Chapter 5: With a Cheat, Who’d Still Slave Away?
"How could this be fake? Look at the announcement yourself."
The station master sent him a screenshot of a post the head office had just published on their official Weibo account.
"One of our company’s deliverymen acted heroically, disregarding his personal safety to step forward and assist the police in capturing a criminal. This not only showcases his individual bravery but also excellently reflects our corporate culture, which is dedicated, from top to bottom, to fostering a team with positive energy. Our company..."
"In light of this, our company has decided to grant the aforementioned deliveryman a 30,000 yuan cash reward as encouragement."
Chen Mo mentally skipped past the self-congratulatory fluff where the company used his accomplishment to pat itself on the back. His eyes focused on the last sentence.
The station master wasn’t bluffing. The head office really had awarded him 30,000 yuan.
’Still, screenshots can be photoshopped.’ He opened Weibo and found the company’s official account to see for himself.
As soon as he opened it, he saw the pinned post. It was identical to the station master’s screenshot. There really was a 30,000 yuan bonus.
"Damn, this guy just scored a 20+3."
"230,000! You’d have to work for two years straight at 10,000 a month to make that. I’m so jealous."
"A certain delivery company finally did something decent for once."
"Not *that* decent. Half the post is just them using someone else’s achievement to sing their own praises."
...
’Let them piggyback on my fame. As long as they pay up, I don’t care.’
Chen Mo glanced at the comments and chuckled, unconcerned.
The company was using the publicity from his deed as an advertisement, and he was getting 30,000 yuan out of it. It was a win-win. Nothing wrong with that.
Even if they hadn’t given him the money, there was nothing he could have done about them using the incident to burnish their own image.
He just hadn’t expected that this stroke of luck, born from misfortune, would have a follow-up.
"Chen Mo, come over to the station in a bit," the station master sent in a WeChat message.
"Okay," Chen Mo replied.
He wasn’t surprised. Of course, there’d be a ceremony for the award, and they’d need the man of the hour to be there.
After all, the company was definitely going to milk this 30,000-yuan bonus for another round of publicity.
Besides, he had some business to take care of at the station anyway.
BEEP BEEP!
Just then, Chen Mo’s phone buzzed with a new message.
"Your debit card account ending in 1234 received an inter-bank wire transfer of 200,000.00 RMB on August 14. Your new balance is 243,264.36. [Bank of China]"
’Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands.’
A full 200,000!
Chen Mo narrowed his eyes, carefully counting the digits in the text message several times before he could finally relax.
He knew the 200,000 was pretty much guaranteed, but the weight on his chest didn’t lift until the very second the money actually hit his account.
Before he joined the army of yellow-clad delivery drivers, he couldn’t even scrape together 10,000 yuan in his bank account.
Now, with the 30,000 from the company and the 3,000 from the station, his total balance would be around 276,000 yuan. That was getting close to 300,000.
’Things are looking up.’
Chen Mo’s eyes filled with satisfaction.
He sent a message to Xiaofeng to let him know the money had come through.
After finishing lunch at home, he hopped on his trusty electric scooter—which he hadn’t ridden in a few days—and headed to the familiar station.
"Xiaochen, congrats!"
"Making big moves in silence, eh? No wonder we haven’t seen you around the last few days."
"Chen Mo, sweetie, I always knew you had a bright future. Let me treat you to dinner later, we can have a few drinks..."
"Trying to fleece another sucker to save up for your two sons’ betrothal gifts?"
"..."
As soon as Chen Mo arrived, his colleagues at the station swarmed him with congratulations and jokes.
They had all heard from the station master that Chen Mo was the deliveryman who had taken down the A-level fugitive, and they were all green with envy.
Chen Mo smiled and greeted everyone before heading straight for the station master.
"So, what are your plans now?"
The station master lit a cigarette, his eyes narrowing in enjoyment as he looked at Chen Mo.
"I’m quitting."
Chen Mo gave a small, frank smile and shook his head.
"Yeah, who would do this job if they had other options?" The station master said with a sigh, holding the cigarette between his fingers and exhaling a cloud of smoke.
That’s just how this industry was. The turnover was high, with people constantly coming and going.
The moment a better opportunity came along, almost everyone left.
The two of them chatted for a bit before the people from the head office arrived.
After a simple award ceremony, Chen Mo received a certificate of recognition and the 33,000 yuan bonus from the company and the station.
The company, in turn, got the promotional footage they wanted. It was a happy outcome for everyone involved.
"Chen Mo, I see from your file that you have a bachelor’s degree in finance and have work experience at several financial institutions."
A sharp-looking executive from the company adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and smiled at Chen Mo. "Are you interested in working in the finance department at our head office?"
Chen Mo was taken aback, his face a mask of surprise. He never expected to be personally invited to join their finance department.
Before, he would have accepted in a heartbeat without a second of hesitation.
But now that his special constitution was active, why would he be a corporate drone when he had a cheat ability?
"Thank you for the offer. It’s just a bit sudden. I’d like to think about it."
But Chen Mo didn’t refuse outright, simply smiling and expressing his gratitude.
After the people from the head office left, the station master saw Chen Mo’s lingering surprise and couldn’t help but chuckle.
"It’s just one extra salary to them. With the amount of free advertising you just got them, they could pay your salary until you retire and still come out ahead."
The station master ran a hand through his already thinning hair, his expression inscrutable.
"I see."
Realization dawned on Chen Mo’s face. To the finance department, adding him was just the cost of one more salary.
By hiring him, they could continue to use him for promotional material, reaping benefits that would far outweigh the cost of his salary.
...
Afterward, Chen Mo left his uniform and other work items at the station, and the station master helped him cash out his earnings from the platform.
This also included settling the matter of the bad review and complaint he received for delivering a love confession for a customer. Someone had filmed a video and posted it on TikTok at the time. Coupled with the chat logs Chen Mo provided, it proved he had followed the customer’s instructions to the letter, leaving no grounds for criticism.
His appeal was successful, and the 250 yuan that had been deducted was returned to him.
In the end, all that was left was the electric scooter that had been his steadfast companion through wind and rain.
He gently stroked the scooter’s seat as if it were a beloved steed, his eyes filled with memories.
Unfortunately, he was leaving this line of work. And after two months of constantly racing against the clock, he had no desire to ride an electric scooter again.
If he kept it, it would just sit downstairs collecting dust, which felt like a waste.
An electric scooter was meant to be out braving the elements. Chen Mo felt he couldn’t hold it back from its destiny, so he decided to sell it.
"Who wants a like-new electric scooter? This is the very scooter that knocked the A-level fugitive to the ground and pinned him there, leading to his capture! An absolute war hero!"
"See this scraped paint? These aren’t scratches; they’re battle scars, marks of honor!"
"A fine steed has a spirit of its own. My scooter is practically a steed—a trusty electric one! Maybe its heroic spirit will lead you to the next A-level fugitive."
"I bought it for 4,000 yuan and have only ridden it for less than two months. I’m letting it go for a steal at 3,500. Who wants it?"
