Chapter 183: Borrowed identity.
Micheal.
With that absolute resolve set firmly in my mind, I silently backed away from the shadows and walked off to gather a few essential items that would be crucial for what I needed to execute.
However, just as I was making my way back down the corridor, I somehow slipped up. I didn’t even realize how Lurgard had spotted me, but before I knew it, he had picked up my trail and was actively hunting me down.
My inner wolf immediately felt the shift in the air, warning me of the approaching danger. I instantly hastened my steps, taking a quick, sharp turn down a connecting hallway.
But deep down, I knew the bitter truth: no matter how far I walked or how fast I ran in human form, an Alpha like him would inevitably catch up with me. So, without wasting another precious second, I stepped aside and allowed my inner wolf to completely take over.
One of my most unique, formidable abilities is the power to blend seamlessly into anything, anywhere, and at any given time.
I immediately shapeshifted, manipulating my physical form so precisely that my outer layer perfectly mirrored and blended in with the exact color and texture of the concrete wall beside me. I became a ghost in plain sight, completely indistinguishable from the structure itself.
From where I stood frozen against the surface, I had a front-row view as Lurgard rounded the corner. I could see the absolute, boiling fury etched into every line of his face, and watching his violent agitation excited me more than anything else in the world.
This was merely the very beginning of his frustration. He and his arrogant brothers were about to experience pure hell at my hands, and they wouldn’t even see it coming.
I let out a soft, silent chuckle in my mind as I watched him throw his hands up, turn back on his heel, and head straight back toward the main corridor he had just come from.
I waited for a short while until his scent had completely dissipated from the hallway before I shifted back into my human form and headed straight toward my original destination. There were still a lot of critical things that needed to be handled before the head doctor officially initiated the operation on Theresa.
I walked faster, keeping my head down as I navigated through the private sections of the building, until I came across a quiet doctor’s office. Luckily for me, the room was dimly lit and completely empty—the physician clearly wasn’t inside, and I doubted he was even scheduled for duty tonight.
I briefly considered adopting his identity for my plan, but I quickly discarded the thought. Taking the place of an off-duty doctor wouldn’t grant me the access I required; he needed to actually be on duty for this to work.
Just as I turned around and tried to leave the room to find a better target, the heavy door suddenly swung open, and the doctor stepped inside.
He froze in his tracks, his eyes locking onto me in instant suspicion. "Who are you?" he asked, his voice sharp and demanding.
I forced a smooth, pleasant smile onto my face and casually stretched out my hand to offer him a warm greeting.
"I have an appointment with you, doc," I said, intentionally lacing my voice with a relaxed, easygoing tone to instantly defuse the rising tension in the room.
The doctor furrowed his brows slightly, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at my outstretched hand with cold, unreadable suspicion.
"Your name?" he asked instead, completely ignoring the gesture and making no move to take my hand.
I immediately lowered my hand without letting my smile slip, casually wiping my palm against my clothes as if completely unbothered by the rejection. But beneath the calm facade, a dark wave of irritation flared in my chest.
’What an arrogant jerk,’ I thought to myself.
Taking advantage of his guarded stance, I swiftly closed the small distance between us in a fraction of a second. Before he could even register the sudden movement or open his mouth to call for security, I delivered a precise, brutal strike straight to the side of his neck.
The hit landed with sickening accuracy, instantly short-circuiting his nerves and causing his eyes to roll back as his body went completely limp, collapsing toward the floor.
"Let me borrow your identity!" I whispered into the quiet room, catching his dead weight before it made a sound.
Without wasting a single second, I grabbed him by the shoulders and dragged his unconscious body across the floor, expertly hiding him out of sight behind the large storage cabinet in the corner of his office.
Just as I finished securing him in the shadows, my phone vibrated in my pocket with a soft, distinct ping. I pulled it out and carefully opened the incoming text message.
> What’s the progress?
I read the stark words silently in my head, my jaw tightening as my fingers immediately moved across the screen with rapid, practiced speed, eager to provide an update without a moment’s hesitation.
> It’s already in motion, so I would say 15% progress.
I hit send, a dark, wicked chuckle escaping my throat as I slid the phone back into my pocket.
Turning toward the coat rack, I slipped off my jacket and donned the doctor’s long white lab coat, adjusting the fit over my shoulders. I then grabbed his surgical mask, stretching the loops around my ears to cover the lower half of my face.
Thanks to my abilities, as long as I possessed an object or garment intimately connected to a target, I could flawlessly mimic everything about them—including the exact pitch, timbre, and subtle nuances of their voice without the slightest flaw.
My smile deepened into a sinister grin beneath the paper mask as I turned toward the door, stepping out of the office and heading straight down the hallway toward the operating room.
