This Bad Luck is Awesome!

Chapter 2: A Job is Only for Survival, but Getting Rich Requires a Golden Finger

There was a reason Chen Mo felt something was off.

As mentioned before, he seemed to have activated some sort of special constitution: the more unlucky he was, the luckier he got.

So far, we’ve only covered his misfortune, not the subsequent good luck.

Previously, his electric scooter had been impounded by the traffic police for various reasons.

So he wouldn’t fall behind on deliveries, he went to a nearby mall and spent 4,000 yuan on a new one, registration included.

As it turned out, the store was holding a raffle, and he won first prize: a top-of-the-line electric scooter worth 6,000 yuan.

He later resold it to another delivery rider for 5,500 yuan.

So, while getting nabbed by the cops was unlucky, he ended up with a brand-new, registered scooter and an extra 1,500 yuan for free. A massive win.

Then there was the time he was just walking down the street when a flowerpot suddenly fell from a building, scaring him half to death. When it shattered, he saw a blood-stained banknote inside with "110" written on it in what looked like blood.

After he reported it, the police officers told him there was a pyramid scheme operating in the building and that someone had been trying to signal for help.

Because he called the police, the organization was busted. The local precinct sent him a commemorative banner and a 500 yuan reward.

The family of the person who’d thrown the flowerpot also gave him a 5,000 yuan red envelope to thank him.

So while he’d been scared stiff and nearly took a flowerpot to the head, the outcome was great. He came out of it with a commemorative banner and 5,500 yuan.

Later, he was on the road when he had to swerve to avoid an Old Deng who darted out, crashing into a Mercedes parked on the side of the road. He was all set to call the car’s owner to negotiate compensation for the repairs.

But then he noticed that on this sweltering summer day, the car’s windows were all rolled up and the engine was off. Peeking inside, he saw a toddler of about two in the back seat, crying nonstop. The child looked to be in a terrible state, possibly suffering from heatstroke.

He immediately grabbed the tire pump from under his scooter’s seat, smashed the car window, opened the door, and got the child out before calling 120 for an ambulance.

Afterward, the car’s owners, a married couple, found him and knelt on the ground to thank him. They didn’t even mention the repairs; instead, they tried to give him 30,000 yuan as a token of their gratitude.

Chen Mo hadn’t intended to take any money for saving a life, but they insisted so strongly that after going back and forth for a while, he finally accepted 10,000 yuan.

All in all, his recent experiences perfectly matched the profile of his ’the-more-unlucky-the-luckier-you-get’ constitution.

First, he would run into a string of misfortunes, but they would always, through some bizarre twist of fate, turn into something good. Bad luck would become good fortune.

For instance, just a moment ago he’d been hit with a 250 yuan fine, one bad review, and one complaint, only for a brand-new iPhone to fall out of Zhang Da’s bouquet of flowers.

There was no longer any doubt. He definitely had a golden finger!

The moment he confirmed it, Chen Mo’s composure completely shattered. An indescribable expression crossed his face as his heart began to pound furiously.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!

At the same time, the Mi Band on his wrist started beeping an alert: Heart rate too high.

The alarm snapped him out of his euphoria. He ran to the bathroom, splashed his face with cold water, and tried to calm his racing heart.

Although he was sure he had a golden finger, he had no idea how to use it to his advantage. He would have to give it some serious thought.

"Damn, I’ve seen stories online about people finding new phones while dumpster diving on Valentine’s Day, but I never thought a meme would come to life right in front of me."

After calming down a bit, Chen Mo hefted the phone box in his hand. It wasn’t empty. He couldn’t help but laugh.

This phone wasn’t cheap, either. The top-of-the-line model sold for 13,999 yuan.

’Even after subtracting the 250 yuan I was fined for the bad review and complaint, I’m still up 13,749 yuan.’

’This phone is a little too extravagant for me, though. I should sell it.’

Chen Mo thought, ’I haven’t figured out how this golden finger works yet. I can’t get carried away. Better to save up some money first.’

