Chapter 158: The Shade Clan
Akasha, Luna, and Yume descended through the upper atmosphere of Noxara together.
Below them, the sky was filled with descending figures—thousands of Unbound Gods and Constellation-ranked warriors pouring downward in disciplined waves, their auras cutting clean lines through the reddish-yellow light of the four suns.
Another several thousand remained behind, already spreading through the layered fortresses of the Dark Thorn stronghold with silent, methodical purpose.
The metallic wind of the upper air brushed past the three of them as the continents of the drained world slowly came into clearer view.
From this height, the land looked scarred and muted.
Vast stretches of cracked red earth and sparse copper-leafed forests spread across the Topside.
Prison formations still glowed faintly across wide regions, and the residual pressure of long-term draining hung in the air like a low.
Akasha barely spared a thought for the widespread destruction or the overall situation.
He knew his legion would handle the task of cleansing the world with ease, their combined power making the process swift and uncomplicated.
His mind was fixed firmly on other matters entirely.
"It’s not much now... but this world will become the epicenter of knowledge for the Pantheon I intend to build," he said, voice calm against the rush of descending air.
"But everything begins with my second disciple. Or at least... that is how I want it to begin."
It went without saying that, after knowing how important Pantheons were in the grand scheme of things, Dreamer’s Peak wouldn’t be a mere sect or faction.
No, this would be the cornerstone of everything that lay ahead.
So, even while working to secure the Orin Star System, he made sure to carve out time to lay the groundwork for his Pantheon.
As the three of them leveled off high above the continents, the wind whipped through his purple-and-white hair, teasing the two streams of pink-and-purple and blue-streaked locks that flowed beside him.
"And according to Lane’s memories... It seems like the races here are nearly identical to those on Kalpa."
From what he gleaned through Luna’s thoughts, he understood that this world was home to Dragons, Humans, Dwarves, and even a few Angel clans inhabiting the Topside.
On the Underside, the pattern persisted—Vampires, Shadow Demons, and scattered Ghoul clans roamed the land. The parallels between the two realms seemed almost unnervingly precise.
Yume’s softer voice held a trace of genuine curiosity as her gaze lingered on the far-off horizon.
"Is the mix of races determined by the Star System as a whole... or by the nature of each world?"
However, in this moment, none of them had an answer.
As the question hung in the air for a moment before Luna shifted the conversation back to the matter at hand, her tone lighter yet still edged with practical interest.
"Well... it seems like luck is on our side in one respect. It seems like the Dark Thorn never managed to imprison every being on this world, nor did they fully claim all of it.
A single clan has held them off since the day they arrived—the Shade Clan."
Saying they had merely held off the Dark Thorn was an understatement... yet, despite the chaos, there was still one person who remained free—at least by the standards of everyone else in Noxara.
Akasha’s smile was faint but purposeful as he shifted their course toward a far-off expanse of land still caught in dispute.
"Then let us go pay my future second disciple a visit... and maybe lend her a hand while we’re at it."
----
The Shade Clan were Shadow Demons, but they defied every expectation their name might conjure.
They didn’t lurk in darkness for the sake of fear or prey on the weak.
Instead, they acted as guardians of knowledge—especially the kind most factions would rather see lost to time or destroyed outright.
The secrets they kept were the ones considered too dangerous, too disruptive, or too forbidden for the world to handle.
Over the course of five full eras since the Dark Elves first invaded Noxara and successfully locked the world into imprisonment, the Shade Clan had managed to carve out a secret realm that remained undiscovered for a remarkably long time.
The reason for that longevity lay in the very knowledge they guarded.
Formations of extraordinary complexity...
Layered arrays that could hide entire regions from even high-level senses... and countless other techniques of concealment and preservation had earned them a quiet title among those who still remembered the old days.
The Dark Guardians of Knowledge.
Yet the same foundation that made the clan formidable had also led it into slow decline.
It was well known by now... Stars, by their nature, held no inherent connection to bloodlines or parentage.
Alignment sometimes occurred, but it was never guaranteed.
A Star answered only to the destiny of the individual who bore it.
Long before they were founded, the Shade Clan’s oldest ancestor bore a Star devoted entirely to knowledge and the relentless quest for it.
Over the generations, the clan came to uphold that same destiny with unwavering determination.
Through a quiet and deliberate process of selective culling, any child born without a knowledge-type Star was simply killed.
What was left behind was no longer a diverse and vibrant community, but rather a small, meticulously curated group of individuals whose lives centered entirely on seeking, guarding, and mastering forbidden knowledge.
Yet, all of that is simply what they were once known as.
----
Currently, deep within the hidden heart of the secret realm, Calista Shade stood alone in a vast library-like chamber.
Towering shelves of dark stone and shadow stretched upward until they disappeared into gloom, each one lined with tomes, records, and sealed scrolls that pulsed with quiet, dangerous light.
Above her, a wide projection hovered in the air, displaying the outside world with perfect clarity.
Millions of Dark Elves stood in disciplined silence across the surrounding land—no longer throwing themselves against the outer formations, no longer testing the barriers with waves of coordinated assault.
They just waited, watching, like predators certain the prey would eventually wander out on its own.
However, Calista was far from a panicking child.
At two hundred and fifty years old, she carried the full weight of her lineage in every measured movement.
Pale skin almost luminous against the dark surroundings, long black hair falling straight down her back, and black eyes that reflected the floating projection with calm, distant focus.
And, since the moment of her birth, the fate of the Shade Clan had rested on her shoulders.
Ironically or not, with the fate of Noxara hanging in the balance and the traditions her clan upheld, her path was already decided.
As the last-born member of the Shade, she was destined to become its knowledge bearer.
Now, she stood as the last guardian of every fragment of forbidden knowledge remaining in Noxara.
Even now, with millions gathered outside—as they had for the past century—her calm never faltered.
Yet, there was a faraway look in her eyes, a quiet detachment that revealed just how deeply the weight of that responsibility had shaped her over the years.
She turned a page in the heavy tome open before her, the soft rustle of ancient paper the only sound inside the chamber besides her own quiet breathing.
"After five eras of constant pressure... they simply stop?" she murmured, voice low and edged with restrained frustration.
"Not even a single probing attack.... They’ve only stood there and watched for the past century."
Her black eyes narrowed slightly at the motionless sea of Dark Elves displayed above her.
"What exactly are they waiting for?"
The question hung in the still air of the library.
At the same time, the projection continued to show the same unchanging scene—millions of silent figures waiting with predatory patience beyond the walls of the last secret realm of the Shade Clan.
