This Bad Luck is Awesome!

Chapter 6: New Play, A Double Ding

Everyone had been minding their own business, but they all grew interested when they heard Chen Mo’s shout.

"He’s got a point, you know."

"Can you even compare a new-energy donkey to a traditional one?"

"This isn’t just any old e-donkey. It’s the e-donkey from Wang Wei’s poems... wait, no, the one from the official blue-and-white announcement."

"This scooter’s hit an A-series. Riding it down a dark alley for a late-night delivery will ward off evil spirits."

"..."

Everyone laughed and chatted about it. Some were just joining in on the fun and memes, while others thought it might be worth taking a chance.

After all, with some things, it’s better to believe they exist than to believe they don’t.

"I’ll take it!"

Someone quickly made a deal with Chen Mo.

E-scooter: -1. Balance: +3500.

After taking care of business, Chen Mo hailed a cab home.

"DING!"

The moment he walked through the door, a notification sound rang in his mind.

It meant something unlucky was about to happen again.

Chen Mo felt a faint sense of curiosity and anticipation. He was anticipating what good fortune would follow the bad luck.

He was also curious about what new misfortune was about to befall him.

’Hope it’s not too bizarre.’

He walked into his apartment. Everything seemed normal.

Chen Mo glanced around and saw nothing out of the ordinary, so he went to the bathroom.

"DRIP... DRIP..."

As soon as he entered the bathroom and turned on the light, he noticed water dripping from the suspended ceiling panels above.

Water was seeping through the cracks between nearly every panel.

"The upstairs apartment is leaking."

Chen Mo identified the source of the problem at a glance. The waterproofing in the upstairs bathroom had failed.

’Is this the bad luck this time?’

’So where’s the good luck that’s supposed to follow?’

’Could it be?’

Chen Mo thought for a moment, and his eyes suddenly lit up as an idea struck him.

Could it be like those news stories online, where gold bars or cash were hidden in the ceiling space of a bathroom?

He had seen such things before, both online and in TV shows.

At this thought, he immediately dragged a chair into the bathroom, stood on it, and carefully removed two of the ceiling panels.

Then he stuck his head into the opening, turned on his phone’s flashlight, and searched the area thoroughly.

But the result was disappointing.

There was nothing!

Only the incessant dripping of water from upstairs, pattering onto the remaining panels.

’Looks like the problem really is upstairs.’

Chen Mo thought for a moment and decided to go upstairs to check on the situation.

The building he rented in was an old, six-story walk-up.

The facilities were quite dated, but its advantages were a decent location and cheap rent.

He walked up the stairs to the door of the apartment above his.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!

Chen Mo knocked on the door.

"Who is it? What do you want?"

A voice with a heavy accent and non-standard Mandarin quickly replied from inside.

It sounded like a foreigner speaking Chinese.

Chen Mo was slightly taken aback. He hadn’t expected a foreigner to be living upstairs.

But Modu was a cosmopolitan metropolis; foreigners were a common sight.

"The waterproofing in your bathroom has failed. Water’s leaking into my apartment. You need to get someone to fix it."

Chen Mo explained the problem simply, afraid the other person wouldn’t understand if he made it too complicated.

"Okay, I’m sorry. I will find someone to handle it."

The foreigner inside apologized. His attitude was decent enough.

Since the person had said as much, Chen Mo had nothing more to add and went straight back home.

’So rude. Didn’t even open the door.’

Chen Mo couldn’t help but grumble to himself on his way downstairs.

He’d been hoping to go inside and see the situation for himself, but the guy didn’t even open the door.

Back in his apartment, he saw that no good fortune had appeared. He figured the luck from this incident might not come so quickly.

’Or maybe... the leak was just the prelude? Is the bad luck not over yet?’

"DING!"

The very instant he suspected the bad luck wasn’t over, the notification sound rang in his mind again.

"?"

Chen Mo froze on his sofa, his eyes filled with confusion. ’What is this, some new kind of play?’

This really threw him for a loop. Why was one unlucky thing happening right after another?

’The last one isn’t even over, and now there’s another?’

’What is it this time?’

DING-DONG~

Just then, his phone chimed. He picked it up and saw that someone had tagged @everyone in the "Modu Financial Elites" group chat.

He tapped on it, and a news article filled the screen.

Seeing the headline, Chen Mo’s eyes widened slightly, his face a mask of shock and surprise.

[Guanlan Automobile (VistaLuxe) Releases Q2 Financial Report, Report Shows...]

[Automotive Industry Insiders Widely Believe Guanlan Automobile’s Sluggish Sales, Consecutive Quarterly Losses, Capital Shortages, and Lack of Competitive Technology Point to a Bleak Market Outlook, with a Preliminary Judgment that its New Energy Strategic Transition Has Failed]

The reason this news shocked and surprised Chen Mo so much was that he owned stock in this very company!

Previously, the automaker had grandly announced a complete transition to new energy, ceasing production of purely gasoline-powered cars and preparing to invest huge sums in R&D for new energy technologies.

Thanks to the new-energy craze and government policy direction, many industry insiders felt this stock had potential. It had been discussed in the group chat, and many members, including Chen Mo, had bought some.

He didn’t have much money, though, so he only bought one lot—worth about three thousand yuan.

But the new energy vehicle market was turbulent and changed rapidly; the competition was cutthroat.

Technology evolved at lightning speed, with new iterations coming out on monthly or even weekly cycles.

If you fell behind even slightly, it was incredibly difficult to catch up.

That was what happened to Guanlan. It had fallen behind without anyone noticing, and its stock price had been slowly declining ever since.

Chen Mo hadn’t bought much, and selling would have meant a guaranteed loss, so he just left it there, hoping it might one day recover.

’With this financial report out, the stock price is probably going to hit its limit down.’

Chen Mo opened his stock trading app and looked at his Guanlan Automobile shares. Sure enough, there it was: a glaring green -10%.

Including today’s drop, he was now down almost 30% on this stock.

’Could that "DING" from just now have been because of this stock?’

Chen Mo stroked his chin, a thoughtful look flashing in his eyes.

The "DING" had just sounded when his phone chimed. Then he saw the news and that glaring green -10%.

Clearly, the unlucky event had already occurred.

The important question was, how would the subsequent good luck manifest?

’Could it be that this stock is about to have a major turnaround?’

Chen Mo’s eyes lit up as he suddenly thought of a possibility.

If it were anyone else—even an industry insider—telling him this stock was about to turn around, he would have walked away without a second thought and called them a fucking idiot.

But he was a man with a golden finger. His constitution defied logic, almost like that of a conceptual god.

As long as the "unlucky" process was initiated, no matter what happened, he was guaranteed to get a good outcome from the related events in the end.

As for what happened in between, no one could predict.

This time, the unlucky event was related to the Guanlan Automobile stock, so the subsequent reversal would also happen with this stock.

’If I buy into this stock right now, won’t I make a huge profit when it turns around?’

Chen Mo’s eyes grew brighter and brighter. It seemed he was gradually figuring out how to use his unique constitution to maximize his gains.
