Chapter 18: Store Manager: It Doesn’t Look Quite Real
If anyone else knew they were about to have a run of bad luck, they would absolutely moan and groan.
But when Chen Mo discovered he was about to have some bad luck, his eyes lit up, and he was filled with anticipation.
For others, bad luck was just bad luck.
But for him, bad luck meant someone else was about to have a very bad day.
Cue the applause.
After hearing the DING of the notification, he couldn’t help but wonder, ’Where will the reversal come from this time?’
’The bag itself?’
’A fake?’
He’d seen news reports about people buying fakes from official boutiques before. It wasn’t impossible.
The handbag fell to the floor, and the THUD drew everyone’s attention in the quiet store.
Xia Shiqing’s eyes were already on Chen Mo, so she saw the bag fall to the floor.
She wasn’t too worried, though. A handbag wasn’t so fragile that it would break from a single drop.
But after hearing the noise, a sales associate immediately headed their way.
The sales associate saw the handbag on the floor and knew what had happened without needing to ask.
Plenty of customers had accidentally dropped bags while looking at them before.
"Sir, we need to inspect the bag."
The sales associate spoke to Chen Mo politely.
"Okay."
Of course, Chen Mo had no objections. It was his mistake, after all.
If he had caused any damage, he would pay for it. He wasn’t an unreasonable person.
The sales associate gently picked up the bag from the floor and began to inspect it carefully.
After looking it over carefully, she found a small scuff on the bag’s metal hardware.
You could see it if you looked closely.
"Sir, there’s a scuff mark here. The bag has been slightly damaged."
The sales associate showed Chen Mo the metal hardware on the bag’s front logo, which indeed had a small scuff mark.
Xia Shiqing, who was standing nearby, glanced over, a hint of surprise in her eyes.
’It got scuffed from a single drop? Talk about bad luck.’
"Sir, according to our store’s policy, if a product is damaged due to a customer’s own actions, they are required to purchase the item at its full original price."
The sales associate explained the store’s policy to Chen Mo, her tone still polite.
They’d had customers accidentally drop and damage bags before.
They always followed this policy.
Most customers were quite reasonable and would usually accept.
But some customers didn’t care, and things would get ugly, with both sides arguing until the police were called.
"No problem. I accept responsibility."
Chen Mo nodded. He had no objections.
Even without the DING ringing in his mind, he would have paid for the damage he caused.
It was only a tiny mark, but this was a luxury item. Who would want to spend tens of thousands on a damaged product?
Besides, now that the DING had sounded in his head, he knew a reversal was coming, which gave him even less reason to object.
"This model is our black and gold calfskin CF, medium size. It’s valued at 84,000 yuan."
The sales associate briefly informed Chen Mo of the bag’s model and price.
Upon hearing this, Chen Mo couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, his eyes wide with surprise.
A 4090 graphics card, a product of humanity’s top engineering minds, only cost a little over 10,000.
’And this thing, stitched together from a few pieces of leather, sells for 84,000?’
’No wonder they call them luxury goods. The price is certainly extravagant.’
"Fine. Ring it up."
Despite his surprise, Chen Mo’s face remained impassive as he calmly took out his phone to pay.
’He figured the problem was with the bag itself, so he had to buy it first.’
’With a bill and a receipt, he could maximize his gains when the tables turned.’
"I’ll get it. It’s not like you have any use for this bag."
Just then, Xia Shiqing stopped Chen Mo, offering to pay for it herself.
This had nothing to do with Chen Mo in the first place; he was only here with her to look at bags and was just helping her hold it.
So, she should naturally be the one to pay for the damages.
Besides, what would a single guy like Chen Mo do with this bag? Take it home and let it collect dust?
If she bought it, at least she could use it.
Although it was scuffed, that just made it hard to sell. It would have almost no impact on her own use.
"Nope, can’t let you do that. I have to be the one to buy it."
Chen Mo grew anxious, shaking his head and refusing with an unshakeable tone.
’Xia Shiqing was trying to take the hit for him? Not on his watch.’
’If he paid, it would count as his misfortune, and the reversal would follow.’
’But if Xia Shiqing took the fall, it wouldn’t count as his misfortune, and wouldn’t his good luck fly right out the window?’
’Exploiting the system like that was absolutely not allowed.’
