit pockets, watching the water churn against the hull. Sofia sat beside him, holding a dark leather folder containing Helena’s checklist, Rayan’s report cards, and the blue notepad.
Neither of them spoke much on the crossing, nor during the fifteen-minute bus ride from Montijo through the flat expanse of the South Bank. By eight-forty, the iron gates of the Academia Cristiano Ronaldo appeared through the mist. The quiet rural roads gave way to trimmed lawns, low grey-and-green administrative buildings, and the pale perimeter fences enclosing the training pitches.
"We go to the administrative reception first," Sofia said, checking her wristwatch as they stepped off the bus. "Senhora Nunes said eight-fifty."
Rayan adjusted the strap of his academy backpack. His stomach tightened the way it did before a difficult session, only worse. On the pitch, decisions were measured in space, timing, and touches. Here, sitting inside an administrative corridor waiting for a scheduled meeting, everything felt out of his hands.
The reception desk inside the main administrative building was quiet. A safeguarding poster detailing player welfare protocols, contact lines, and federation standards hung beside a glass-encased display of academy trophies. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the end of the hall, the Under-16 pitch was visible under the morning spray of automated sprinklers. Grounds staff were already setting out cones for the morning sessions.
At eight-fifty precisely, Marta Nunes, Sporting’s academy director, stepped into the waiting area. She wore her standard dark suit over a green Sporting polo shirt, a lanyard with her access card hanging around her neck.
"Bom dia, Sofia. Bom dia, Rayan," Marta said, offering a brief, firm handshake to both. Her tone was practical and direct. "Thank you for coming in early before training. We have room three set up upstairs."
They followed her up a quiet set of stairs to the second floor of the administration wing. The door to the safeguarding room was open. Inside, Isabel Brandão, the academy welfare officer, was already seated at the long oval wooden table, two thick grey academy folders open in front of her. Beside her sat Coach João Tavares. He wore his standard black Sporting coaching tracktop, his arms folded across his chest, his whistle dangling against his jacket zip.
"Bom dia," Tavares said with a brief nod as Rayan and Sofia entered. He didn’t smile, but his expression was neutral and analytical, the same gaze he used when observing tactical drills from the touchline.
"Please, take a seat," Isabel said, gesturing to the chairs opposite them. A plastic water dispenser stood in the corner near a window overlooking Pitch 3, where two groundsmen were raking the turf edges.
Sofia sat down with her usual rigid poise, placing her dark leather folder squarely on the table. Rayan took the chair next to her, keeping his posture straight, though he couldn’t keep his eyes from darting briefly towards Tavares.
"Let’s establish the context first," Marta said, taking the chair at the head of the table and picking up a blue ballpoint pen. "Sofia called at six-forty-five this morning to report an unverified approach. Isabel and I asked João to join us because the approach specifically referenced Rayan’s Under-16 status and online match footage. Sofia, please state the facts as you know them."
Sofia opened her folder and referenced the blue notepad. She spoke calmly, laying out each detail in the exact chronological order she had practised at the kitchen table.
"On Tuesday afternoon, Rayan’s father, Karim, took Rayan to meet a man who presented himself as Artur Bento," Sofia began. "Karim arranged this meeting entirely on his own without informing me or checking the individual’s credentials. Bento claimed to have direct contacts at several foreign clubs, specifically mentioning interest in Spain and England. He told Karim and Rayan that Sporting CP’s technical staff were overlooking Rayan’s development."
Sofia turned a page. "Bento requested several thousand euros in supposed setup costs for representation. He produced no written mandate, no official agency credentials, and no federation registration number. Karim gave him Rayan’s full name and birthday, confirmed that he was in Sporting’s Under-16 squad, sent him Joca’s documentary link, and gave him my phone number."
Sofia paused, laying her hand over the plastic sleeve containing Helena Matos’s checklist. "Last night, player-protection adviser Helena Matos reviewed what we had. She verified through the Portuguese Football Federation database that no intermediary or agency under the name Artur Bento or his phone number holds an active registration. She also contacted two foreign clubs Bento mentioned; neither confirmed any mandate or authority. We are here to report this approach to Sporting and ensure Rayan is protected."
Silence settled over the room for a moment, punctuated only by the distant hum of a lawnmower outside on Pitch 2.
"Rayan," Isabel said, turning towards him directly. "Has Bento contacted you directly since Tuesday?"
"No," Rayan said.
"Did he ask to meet you without a parent, or request training schedules, medical information, or private academy footage?" Isabel asked, her pen hovering over her folder.
"No," Rayan answered firmly.
Isabel made a brief note. "Good. If that changes, tell your mom and the club immediately. Do not answer him alone."
Marta finished taking her notes and looked directly at Sofia, then at Rayan. "Rayan, you are not in trouble because an adult approached you. Reporting it was the right decision."
Marta capped her pen. "Unverified approaches like this happen when a player gets public visibility. Our job is to protect you, keep private information private, and stop this from distracting you while you’re under review."
Tavares shifted in his chair, leaning his forearms onto the wooden table. His dark eyes fixed on Rayan.
"No outsider can promise you minutes, retention, or a contract," Tavares said, his voice measured and firm. "We judge you from training, school, medical compliance, matches, potential, and what the squad needs. Bento changes none of that."
"To confirm officially," Marta added, looking at Sofia, "Artur Bento has no relationship with Sporting and no part in our selection or retention decisions."
"I suspected as much," Sofia said.
"We are recording this incident in Rayan’s internal academy safeguarding file today," Marta said. "Forward every message or call record to Isabel’s office. Do not negotiate with him."
Isabel glanced at a printed sheet attached to her folder. "We also need to address the footage Bento mentioned. He watched a video online?"
"Yes," Rayan said, his voice quiet. "He said he saw Joca’s documentary."
"We are aware of the project young Joca put together," Isabel said gently. "We are not blaming Joca for what happened. However, keeping the full video off public pages makes it harder for strangers to find you."
"Joca made the full video unlisted on Wednesday," Rayan said.
"Good," Isabel said. "That reduces exposure while you are still a minor."
Rayan gripped his knees under the table. The core fear that had kept him awake since Tuesday night finally broke through his restraint. "Does... does this report hurt my chances for retention? Does it go against my record?"
Marta stopped writing and looked Rayan squarely in the eyes.
"You told us as soon as you understood the problem," Marta said clearly. " This safeguarding report is separate from your football evaluation. You are fifteen years old. An adult approached you without authority and tried to use your situation. That is a safeguarding matter, not a technical failing on your part, and it will not be counted against your performance record."
She held his gaze for a second longer. "However, how you and your family handle future approaches, private data, and outside contact does matter. Compliance with club guidance is part of being a professional."
Rayan took a slow breath. The knot in his stomach eased slightly, though Tavares’s steady gaze reminded him that his football evaluation remained entirely open.
Tavares stood up, checking his stopwatch. "Training starts in forty minutes, Rayan. The grounds staff are finishing the pitch prep. Go down to the changing room, get your gear on, and prepare for the session like any other Friday."
"Yes, Coach," Rayan said, standing up immediately.
Sofia rose as well, extending her hand across the table to Marta and Isabel. "Thank you both for your time and for handling this quickly."
Marta turned to Sofia before they left. "One last thing. Artur Bento receives no more academy information. No schedules, training details, or personal data. If he contacts you, forward everything to Isabel and end the conversation."
"Understood," Sofia said.
