This Bad Luck is Awesome!

Chapter 1: The Unluckier, The Luckier

Valentine’s Day, evening.

Modu University, outside the women’s dormitory.

"Liu Yue, my name is Zhang Da, and I like you!"

Chen Mo held a large bouquet of vibrant roses, loudly confessing to Xiaomei, who stood before him.

Chen Mo was a delivery driver. He had accepted an errand order to help a client confess his feelings.

In principle, he didn’t want to take the job, but the client sent him a 200-yuan red envelope. At that point, he had no choice but to go against his... no, he had no choice but to contribute a little something to the power of beautiful love.

"The first time I saw you, I was completely captivated by your charming big eyes, your cute curvy eyelashes, your perky nose, your beautiful little face, your long, straight legs..."

"Lately, I’ve been thinking about you every day. I think of you when I’m playing League of Legends, when I’m playing Valorant, and when I’m playing Honor of Kings. I think of you in class, when I’m eating, when I’m showering, when I’m watching... movies... I’m thinking of you every single moment."

"I feel like I can’t live without you. Liu Yue, I like you. Let’s be together!"

Chen Mo held the flowers in his left hand and his phone in his right, recording Liu Yue, while trying his best to recite the client’s confession script in a deeply affectionate tone.

Honestly, confessing in front of so many people outside the women’s dorm didn’t give him any social anxiety or make him nervous. After all, he wasn’t confessing for himself.

But reciting such bizarre and over-the-top lines made him blush.

Liu Yue, standing opposite him, also turned red.

Chen Mo was red from embarrassment; Liu Yue was red with rage.

After finishing the script, he shoved the bouquet of vibrant roses into the furious Liu Yue’s hands, hopped on his scooter, and bolted.

’Having a delivery guy confess for you? If that actually works, I’ll eat my hat.’

Chen Mo muttered to himself as he rode his scooter across campus, the cool evening wind blowing against his face. ’Some people are just insane.’

Once he was a good distance from the women’s dorm, he stopped his scooter and sent the confession video he had just recorded to the client.

"Boss, I’ve completed the confession as you requested. Please leave a five-star review."

Chen Mo skillfully placed his phone back on its mount and, without stopping, continued on to his next delivery.

...

About ten minutes later, Chen Mo, travel-worn, found himself back at the Modu University women’s dorm. This time, a girl had ordered a taro boba milk tea from "Modu Housewives’ Home."

While waiting for the girl to come downstairs to pick up her order, he opened his phone and checked WeChat. A group chat at the very top of his list, named [Modu’s Financial Elites], had over 999 new messages again.

He tapped into it and scrolled through the chat history. It was all the usual bragging and shooting the shit: who landed what project, who got promoted, who missed their KPIs and got fired, plus all sorts of finance industry gossip.

Looking at the group name, then down at the yellow uniform he was wearing, Chen Mo couldn’t help but laugh. It was a bitter, ironic smile.

He was 23 years old, a finance major who had graduated from a second-tier university in Modu.

Back then, Zhang Xuefeng wasn’t as famous, so he didn’t know the inside scoop on the finance industry. He just saw some stuff online and thought the financial world was glamorous and lucrative. So, when it was time to choose his major, he picked finance without a second thought and chose a university in Modu.

But after graduating, he learned that the real finance industry was even more brutal and unforgiving than Zhang Xuefeng had described.

With no family connections, no industry resources, and no degree from a top-tier university to his name, entering the finance industry meant becoming a beast of burden at the very bottom.

After graduation, he joined a small financial firm. But as a newcomer with nothing to his name, no clients trusted him, so naturally, he couldn’t meet his sales targets.

If he couldn’t meet his targets, his only option was to leave.

After bouncing between a few companies, he found himself stuck in the same cycle, unable to survive in the industry.

His college girlfriend broke up with him after he’d quit several jobs, saying she saw no future with him.

After quitting his job and breaking up with his girlfriend, he joined the yellow-clad army to make a living. He’d even take orders like confessing on someone’s behalf—as long as it paid. Making money is nothing to be ashamed of.

But his family didn’t know. They still thought he was working at a financial firm.

He never told them. He could take off his uniform when he was out, but he couldn’t shed the facade for his family.

Perhaps one day, when he finally figured things out, he would naturally leave this city.

"DING!"

Just then, a notification sound echoed in Chen Mo’s mind.

’It went off again.’

Chen Mo was no stranger to it; the sound had gone off a few times recently.

Previously, Chen Mo had heard a notification that said: [The More Unlucky, The More Lucky Constitution] has been activated.

At first, he thought his golden finger had arrived and he was about to reach the pinnacle of life, with luxury cars, mansions, and beautiful women all at his beck and call. The thought had thrilled him to no end.

