Chapter 117: Who Miss Wexler Contacted
Sophie Wexler hadn’t even had a chance to get into her aircraft when her communicator started vibrating.
Seeing who was calling, Sophie paused. ’What is he calling me for now?’
Still, she reached out and answered the call. "What’s up, Cillian?"
As she spoke, Sophie reached out and shrank the size of the virtual screen.
She had bought quite a lot, but the mall would be delivering it all later. She just needed to provide an address, so she only took the guitar with her when she left.
She placed the guitar in her hand into the aircraft, then looked up and noticed the man on the other end of the call was looking back and forth at something.
Sophie was puzzled.
"What are you looking at?" As she asked, she even turned her head to glance around.
It was just a normal mall with people coming and going. There was nothing else.
She heard him clear his throat, a fist held to his mouth, before his tone quickly returned to normal. "I wasn’t looking at anything."
The moment he saw the message Leo Fane sent him, he didn’t even know what he was thinking—or rather, his mind was completely blank. He had subconsciously made the call.
Only now, as his reason returned, did he realize how inappropriate his action was.
He couldn’t very well tell Sophie Wexler that he wanted to see who she was with.
Besides, Leo Fane had sent people to protect her, and he didn’t want her to think Leo was having her monitored.
His answer only made Sophie more confused. ’???’
’This isn’t Cillian’s style, calling me for no reason.’
Seeing the look on her face, Cillian finally composed himself and said, "I was just reminding you that the matching banquet is soon. I was afraid you might forget."
Hearing this, Sophie Wexler burst out laughing. "Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten."
Even if she wanted to forget, she couldn’t. For the past few days, the Capital Planet’s network had been flooded with content about the matching banquet. She saw it the moment she went online.
"That’s good," Cillian replied. After a moment, he spoke again. "You went shopping today?"
Sophie figured he must have seen her background. She hummed in agreement and sat down in her aircraft. "I needed a musical instrument, so I came out to buy one."
"And I happened to stumble upon a guitar." As she spoke, Sophie even held up her guitar to show him.
Cillian: "It’s quite nice."
"When I have time later, I’ll play it for you. You can be the judge."
Cillian’s fingers paused. "Alright."
After that, Sophie didn’t say much else. Since she needed to head back, she ended the call.
Before hanging up, she made sure to tell Cillian that she wouldn’t forget the matching banquet, especially since he’d called specifically to remind her.
On her end, Sophie Wexler had already flown her aircraft back to her residence. Once there, she tried out her new guitar and the other instruments the mall had delivered, recorded a video for a new song, and packaged it all to send to Benjamin Wyatt.
The day passed in the blink of an eye.
Meanwhile, on the other side of things.
The several candidates who had been rejected by Sophie Wexler were all exhausted after a great deal of painstaking inquiry.
They hadn’t heard about the Healer-class accepting anyone’s invitation!
’Who the hell does she want?!’
Finally, one of them couldn’t take it anymore. He walked over and pushed open his father’s door. "Dad, who’s on the candidate list this time?"
Generally, the candidates didn’t know who the others were. But when it came to those on the Capital Planet qualified for matching, it was more or less the same group of people every time.
He wanted to know the specific names on the list—no, to be more precise, he wanted to know who that Healer-class had actually chosen.
Because in everyone’s mind, the option of a Healer-class not making a choice was simply impossible.
The elder looked up, his gaze profound. "What are you planning to do?"
"The Empire’s matching process strictly forbids the use of any and all extraordinary measures to..."
"Dad, where is your mind going? I just want to know if Miss Wexler has accepted another candidate’s invitation, so I can be mentally prepared."
’And to see if I can find another chance for myself.’
After all, his family had many High-Rank individuals who suffered greatly from the ravages of the Disorder Period, especially his older brother. But his brother could no longer be matched. He desperately hoped that Miss Wexler would consider him and match with him.
"You brat, you’d better not do anything out of line."
Evan Adler immediately promised, "I definitely won’t."
Afterward, the man tossed him a list. "This is the candidate list we received this morning."
"The ones marked here are the matching candidates the Marshal specifically shortlisted."
Evan Adler glanced at it. The list had at least a dozen names, but only four were marked, and the Adler Family was among them.
"Thanks, Dad." With that, he grabbed the list and immediately scurried off.
He had to admit, the names were almost exactly who he’d guessed. He was in contact with most of them.
Evan Adler glanced at the marked names his father mentioned and immediately sent a message.
"Did Miss Wexler choose you?"
The other person: "No. Did she choose you?"
"No."
The two of them: "..."
Evan Adler: "I have a list here."
The other person: "What a coincidence. I do too."
The two of them: "..."
He asked several more people in a row and got the same result.
The several candidates who had been specially marked on the list: "..."
To synchronize their information, Evan Adler took the initiative and pulled them all into a group chat.
"Are we sure Miss Wexler’s choice isn’t one of us?"
"Well, I’m not lying."
"Me neither."
"Me too."
Everyone’s attention instantly turned to the last person who hadn’t replied. ’Could it be?’
The last person: "I know who Miss Wexler has been in contact with."
"Who?!"
The group chat instantly flooded with question marks. "???"
Just as everyone was getting anxious, the person finally spoke up, dropping a bombshell: "It’s Shane Thorne."
The screen went quiet for several seconds before everyone came to their senses. "So it was him."
On second thought, it made sense. He was from a branch of the Royal Family, after all. His power and status were undeniable, but...
Looking at the people the Marshal had marked, they were clearly either supporters of the Little Prince’s faction or held a strictly neutral stance.
Not a single one belonged to any other branch.
Clearly, the other men had realized this as well.
Your Majesty’s health was failing, and the Little Prince was still young. If something were to happen to Your Majesty, all the major powers would make their move.
And Shane Thorne’s branch was a formidable rival.
If he were to match with such a high-Level Healer-class at a time like this, it would greatly increase their odds of success.
’No wonder.’
"No, we can’t just sit back and wait for defeat."
"Even if Miss Wexler rejected our invitations, that doesn’t mean we can’t show our sincerity."
And so, for the next two days, Sophie Wexler was notified every day that she had deliveries to accept.
There was a ceaseless stream of flowers, each with a handwritten card.
And all sorts of other gifts, which nearly filled the entire receiving area.
The problem was, she couldn’t see the senders to refuse them, and the delivery person told her she absolutely had to take them, or it would make his job difficult.
He said she could even throw them away after taking them.
Sophie Wexler: "..."