To prevent Xia Shiqing from paying, he went straight to the counter and had the sales associate ring him up.
Besides, Xia Shiqing’s phone was in her purse, and her purse was slung over his own shoulder, so she couldn’t get to her phone anyway.
Seeing this, a peculiar glint flashed through Xia Shiqing’s captivating eyes.
She didn’t know Chen Mo was worried about her "exploiting the system"; she thought he was simply stepping up to take the blame for her.
To be honest, she was a little touched.
"By the way, what happens if I buy a fake from your boutique?"
While checking out, Chen Mo seemed to recall something and asked the cashier earnestly.
"Sir, you’re overthinking things. How could our boutique possibly have fakes?"
The cashier paused for a moment, then said confidently, "Don’t worry, sir. If you were to buy a fake from our boutique, we would give you a full refund and compensate you three times the purchase price, in accordance with consumer protection laws."
The cashier had a resolute look in her eyes, but inside, Chen Mo was already laughing.
On the outside, however, Chen Mo just nodded calmly.
Soon, the cashier rang him up, he paid the bill, and he received his receipt.
Normally, that would have been the end of it.
But Chen Mo knew the real show was just beginning.
Now, it was time to witness the reversal.
"I’ve paid, so this bag belongs to me now."
"But I’m a cautious person. After spending this much on a bag, I’d like to have it authenticated for my own peace of mind."
Chen Mo held up the receipt, the corner of his mouth twitching into a slight smile. "To prevent any accusations of me swapping the bag, would it be alright if I had an appraiser come to your store to authenticate it? We can leave the bag right here. I won’t touch it."
’It was simple. An appraisal would reveal whether there was a problem with the bag or not.’
He was quite confident. His ability had never let him down before.
Hearing Chen Mo’s words, both Xia Shiqing and the sales associate were taken aback.
’Chen Mo suspected there was a problem with the bag?’
’But what did Chen Mo know about handbags?’
’Modern fakes were so well-made they could pass for the real thing; she doubted even she could spot one.’
’So how could Chen Mo?’
Xia Shiqing shot Chen Mo a look, her eyes filled with doubt.
But she kept quiet. Chen Mo must have his reasons for doing this.
The sales associate was even more stunned. ’Was Chen Mo suggesting their boutique sold fakes?’
’How was that possible?’
She wanted to object, but on second thought, he was only raising his suspicion after he had already paid in full. There was nothing wrong with that.
He had paid without complaint. It was perfectly normal to want an appraisal just to verify a product’s authenticity.
Plenty of customers had their bags appraised after taking them home.
In fact, Chen Mo’s suggestion to leave the bag here and have an appraiser come to them was even more trustworthy, as it eliminated any possibility of him swapping the bag.
It was just that nothing like this had ever happened in the store before.
Besides, having a third-party appraiser come to the store would reflect poorly on their brand image.
If other customers were to walk in and see a third-party appraisal in progress, it would look rather bad.
"I’ll have to ask my store manager."
The sales associate didn’t know what to do, so she decided to call for backup.
"Go ahead."
Chen Mo smiled and nodded.
Soon, the sales associate returned with the store manager.
The manager was a woman in her forties. She, too, was a bit surprised after the sales associate explained Chen Mo’s request.
"Sir, I actually know a little about authentication myself. How about I take a look for you first?"
"If you feel I’m not objective, I can accompany you to a third-party appraiser. But I’m afraid having an appraiser come to our store is not possible."
After a moment of thought, the manager offered her solution.
They could take it to be appraised, and she would accompany them the entire time, but an in-store appraisal was out of the question.
"Alright, you can take a look first then."
Chen Mo shrugged; he had no issue with that plan.
"Of course. Please have a seat and rest for a moment. Xiaozhao, bring two cups of tea for our guests."
The manager put on her glasses, picked up the bag, and began to examine it carefully.
At first, she thought, ’How could there possibly be a fake in our boutique?’ and planned to just give it a quick, casual look.
’Even if he took it to a third-party appraiser, she wasn’t worried.’
But the longer she looked, the more she felt that something wasn’t quite right.
Gradually, the color began to drain from her face.
She adjusted her glasses, as if wondering if her eyes were playing tricks on her.
She couldn’t be certain if it was a fake yet.
But... it didn’t quite look real...