But after calling out a few times with no response, he had disappointedly mocked himself. ’What pinnacle of life? It’s probably just a hallucination before a delivery driver works himself to death.’

But strangely, afterward, whenever that "DING!" sounded in his head, he would immediately have a stroke of bad luck.

For example, not long after he started delivering, there was a "DING!", and he was stopped by the traffic police for riding an electric scooter with a fake license plate, which was then impounded.

He’d be walking down the street, and "DING!", a flowerpot would fall from a building above, landing just a meter in front of him. If he had taken two more steps, he would’ve been toast.

Another time, while he was riding, Old Deng suddenly shot out in a wheelchair. "DING!" In swerving to avoid Old Deng, he accidentally crashed into a Mercedes parked on the side of the road.

Now it had rung again. ’Could it be that the notification wasn’t a hallucination? Do I really have a special constitution?’

’So what kind of bad luck is it this time?’

Chen Mo habitually touched his nose in thought. He quickly realized something, swiped his finger across the screen, and switched from the group chat to the delivery app’s back-end.

The moment he opened the back-end, Chen Mo’s brow furrowed. His grip on the phone tightened, and he started to see red.

He saw that a bad review and a complaint had appeared.

"Fuck!"

Chen Mo couldn’t help but swear. He didn’t even have to think to know who had left the bad review and complaint.

’That kid must have gotten rejected. Now he thinks it’s my fault and is taking it out on me with a bad review and a complaint to piss me off.’

But that’s just how this industry was. Even if you did nothing wrong, if you had the bad luck to run into an unreasonable client, they’d leave you a bad review just because they could. You could only chalk it up to bad luck.

"Is it really this uncanny? The moment it dings, something bad happens."

Chen Mo’s brow tightened, a look of doubt on his face. He was actually starting to believe he had this constitution; otherwise, how could something so bizarre be happening?

He took an order to confess for someone else, read the script they wrote word-for-word, and still managed to get a bad review and a complaint.

A bad review cost 50 yuan, and a complaint cost 200 yuan. That was 250 yuan gone, just like that.

Looking at the couples on campus, holding flowers and hands, ready to head to a hotel for some "end-to-end" service, Chen Mo’s mind went blank for a moment, his gaze turning distant.

On Valentine’s Day, other guys were inside, sweating in an air-conditioned room with their girlfriends in their arms. He, on the other hand, was single, outside, sweating bullets as he rushed to deliver orders in the sweltering heat. That was one thing.

But after a full day of running around, he gets hit with major bad luck—a bad review and a complaint—wiping out his earnings and making him a real idiot.

Even with the 200-yuan red envelope, he was still down 50 yuan. Still unlucky.

"Deliver my ass! I’m going home!"

Chen Mo decided to just give up. He wasn’t going to deliver another damn thing today. He’d deal with it tomorrow.

After the girl took her milk tea, he was about to get on his scooter and leave when he noticed several bouquets of flowers in the trash can next to him.

Among them was a large bouquet of roses, clearly the one from Zhang Da.

’Stuff from an idiot like that belongs in the trash!’

As for the other bouquets, he wasn’t surprised. Every year on the two Valentine’s Days, trash cans were always filled with flowers and umbrellas, symbolizing two extremes.

His ex-girlfriend had loved flower arranging. He had learned a bit from her when they were together and developed an interest in it himself. In the past, whenever he saw discarded flowers in the trash, he’d take them home to put in a vase.

These flowers in front of him were still quite nice. They just needed a little trimming.

He placed the bouquets on the footboard of his electric scooter and headed straight for home.

After getting home, the first thing he did was file an appeal in the app’s back-end. You can’t just get fined because a customer complains; everything should be based on reason and rules.

He had no idea if the appeal would be successful, but it was worth a shot.

He put down his phone, took a shower, made something to eat, and rested on the sofa for a bit.

Afterward, he washed a few vases and started trimming the bouquets with a pair of scissors.

He simply trimmed the bouquets, arranged them in the vases, and placed them on the table. They were quite pleasing to the eye. He hadn’t lost his touch.

"THUD."

However, as he was unwrapping the extra-large bouquet of roses from Zhang Da, a white, rectangular box with a phone printed on it fell out from the tightly bound flowers and landed on the floor.

"What’s this?"

Chen Mo froze for a second, then picked up the box to inspect it. When he saw the text on it, he was stunned.

[iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB White Titanium]

Seeing this, Chen Mo stroked his chin, a thoughtful look flashing in his eyes as he connected the dots with the recent events.

’Something isn’t right. Something is really not right.’