He took pictures of the front and back of the phone box with his own phone, then opened WeChat to compose a post for his Friends Circle.

"Confessed to my crush and got rejected. Selling one brand-new, sealed [iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB in White Titanium]. DM me if you’re interested. Price is negotiable."

He finished writing the post, attached the two photos, blocked his family from seeing it, and published it in one smooth sequence.

Exhausted after a full day of deliveries, he lay in bed and watched some wilderness survival videos before falling asleep.

...

The next morning, Chen Mo woke up right on time, as if by an internal clock. He opened WeChat to find a red ’99+’ notification icon on his Friends Circle.

"Damn, Mo, giving away such an expensive phone? You must have met the one."

"Bro, just give it to me. We can run away to Chengdu together."

"You should sell it quick before it starts bringing back painful memories. I’ll do you a favor and take it off your hands for 50 yuan."

"I’ll give you 100."

...

Most of the likes and comments were from his old university classmates, some of whom also sent messages to comfort him.

He saw that several people had sent him private messages, all interested in buying the phone.

One offered 13,500, another offered 13,000—both were reasonable. But then someone offered 10,000. Chen Mo deleted that person on the spot.

He opened the chat with the person who offered 13,500. It was a university classmate. He typed, "13,500, you sure?"

"Yeah, Old Mo. Let’s meet up to do the deal," the other person replied instantly.

"OK."

Chen Mo agreed.

The two of them then set a time and place. After washing up and grabbing a bite to eat, Chen Mo headed out on his scooter.

On the way, he saw some police officers putting up wanted posters on a wall. Curious, he stopped his scooter to take a look.

"Class-A Wanted Notice... Reward... [Photo.jpg]... Physical Description... Bounty: 200,000 Yuan."

A 200,000 yuan bounty!

Chen Mo’s eyes widened slightly, his gaze fixed on the poster. ’This Class-A fugitive must have committed a serious crime.’

’But if the police can’t find him with their Skynet surveillance system, what chance does a regular person have? That 200,000 yuan will be hard to earn.’

Chen Mo arrived at the meeting spot. He and his classmate exchanged a few pleasantries before getting straight to business.

His classmate inspected the phone, transferred the money to Chen Mo, then opened the box and powered it on to check the device information.

"Looks good, no issues. Let’s grab a drink sometime when you’re free."

With the deal done, they both went their separate ways, as each had other things to attend to.

Chen Mo checked his bank account and did some quick mental math.

In his two months as a delivery driver, he had earned about 10,000 yuan after all the deductions for being slow when he was just starting out.

However, thanks to his ’the-more-unlucky-the-luckier-you-get’ constitution, he had made an additional 30,500 yuan on the side, plus a new electric scooter.

’A regular job is just for survival. To get rich, you need a golden finger.’

Chen Mo had come to understand a fundamental truth.

...

「A few days passed in a flash.」

Chen Mo spent the time trying to figure out how to intentionally activate his golden finger.

Finally, one evening, as Chen Mo was out on his usual delivery run, the sound he had been waiting for echoed in his mind.

He was in an old part of the city, a maze of narrow streets and alleyways with poor lighting and complex road conditions. He wasn’t going fast, but he wasn’t going slow, either.

DING!

He heard the sound just as he was riding up to a small, four-way alley intersection. At that exact moment, a man walked out of one of the alleys. He was wearing a baseball cap pulled down low and a face mask.

Both Chen Mo and the man froze for a second. Before either could react, they collided and went down in a heap.

His electric scooter toppled over, and the food delivery he was carrying spilled across the ground.

’Now I’ll get hit with a late fee and a bad review, plus I’ll have to pay to reorder the customer’s meal out of my own pocket.’

’The worst part is, the man I hit doesn’t look young. What if he’s seriously hurt?’

’If I really hurt him, I’m going to be bankrupted.’

Looking at the mess before him, Chen Mo’s face filled with worry. He couldn’t help but sigh internally. ’The significance of that DING! just keeps growing. Every time it sounds, something bad is guaranteed to happen.’

’But what’s the lucky twist going to be this time?’
